Having high standards is both a blessing and a curse!
On one hand, it is a fantastic motivator to always give your all, to push the envelope, to aim for greatness. It's been a driving force in my life and my career.
Whether it's a live show, a recording, or a piece of merchandise: When you see the name MANOWAR, you can be assured we gave our all to give our fans the absolute best!
On the other hand, when you look for the ultimate, you have to search high and low.
And sometimes you'll find out that what you're looking for doesn't exist yet!
If you're crazy enough, like myself, you may then decide that you have to design your ideal bass yourself and have it built from scratch. This is what's happening right now. It is not the first time, by the way.
In this conversation with my friends and collaborators, Dan "The Man" Austin, who is currently building my new dream bass based on my specs, and Dirk Kloiber, MANOWAR’s long-time Audio Engineer, we discuss whether all factory guitars and bass guitars are junk, and what we all are looking for in the perfect instrument.

When you guys mentioned sound is always evolving, I have to say: "Laut und Hart" is one of the cleanest recordings I ever heard in my life. Also happy to see Dirk as well. (Short story: When I was still in the audio engineering school, our teachers asked us to bring what we think the best recording drum sound in an album and find out how it was recorded. Microphones and technique - which studio was it and so on. My choice was Battle Hymns 2011 and I e-mailed Dirk about it and got a reply! Told my teachers (most of them were metalheads by the way) and they said it was a smart thing to do try and reach out and also very cool that I got a reply! I never forget that!)

Echoing a lot of viewers here, but, great to see so much new content from you Joey. Great topic to discuss. My guitarist found a second hand Eko, good condition, needed some love. He spent hours working on it, popped in some new pickups, and it sounded way better than some of the stupidly expensive stuff the other bands around us had. Just goes to show, price ≠ quality

Well if it’s a vintage one I understand mine really is too. I think mine is a 72 it’s been through so much at one time I had five pick ups on it. Great talk! I look forward to seeing more content like this in the channel, experienced musicians sharing their wisdom. I had similar experiences when I started getting more serious about music and looking for the right instruments for me, and realized that finding a standard factory built guitar that perfectly suited me would be impossible. If I want a guitar that fulfills my personal ideals, I have to craft one myself. That's when I began taking interest in customizing my gear.

You’re on the right path if you can’t find one that you like enough, you will have to build it from scratch. Maybe you’ll get lucky and find a body that you enjoy. The neck is all important and of course the body should fit your body although the body can be sculpted. Very interesting information, I look forward to future videos of your new bass being built. In response to what you wrote in the description about your merchandise being the best: I still have the 'Fighting the World' t-shirt that I bought in January 1989 when you played Peabody's Down Under in the Cleveland Flats. I was a skinny 17-year-old when I bought that shirt, I wore it for at least four years until working out made me too big to wear it. The point is that I must have worn and washed that shirt at least a hundred times, the material is still black and the screen print still looks new. It makes a nice piece of wall art now.

Joey could take any remotely playable bass and sound great on it. And the audience would love it! Any great player will play great on pretty much anything (except stupidly bad instruments, maybe). I think a good, competently built instrument (widely available and affordable today) should be a priority, but beyond that, most musicians will be better off spending their energies honing their craft than perusing forums on the latest and greatest mods. This being said, nothing wrong with going down that rabbit hole if inclined to do so! Though I would learn how to setup your guitars, first! Great to see you in great health, Joey! Hello Andre, what a great friend and great person you are and have always been you and your family are a blessing on this earth. You’re a great player and you have a great deal of knowledge and experience and I think we all have to go down that rabbit hole to some degree, but you are right about learning how to set up the guitar because that will tell you first when you learn what it’s all about if the neck is screwed up to begin with and if the frets are screwed up to begin with and then all of a sudden you have to make a decision Are you really happy with that guitar enough to perhaps replace the fingerboard and frets do you know what I’m talking about so I’m happy to see great comments like this. Thanks for all the info. You are right, I never had the balls to modify my Ibanez JEM 777, because it was such an expensive instrument back then. But I was never happy with the sound. I should have done it. And by the way, Dirk was not only a guitar player, he was a BEAST on the guitar.

