This is how this album, "Dark Side of the Moon", ends. The heartbeat you hear during the fade-out is also how the album begins. Thus, demonstrating an endless cycle; the human condition replayed in every generation. This album is brilliantly profound.

Pink Floyd's use of the term "dark side of the moon" is very simply meant to be a metaphor for insanity. They were very deeply affected by the (at times) profound mental illness on their bandmate (Syd Barrett) and wrote/dedicated much of their most heralded material to him. Most of this album and Wish You Were Here were a tribute to him and reflected their sense of loss of him not being there with them. The song Shine On You Crazy Diamond is, IMO, their best track and is an example of their love for their missing brother.

"Dark side of the Moon" was on the Billboard charts for 14 years straight without falling off. A World record that still stands today!

Listening to individual songs from this album is like reading random chapters in a book

You REALLY need to listen to the whole album. For me it's like someone is looking from the normal side (lit side of the moon) at another person who lost himself mentally (the dark side of the moon) but in the end we're all on the dark side sometimes in our life.

The last line was provided by Gerry O'Driscoll, a doorman at Abbey Road studios where the album was recorded. He said it in response to the question “What is the ‘dark side of the moon’?” His full answer was “There is no dark side of the moon really, matter of fact it’s all dark. The only thing that makes it look light is the sun.”

This is an album that you have to hear from start to finish in one sitting.

My favorite song by Pink Floyd. Always gives me chills.

The whole album is about one of the band members, Syd Barrett, descending into insanity from schizophrenia. The line from Brain Damage "and when the band You're in starts playing different tunes" actually happened on stage, as Syd was hearing different songs in his head than what the band was performing. Pink Floyd had two albums that were specifically about Syd's descent into madness, Dark Side of the Moon, about the vagaries of life leading to madness, and Wish You Were Here, a lament for the lost band member, which accuses the music industry of driving them all to madness.

I was 12yrs old when this album came out and grabbed me; Pink Floyd has taken me on many a wondrous journey since. Incredible band that is unmatched.

The dark side of the moon is the side we don't see. The moon doesn't revolve like the earth and other planets do. It's a metaphor. This song is about Sid Barrett their original leader and lead guitarist. He dropped too much acid and got lost in his head. Ended up in a mental institution for a while. The line "and if the band you're in starts playing different tunes..." is reference to an incident where Sid was trying to teach them a song he was working on and they would join in and he'd say no that isn't it and then start playing something else... the band wasn't messing up HE was... This song, and Shine on you Crazy Diamond are both in reference to Sid Barrett.

To get the full effect of what this song and album really mean, try the entire Dark Side of the Moon album sometime, it will make more sense and you get the flow that way. For a stand alone Floyd song, try Echoes, both the original studio and the 2 part videos Live in the ruins of Pompeii, it was 2 parts because it opened and closed the film about that event. Floyd is a long journey to be savored every step of the way, just relax, vibe and go with the flow and they will take you to places you did not know existed! Enjoy. 🎵

The album is an endless loop. The heartbeat at the end of this song (the last track on the album) ties into the heartbeat at the beginning of the first song on the album. Listening to the entire album in order is like turning pages in a book.

Another good choice, as I am a lifelong Pink Floyd fan. And in fact, I was born the year this album came out. Also, it is the sixth best selling album of all time!

Arguably the greatest album ever. It has spent more weeks in Billboards top 200 than any other album in history, by a wide margin. You really should listen to all of PF "middle era" albums in their entirety to appreciate the meaning and the music.

This came out a half a century ago. And it's still so relevant. This is Roger Waters' masterpiece. This album is one of the best selling LP's of all time selling over 50 MILLION copies. The album itself STILL goes platinum every year as new fans find it and old fans replace old records and CD's. Meant, by Waters, to be a one long 42 minute suite, it had to be broken up into songs so the band could be paid for an "album" & not a single. This album was on the Billboard Hot 100 for 987 weeks (That's 19 YEARS on the charts, JUST INSANE). It was selected for preservation in the United States National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". It literally is a PERFECT album. #1 of all time in my opinion. The lengths they went to, to pull this off in 1973, with no computers and just analog tape, is just astounding!!

This is the last song of the best concept album of all time. It's a culmination of the whole album and doesn't work as well as stand alone songs. Try the whole album and see if you like it better in context. Thanks for the great comments as always.

The tune continues as they share a smirk in unison further allowing the mood of the masterpiece to manipulate their minds. A good clue to help understand this album is that it's main theme revolves around: “WHAT DRIVES PEOPLE CRAZY”. (BREATHE); If the performance required in life can drive people crazy. (ON THE RUN); If the frantic rush of life can drive people crazy. (TIME); If the fleeting aspect of passing time can drive people crazy. (THE GREAT GIG IN THE SKY); If the thought of the inevitable end (death), can drive people crazy. (MONEY); If love, or lack of money can drive people crazy. (US AND THEM); If the differences in class of people or the power grant to them can drive people crazy. (ANY COLOR YOU LIKE); If the illusion of being able to choose can drive people crazy. (BRAIN DAMAGE); If the many rules of life (keep off the grass) and all the previous points can drive people crazy. (ECLIPSE); Since our influence in this world comes down to what is within our reach, then even though the brightness of the sun may be eclipsed by the darkness of the moon. But anyway, (I'll see you on the dark side of the moon).

