My favorite belt array! I explain step-by-step how to create this array that will last you into end-game, upgradable to recycle lower-tier belts as you replace them.

Factorio is a game in which you build and maintain factories. You will be mining resources, researching technologies, building infrastructure, automating production and fighting enemies. In the beginning you will find yourself chopping trees, mining ores and crafting mechanical arms and transport belts by hand, but in short time you can become an industrial powerhouse, with huge solar fields, oil refining and cracking, manufacture and deployment of construction and logistic robots, all for your resource needs. However this heavy exploitation of the planet's resources does not sit nicely with the locals, so you will have to be prepared to defend yourself and your machine empire.
Join forces with other players in cooperative Multiplayer, create huge factories, collaborate and delegate tasks between you and your friends. Add mods to increase your enjoyment, from small tweak and helper mods to complete game overhauls, Factorio's ground-up Modding support has allowed content creators from around the world to design interesting and innovative features. While the core gameplay is in the form of the freeplay scenario, there are a range of interesting challenges in the form of the Scenario pack, available as free DLC. If you don't find any maps or scenarios you enjoy, you can create your own with the in-game Map Editor, place down entities, enemies, and terrain in any way you like, and even add your own custom script to make for interesting gameplay.

I really, deeply appreciate your posting of this design, the inserter array design, and the main bus suggestions for what to transport. You've helped me reorganize my thoughts and come to the realization that effective expansion is impossible without automating the production of your belts, underground belts, splitters, and inserters. I also enjoy your Let's Plays and Steam guide on effective tips and tricks. You are definitely my go-to source for Factorio inspiration.

In over 500 hours of playing Factorio, I've never used the circuit network. Usually don't even research it. Thanks to your easy to understand explanation, I just realized I can use the same "limits" principle to deal with light and heavy oil issues. I tested it out by attaching a pump to an oil storage tank, then attached a steam engine to the other side. Ran the red wire from the pump to the oil storage tank and set the condition of "light oil > 2,400". Sure enough, when the tank was just about full, the valve opened and the steam engine ate up the excess oil. No more petroleum production stalling! So thanks! :)
@KatherineOfSky
@KatherineOfSky 7 лет назад
Woohoo! Circuits do indeed make life a lot easier -- so glad you are discovering them! I also wire up my lubricant plants & heavy oil crackers to make sure that the lube tanks are full before cracking into light oil -- it's a good way to make sure you have enough for blue belt production.

Incredibly detailed tutorial, thank you for this. I am a newby myself and don't really understand what the hell is going on in other tutorials I watch as the creator usually just assumes I know everything already. They build a large construction like yours, all the robots come flying in and build it, no word on how that happened whatsoever. You, on the other hand, explain all the small details, even if they only ever so slightly have something to do with the setup you are presenting. Keep up with this stuff! I bought this game day 1 when it came out on steam and was always starting a new world and then quitting again because I did not understand even the easiest assembly lines, now I might pull through and this is largely due to these tutorials. Cheers!

Great video and explanations. I really appreciated that you expanded onto something already existing. A lot of videos I see are just a completely open and empty area that doesn't show how to efficiently connect to your already existing bases and belts. Seeing your previous build with this expansion has given me wonderful ideas to use. Like the splitter from the main bus that placed green circuits to one side of the belt. I had no idea to force a sideways belt with a belt above would stop the connection of belts ensuring it only is placed on one side. I didn't even come to learn that, but from the video you casually dropped that nugget of wisdom in along with the other great info. Awesome tutorial. Glad I found you.

A very good guide. We can plainly see, you know what you are doing and have a coherent plan for the whole setup. One thing I would recommend, would be doing a bit of scripting or at least pre-planning. Every few moments you stumble or fumble or forget something. This is of course fine for a playthrough, but in a quick, clear guide it is a little bit confusing, especially if someone is not very familiar with the topic.

Hello. This is the second video I watched from this channel. I always make a looping belt for all the containers then split the materials to fill both sides of the looping belt because I feel safer when all of the containers get more equal materials.

Looping is not an efficient strategy in Factorio: it just wastes materials and time.

If you hoook up all the chests & (output-)inserters together and connect it to a constant combinator, you can control the amount of (underground-)belts & splitter from a single location. In the Combinator, you'll have to input a negative number (eg -50 yellow belt) and the inserters have to work, while the item is less than zero

1000h into Factorio - Both this belt array as well as your oil setup are still my preferred solutions. :D Thanks for the tips! :)

I really love the idea with the requester chest. Will do that, since I tend to have about 8k yellow belts lingering in my storage system at some point in the game.

I'm totally with you -- I hate having extra stuff in storage that's not being recycled!

Nice tutorial ! If I would have taken the time to think about a belt array system, I would probably find something similar. But you saved me some neurons. Thanks ! I'm french but I had no difficulties to understand (and sry for language mistakes).

Fast inserter that pulling yellow belts from the factory has an underground belt property, that is why he pulls everything instead of 350 :) Other than that its a gr8 tutorial.

Im a modded minecrafter, got this in my suggestions for some reason. Gotta say, Damn you are fast. And you know what you are doing. I personaly do not play this game at all but it was still fun to watch! Keep it up!

This is pretty cool, though a bit overkill for my needs. One thing, Iron chests are a dead-end item. Steel chests can be recycled into the various logistic network chests, while Wooden chests are great for material buffers or, if you use steel chests for even that, burned in forges and boilers. Iron chests cannot be reused for anything.
@KatherineOfSky
@KatherineOfSky 7 лет назад
They can indeed be recycled... I use them at my train stations. I don't need the capacity of steel chests there, (and iron chests are 5 times cheaper than steel ones!)

Firstly, I'd like to thank you for the Layouts and everything else...but, to my factory, I find very challenging to do what you do. Because I dont have the resources to automate my robots and so on. This layouts, not just from this video but from others, I consider just overwhelmingly difficult. Btw, thx very much for the video.
@KatherineOfSky
@KatherineOfSky 7 лет назад
Thanks! It's normal to start a base and build it small the first few times you play the game through. Later on, you build bigger right from the start, so it's easier to gather the resources you need. You'll get to that point! Another part of factorio is just experience and familiarity with what comes next -- that just comes with doing several playthroughs. Have fun!

Great tutorial.. I like your compact designs.. (also: be sure to check the condition on the fast inserter towards your yellow-belt requester chest.. it's still set to "if yellow underground belts < 50" :))

I tried this several years ago. My conclusion was there was I was always draining the bus dry and needing to build plants along the way to replenish it. I have since adopted the "ore bus" method. The only things I put on the bus are: iron ore, copper ore, stone, and coal. Then each plant smelts what it needs when it needs it.