Thank you for the really exciting insides about your instrument and style of playing!!!! You mentioned the moisture and temperature changes in the air and how they affect the wood (especially from the neck) - and I know the trussrods from the Rickies are a bit special :D Do you have any concerns about the aluminium neck regarding the temperature? It is easily too hot when it gets too much stagelight or too cold when it is winter and the venue is still not heated up? I know, this faces every player of any bass or guitar with an aluminmium neck. But I guess there might be some reason behind it is not used that often. Did you also consider carbon for the neck? But I guess for the Kings Of Metal can't be too much metal in a bass guitar ;) THANK YOU again for this great content - I am really looking forward to see/ hear more!!!! Cheers from Germany \m/

Thank you so much for the comment. Brother carbon is cool, but it’s very very difficult to shape. However, that’s not the case with Metal. You're absolutely right guys, couldn't agree more. I've owned and tried quite expensive guitars that were great and and some where crap. I've also tried and owned not so expensive guitars that were really good and of course some that was just absolutely junk. And when it comes to customization, I always had to do something to get them personalized. It could be pickup swapping, other hardware modifications or as you said, put out the chisel and carve away obstacles (or modify them in one way or other) it's a lifetime quest to get the right tool and that tool is an extension of your soul.

Glad I stumbled on this channel. Great content, Joey! Really enjoyed this conversation. I've played guitar for almost 20 yrs, and have bought, sold, and traded guitars professionally for the last decade, and you're exactly right about guitars. Every one is different, just like every person is different. They maybe similar, but there's always variations. I've had 3-4 of the exact same model of guitar at the same time, and they are were different. Neck shapes were different, the color varied slightly, etc, etc. Also, like you said, your tastes change over time, and you constantly are tweaking things, ever so slightly, but they make all the difference. Loved the idea, about the all aluminum bass. Hope to see you showing that one off in a video soon!

More of this nerdy stuff! I remember when we recorded the first Sinergy album Alexi used a pretty cheap Jackson into a Engl Savage. Nothing fancy at all. But it was recorded to tape. I have a handbuilt Pele 2 made by Maor Appelbaum that makes magic on bass! Its a passive unit that I highly recommend on the quest for tone! :)

Another point regarding customization is that it makes it "yours". It gives your instrument a character. It strengthen the bond, and you get to know it inside out. Obviously the more you know every inch, every detail of your instrument the better, and more control you'll have over it. Customization deepens knowledge and bonding! Great stuff. I have a question: What design decisions and configurations would you say have helped achieve the unique bass sounds of the various eras of Manowar? I've always wanted to replicate the bass sound from Sign of the Hammer, especially Guyana and Thunderpick.

Well, it said, in the video to combination of whatever I played at the time, I was definitely using lighter strings back. Then I prefer heavier strings, now pretty much, the same speakers, electro voice, and there was less close miking on that album that’s about all I can think of that was different, oh yes, I just remember different pics to the pics I was using were a little bit softer, large triangles if I recall correctly thanks for reaching out and please subscribe to the channel and tell all your friends to join us and let me know what else you’d like to know we’re seeing the future

“Enjoy the journey” Hear that everyone? Read that aloud a few times, then yell it. Rinse, repeat etc. I’ve found many people who stopped enjoying their journey for whatever reason, and that’s sad when you see it. If you have to change your journey do it. The key is you are happy doing it. That long term happiness/ enjoyment is the thing, not the fix of the hour. Hail and kill, swords in the wind, rubber side down unless we are talking condoms then rubber over not under, and with blood in our voices spit in their faces because they sure as hell have spit in ours.

Joey I´m brazilian and due to work I have lived in mexico for four years. I have something around 25 guitars and every summer and every winter all trussrods went haywire and I had to adjust 25 guitars twice an year. not a fun activity, humidity in mexico city is fucking crazy around the year.

The 3rd bass comes with a stereo output - two separate pickups, two separate channels, but a stereo jack rather than two mono jacks. Requires a special cable. With a standard cable, only one pickups works. It was exactly as I wanted it. However, hope you and some others like the video. Honestly, if English is not your first language, it can be quite challenging to do such RU-vid videos. More videos to come. Especially some sound demos. Every video will be better.

I’ve always used a mixture of heavy strings from extremely heavy to like a 105 or 110 on the E just sometimes lighter strings for bending, or perhaps faster playing although it depends sometimes it’s easier to play fast on heavier strings because they’re tighter more like a snare drum and the pic bounces quicker. It all depends really if you’re recording a record sometimes you need to use several different guitars with several different string gauges. It’s not unusual to do that of course not very practical life, but people still do that as well. I think the attitude I have is whatever is necessary at the time must be done but thank you. Thank you for this Video. I had last Year a very cheap nylon string guitar bought (I don't know the englisch word). I had learned guitar as I was 14 Jears old (1984) at my Grandpa. With this new guitar, I begun to play from notes. I was at a guitar school to learn the absolut beginning to play guitar, I was so much better then the other People, but I had fun and we became easy notes I can learn ( we had only played the chords). But at it was endet, the other People wont play at the next cours and I cant buy a teacher only for me. But I had buyed notes in C-Dur to learn reading them by playing and I bought a cheap western Guitar, it has more power. Now I can play some easy songs and I try to play in 5th and 12th sorry in German LAGE. I dond know the englisch word. I try to learn two notes at the same time playing. At X-mas I play with my sister sche Mandoline, I the chords with Guitar. I have learned, there is no bad song to learn and my Western guitar has costed 88€ new and I love it. The nylon string guitar was with strings and gigbag and pipe what wrong pipes😂, and learning book 60€. But I had begun to play. Sorry, my englisch is not so good

