The Winchester 70 is also one of the absolute best rifles ever designed. I have one in 30-06, 308, 270 Win, 270 WSM. Likely the most beautiful factory rifle ever made!

I own several Tikka rifles and you are spot on Randy. They are great rifles for the money.

6.5 55 is a really good Cartridge. and underrated. it does all that 6.5 creed can. longer barrel life and brass life. and max for max it will have higher muzzle velocity's

I have a 1982 Ruger 300 win mag m77. It may be a fluke, but it shoots very well. I bought it when I was just old enough to buy one. It was to go elk hunting, but life delt me a fall and disabled me for walking. I still shoot it, and it groups well. Longest shot 300 yards on a deer laying down facing me. The 180 grain went through it and nearly cut its back leg off. Largest buck I ever killed. Thank you, Randy.

I shoot tika stainless in New Zealand. Accurate, great trigger, feed Every time! and terrific in our rain and thick scrub. Magic

I have a Tikka T3x Superlite in 7mm-08……it’s just awesome. I don’t think there is any rifle on the market……under $1000 that can compare to a Tikka right now.

After doing a lot of research on these lower end budget rifles and I found it pretty hard to beat the Howa 1500, I got one brand new for $513 after tax from PSA.

I chose a Sauer 100 Classic XT over the Tikka because I wanted it in 6.5x55 Swede and I waited nearly a year for Tikka to have one in stock . I love the Sauer and I love the Swede round.

I have a 1964 model 70 in 3006. First year they went to the push feed action. This rifle does also lock the bolt. It feels and holds great and shoots very nice groups with almost all the ammo i have tried in it. Bought it used for $100 when i was 16 and just recently put a new vortex crossfire 4x12 scope on it. Killed many deer with this rifle.

Tikka and howa 1500 are the best bets in cheap rifles. And a savage 110 if you can tolerate the looks.

Spot on with Tikka!! My M695 whitetail hunter, .300 win mag shoots .67” groups@ 100yds. The palm swell, bolt, and trigger, IMO, 2nd to none!!

I have a combination of the first 2 rifles. It's a tikka chambered in 6.5 Swede. Both the rifle and cartridge are everything you said they were, and maybe a little more.

I like building my own rifles. It was in the 80's l bought a box full of Mauser 98 actions. So far l have built 10 of all types of calibers. Built most of them for my family for free. I have built anything from a 22-250 to a .338 Win. Mag. using the 98 action. They are simply one awesome action to start a rifle.

Randy I had that exact model 70 featherweight in 6.5x55 and another one in 7x57.loved them both. I lent the 6.5x55 to my friend when his 308 missed 2 deer in the same morning. He shot his best ever deer with it that afternoon and fell in love with it. He begged me to sell it to him.I had the 7x57 so I sold it to him and he hunted with it every year right up until he passed away last year. As far as the the safety that doesn’t lock the bolt. I have a spool of 3/8 bongie cord that I tie in a loop and stretch around the trigger guard and bolt so it won’t open when walking this way if you jump something and need a fast shot just flick off the safety and let fly and if you need a second shot takes a fraction of a second to flick it off and work the bolt you can use a rubber band the same way. I wouldn’t buy a Remington rifle for years till I figured this out. Hope all is well With you and your family Randy. Live free and stay safe..

Great presentation Mr Selby. I’ve had a number of rifles over my life but never a custom gun. However I also had several model 70s, Remingtons, Sakos n others. But your recommendation on the Tikka is spot on. I came into 2 of them in 270 n 7 Rem. Both shoot exceptionally well with factory ammo Love your videos.

With exception of a few all the elk I’ve taken was with a Win 70 featherweight in 270 a great rifle.

My Winchester M70’s are chambered in 7x57 and 375 H&H, both are topped with Kahles scopes. I’ve never needed more.

Looking at possibly getting my wife a Model 70 in 7mm-08 for her first deer rifle. But, I love my Remington 700 in .280.

I've got a Winchester Model 70 Featherweight in 7x57. It's too pretty to hunt with so I use a 7-08 Remington Model 7 in a Fiberglas stock.

I like projects... so I buy cheap rifles, bed them cerakote etc sometimes even re-barrel them. But when I buy a cheap $500 rifle... I have more money for a nice Leopold!

Good presentation, I like the Sako rifles over the Tikka rifles because you can leave the safety on while unloading the rifle, they have a little button in front of the safety to unlock the bolt. I love the model 700 and 70 rifles, they're two of the finest rifles that have been ever made!

My neighbor has a Winchester model 70 Feather Weight chambered in 270. That rifle is beautiful and my other neighbor up the road has the Model 70 chambered in 300 Winchester magnum and the stock is the curly maple these are two of the nicest rifles I’ve ever seen sir in front of me that is. Being pertty don’t put anything on the ground though. My Savage 111 chambered in 25-06 I’ve had it for 11 years and have managed to keep it great looking and it has put deer wild hogs coyotes ground hogs down for the count. I’ve never shot a factory round though it. I got everything together to load for it then got the scope and started cranking out rounds for it. I started with the Nosler 85gr ballistic tip and they’re coming out the muzzle at a hair over 3,600fps. I went up to a 100gr Nosler BT and it’s just a little over 3,300fps at the muzzle. I don’t shoot it much i don’t want to burn the barrel out.