But since 2016, when my back after two operation is demaged and I can't work, I remembered to the past and bought my guitars (and the Manowar tripple Album). Now I have Notes and Tabs of Your great Song. I hope, I will be faster. I play it so slowly, that you can't hear a melody😂. But I will try to be better. Informative video. I'll add two important things. First, know when to give up on a style of guitar. Slash may be your biggest role model, but a Les Paul just may not be your thing no matter how many "$20,000" models you chop up. Last, please please explore all other options before "chopping up" an authentic '57 P-Bass (for example)! Rock on.

I watched this video two times. Some parts are not so easy for those, like me, who are not musicians. I feel this channel will be more technically oriented and I appreciate that you're Going deeper into the behind the scene of your instrument, it is very interesting. When you speak you make things seems so easy..if only you could speak a little slower 🤭 sometimes you are so excited in telling things that you go so fast 😅 I'm curious to know more about the aluminum bass. Interesting material. Light but strong. It is easy to shape, but hard to change it. Will it be a 4 string or an 8 string bass?

I’m sorry you’re right about that. I do tend to talk fast sometimes add in the future. I’m going to make sure that the subtitles are on. Also that will help add just so you know that you can slow down the speed on RU-vid videos quite easily and it makes a big difference. I do it as well for some people right now I’m making a fourth string piccolo bass first and then using that add the mistakes that we make to then make a fourth string and then after that the same thing for an 8 string that’s the plan anyway thank you for your support

Factory or boutique, you could have ten instruments all made the same exact way with the same exact materials. All ten will vary slightly. And maybe one or two will really stand out to a particular person. The best thing to do is pick it up and play to see if there's a vibe.

As a beginner you should use the best possible gear. A professional guitarist probably can play amazing on even the cheapest guitar. He can set up the guitar perfectly. But when you are a beginner and you know nothing about the correct setup you won't get happy with "starter" guitars. That's the same with sport equipment, cars, cooking knives etc. The better you get, the worse the equipment can be and you will achieve good results anyway.

Being someone who is in my 40's, pushing 50. I feel that back in the day low priced guitars were crap. The low priced guitars of today are of significantly better quality than those. Most of my guitars are Les Paul Standards, all good ones that made the cut and I kept. So I measure guitars to those that I already love. and I am constantly surprised by much lower priced guitars at the quality, playability, and tone of these guitars. I don't think you need to spend thousands of dollars on a guitar anymore in order to get a "good" one. No matter what guitar you buy, and how much you spend on it, you will most likely end up customizing it to some extent anyway.

I wont record anything until my instrument is stable. Unfortunately I can't get one and I have to make all the modifications myself. If stock factory guitars were suitable, Gibson would consistently place bridge mounting holes in the correct locations so the bridge wouldn't constantly be shifting, Fender and ibanez necks wouldn't shift, or have fitting issues between the neck and the pocket. Locking nuts would be flat on the bottom and the threads for the mounting screws wouldn't be done so as to cause the nut to want to sit out of the level plane. Guitar bodies what get bumped or moved while on the C&C machines would not pass inspections, and the frets on my fender HM strat and my 3K Adrian smith signature would all be in parallel..

One of the most unique cusom instruments would be that old Rickenbacker. The neck is crazy thin but appears to have guitar strings not bass?. There is so much left over room on the bass and treble side yet the neck itself looks very thin. The pickups are for guitar? Gauge of strings? I am referring the one played on the live DVD Absolute Power. While many people will find a factory guitar they like (for me it was late 80s early 90s Ibanez RG 5xx\7xx) Joey surely would never find one to suit his style\setup. Those I have seen Joey use are all one of a kind. How about the 8 string models? I would like to see a explanation of your customizations one day on You Tube🍻I would mention, for factory guitars, they can often feel stiff and remind me more of uncomfortable furniture lol.