I had the exact same rifle in the same cartridge as yours, but mine was stainless. Unfortunately the barrel had a loose spot in it and it wouldn't shoot for crap. It was made around the time New Haven was going down the drain. I wish I still had it, though.

I have a way to carry those Remington 700's that will protect the bolt. I put the sling behind my elbow and grab the magazine with my hand on the same arm. Then rest the butt of the rifle on my hip. I use this especially when I'm in grizz country. I shoot right handed and carry with my left arm. I can bring the rifle into battery quite quickly and I can control the rifle while carrying very well. If something bumps the bolt, I am immediately aware of it. I have also slung a R 700 upside-down (barrel down) at times. That puts the bolt handle into my right side. That way is not my favorite but it is functional.....not very comfortable though. I also put my sling on upside-down. Especially if it is a padded sling. That gets the padding behind my elbow.

Randy, I might have lucked out but my Christensen Arms Mesa in 6.5 prc with factory 143 gr. shoots 1/2 moa out to 300 plus. Clean cold barrel will do as well with first shots. I have several rifles that with fouling shots and handloads will match the 6.5 prc accuracy but not at 300 plus yards.

I have the model 70, new production CRF, all weather stainless. I have nothing but good things to say about it. Hasn't let me down. I definitely prefer that 3 position style of safety. The rifle is capable of producing sub MOA groups provided you feed it good ammo. Oddly enough it loves Hornady ELD-X and SST'S. For Whitetails back east, said bullets are acceptable. I wouldn't use them for elk or anything bigger. Im in the process of trying different bullets like Barnes and Noslers for a future elk hunt.

The problem with many cartridges today is that you simply cannot easily find brass for them. We're in a very sad state in regards to reloading.

My Tikka is the best rifle I own.

This year I have purchased 5 Tikka rifles in 270, one in 300WSM and one in 300WM. Last year I bought one in 308. All but the 308 shoot as well or better than any custom I have, down to one hole groups with my handloads. The 270s are the most accurate of all especially with BVLDs in 150 grain and the 150 NBTs

I know most people don’t like the Remington 770’s but the one I traded for a couple years ago I’ll put it this way the 300 Winchester magnum rifle can easily out shoot me. Course that’s not saying much on my half. They’re cheap made but people don’t take care of their guns neither. If I bolt a rifle and it’s not smooth I put oil on it i don’t drown it in oil but I put enough. After I found the load it loves I can remember the the exact powder load I wrote in my notes but in front of the load sets a Nosler Accubond 150gr bullet. I’ve taken my share of deer and hogs I’ve not tried a hog with my 300 yet but i will but this combination in the 300 will completely turn a deer plum around in its bed. I took a big 7 point whitetail year before last he was bedded in a field with a doe and he was laying head pointed left and at 263 yards I ranged him and I squeezed the trigger and before I heard the crack of the gun I seen this through my scope on the gun it spun him around and pointed his head to the left. It’s a beast for sure.

Cant beat a weatherby weatherguard bronze for 800$. There built the oldschool way w solid recoil lug and square flat bottom action. Just as if not more accurate as a tika But built way more rugged.

How would you rate the push feed Winchester model 70 compared to the control round feed. I always thought they were CRF, but i guess winchester manufactured quite a few PF.

Very nice selection. Do I recall correctly, but do you also make single shot rifles? The more rifle combos I see the more I like them.

You didn't say weather that first rifle was controlled feed. If it is, I'd get it in .30-06, ditch the scope and fit it with a receiver aperture sight, and fit a stripper feed guide. Using stripper clips is a faster reload than fumbling with detachable magazines. You can get stripper clips for .30-06 cartridges all the time. How's that for a custom rifle?

I'm really interested in building a 8 mm Mauser 98 large ring into a weatherby 6.5 RPM. From what I have gathered the rebated rim is the same as a 30-06 therefore I shouldn't have to do any bolt face modification. I'm curious what are your thoughts on a build like that... I want to do all the updates like a synthetic carbon stock from Magpul, timny trigger, and Gentry 3 position safety that I have on a brno 98 I built into a wonderful shooting 30-06 with a Douglas 26" #4 and is a 1:10 that's threaded and I run a EC tuner brake, my young son loves shoot it and now he wants to build a Mauser together and I believe that the weatherby 6.5 RPM will be a really good combination and the perfect caliber for anything he will ever chase as he grows into being a hunter.

When you build a custom rifle, are you building the action too?

The only thing I have against that rifle is the plastic stock i take the shoulder butt pad off and take a bunch of grocery bags plastic that is like we all got a million of them and stuff the inside of the stock full. It stops the loud bang and knocks when I hit my stock and my stand. It don’t add any weight to the gun.

I don’t understand the tikka thing. I just don’t like them. I recommend a person spend the money on the optics. Iv had 2 scope failures over the years 1 on a once in a lifetime tag. Both times ended up in a wounded animal and I lost one of them. Still bothers me 15-20 years later.

Have Tikka in 7-08 great freaking rifle, shoots ~ half inch 3 shot groups . Very smooth action and trigger is good as well