I'll try to answer this the best I can my original Rickenbacker all of the wood in stock the frets and the fretboard of course have been replaced and yes the string spacing changes over the years but there always medium gauge beats strings sometimes Nicoll sometimes stainless steel and eighth string bases are all custom-made and the strings always very on that as well as the pick ups. In fact, I'm putting a new set of pick ups on this week to, and yes, as far as factory guitars, you just have to find one that is solid you can change everything else to suit your needs please subscribe and tell all your friends to join us

once when i was young and stupid (ok i'm still a bit stupid) i compared my 57 ri strat to a real 1964 it was like comparing a behringer preamp to a neve .night and day....when fender started using rosewood fretboards in 1959 the electric guitar has reached the peak of it's evolution and since then it's mostly downhill. mass market guitars are made for beginners (china indonesia mexico) and blues lawyers (usa!!) and the integrity went from gibson and fender to boutique builders. the top of the line 50k greenie les paul has an aged case, the sum of it's components is barely 2k but it's the perfect trap for a blues lawyer who's seen it all. when paul rivera became head designer for fender amps in the early eighties he said that no one who worked there could even play guitar! gibson's former ceo was levi's jeans ceo before. you get the picture...either go vintage or build your own.

Guitars in the $100-$500 range have components that wear out fast and can be of overall inferior quality, but anything $500 and up is going to be a decent instrument. The MIM range of Fender strats is mostly excellent. The standard US strats are great off-the-shelf instruments, and anything over $1000 is pretty much a safe bet in terms of material quality, although it may not be the right instrument for you.

i have a magical ibanez guitar stock factory s4 that i bought for 120€ in a pawn shop that just sounds amazing, i don't know why, it shouldn't because it´s a 200€ guitar. but it sounds so fucking amazing!

Interesting vid. for bass players or instrument customizers but I consider it is quite overwhelming for the ones that are regular Manowar listeners and lovers. I as a fan not interested in so many details, just want moments with the band, etc. Don't take my wrong, but I would want to see new song been recorded rather than this kind of debates...

Thanks for taking the time to write I understand what you're saying but I think if you can apply this even though you're maybe not a musician to buying a car a house or anything that you can think of you can see that no matter what you do you have to find something as a basis and then research and continually develop and refine things to your own personal taste and that's the point of this I think anyone can learn from this at least to see the level of detail that goes into our work and our commitment to our fans please subscribe to the channel and tell your friends to join us I'm sure there's a lot more content that you will enjoy

Advice I agree with: Try to play as many guitars as you can to find what works best for you. Signature guitars ( as opposed to what the bald guy said ) are built to the same spec as the artist's guitars. Example: The Mustaine V from Gibson is the same as Dave would play. Just as the Dean was before it, and the Jackson was before that. Artist sets the specs and the manufacturer makes batches of them. It's not rocket science. Advice I disagree with: Unless you're willing to take a huge hit financially when you want to move on, then hacking up a nice guitar to see if you can get something better out of it isn't recommended. Dude says himself that he's been chasing tone for over 40 years and never achieved what he wants. It's akin to OCD. Chasing something that isn't there. If you can't get what you want out of the instrument, I'd recommend you sell/trade it and find something you like better, rather than hacking it up. Please note that swapping pickups or some worn out hardware is not the same as hacking up the guitar. If you like the way the guitar plays but want to try different pickups for a different sound, go for it. You may/may not be happy with the results, and if you're not happy and want to move on, the instrument should be easy enough to sell. Unless you're prepared to take the financial hit, don't scallop the fretboard to see if you like it better. Chances are, you ruin the guitar all together, and even if you do it right, you reduce the number of potential buyers greatly, reducing your potential to recoup money.

Thanks so much for your comment and taking the time to write such a thoughtful and well planned out response it’s greatly appreciated. I hope you will also appreciate the level of experience sitting in this forum, and that many of the famous artist who have signature guitars of Pastor outdoors, and for one reason or another those guitars are in few ways or in great ways at times different from the actual signature models being sold, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the guitars are not the same. They may be to the artist spec, but artist, specs, change, or recording guitars may be the same guitars as the live guitars, but they may use different components in any event. We appreciate your comment as far as taking the financial hit goes we are professionals in the industry and we have very little time as it is so at times we are forced to take a financial hit rather than look for a buyer for one of our experimental guitars it’s all on investment in the end and a tax write off and time is money also so we have to move ahead if we hack up an expensive guitar that is the price of research and development but you’re clearly an experience person, and we respect and value your opinion and comments thank you so much please subscribe to the channel and tell your friends to join us and once again, thank you kindly for your time and effort

@ 5:35 If this guy thinks that older people aren't buying new guitars and it's only beginners buying new, then I don't think he has a clue. Who keeps Gibson, FMIC, PRS, Music Man and all the custom shops in business? Beginners? Eff no. It's old timers with money, or at least intermediate players with some savings, looking to get a step up from their starter axe.