That album is just incredible. Life lessons, the search for the meaning, human sentiments, it has everything.

The lyrics PF comes up with are the deep, profound, and have somewhat hidden messages. I loved this song ever since I first heard it.

Great reaction! This album-like most of their albums-are concept albums, meaning each song blends into the next to tell a larger story. This album is widely considered to be the best ever recorded. To understand the full meaning and experience, you have to listen to it, beginning to end, in one sitting. It is truly an amazing experience. Great reactions!!

In college, when this first came out, I recall sitting, with around 6 or so friends in someone’s darkened room, candles lit, more stoned than ever before, being quite unnerved, yet so in awe of this track.

The song is about mental illness. ("Every day the paper boy brings more" refers to photos of politicians in the newspapers). The subsequent album "Wish You Were Here" is about band co-founder Syd Barrett leaving the band due his descent into madness.

Dark Side of the Moon hit the Billboard Top 200 Album charts at #95 in March of 1973. It only hit #1 for a week, but remained in the top 200 for 736 consecutive weeks, until July of 1988. It has been back, and holds both the consecutive week record, and the overall record at well over 900. I agree about listening to the whole album start to finish. Many of the songs blend into the next. And then there's the Wizard of Oz connection...

Hey Guys, An enduring myth about the Moon is that it doesn't rotate. While it's true that the Moon keeps the same face to us, this only happens because the Moon rotates at the same rate as its orbital motion, a special case of tidal locking called synchronous rotation.

The greatest Rock album of all time, it was in Billboards Top selling albums list for an unprecedented 958 weeks, and over 50 million, (and counting), albums sold! You guys are discussing the meaning of this song in the wrong context, the whole album is the story, not one song. Virtually all Pink Floyd albums are concept albums telling a story, the "Dark Side Of The Moon" album is about life and death, with a side nod to Syd Barrett in "Brain Damage" The very beginning of the album, and the very end, showcase a slowed down heartbeat. You guys have done other "Dark Side Of The Moon" album songs, likw "Us And Them" which is about war, and "Time", which is about how time flies by in our lives. Also "Great Gig In The Sky" which is about "death" and "horror". I put quotation marks with death and horror because those are the exact words PF told Clair Torry to think about, for a while, before she did the wordless vocals she sings and screams in Great Gig. The song "Brain Damage" is the Syd Barrett reference, if you know Barretts story it is clear. Syd Barrett was one of the founding members of PF in 1964, but he was forced to leave the band by 1967 because of massive LSD use and mental health issues. His good friend David Gilmour took over as lead singer and guitarist of PF. There's a direct reference to Barrett in one of the lyrics in Brain Damage, the verse goes,.. ......."And If The Band You're In Starts Playing Different Tunes" Syd Barrett, near the end, was so out of it, so unhinged from reality,... that when the band would be rehearsing, and even at a show or two, Syd would go off and begin to play a different song than the song the other three band members were playing!!

This is the last song on the album. It ends with the heart beat. If you listen to the entire album, it starts out with a heart beat as well. Birth to death... Best album ever!

Sid Barrett couldn't live sober. The lunatic on the grass is Sid. A true poet, a true visionary, it's a shame he wasn't those without drugs.

The Moon is gravitationally locked and revolves on its axis in exactly the same amount of time (a lunar day) that it takes to complete one orbit of the Earth (a lunar month, about 29.5 Earth days). The upshot of this is that the same surface of the moon is always pointed toward the Earth. What we call the dark side is the other side that cannot be seen from the Earth and that is always pointed away from us. However, the Moon, in and of itself, does not produce any light, it merely reflects the light of the Sun. Therefore, if you could remove the Sun from the equation, the whole of the Moon would be dark. Hence the final statement on the album.

First heard this album almost 50 years ago. A staple in every well stocked college students record collection in the 70’s. Never tired of it. The unique sound recorded at Abbey Road studios. The people talking in the background on several songs (McCartney and others) were recorded in the Abbey Road studio lunchroom. This recording still sells a few hundred thousand copies a year.

Brad, Brad, Brad...the moon is basically just a GIGANTIC rock kin outer space, it is big enough to catch the suns light and reflect it back in the nighttime sky...and eclipses are not a daily thing.....Lex, once more reels him back to earth...God dam I love this channel :)

Pink Floyd is definitely a vibe. It certainly helps to be under the influence. Not advocating it, but when I was high AF, putting on a Floyd Album was literally a spiritual experience back in the day. One of the most creative, amazing bands in history, no doubt. Sober now, and would still stand by that.

"What's the dark side of the moon?" There is an intended interpretation, but, as with all art, appreciation is on the client side and not the server. Whatever meaning you got from this is correct. It is correct because your interpretation is a reflection of you. Your experiences. Your demons. Your triumphs. Your values. This is the purpose of art.

As others have said, Dark Side of The Moon is a concept album where one song blends into the next with interconnecting themes - best listened to from beginning to end (without interruption).

Pink Floyd is a trip in itself. Kinda like the cold side of the sun which sounds like a cool song they could have written.

I would play this song when things went all wrong in my life, or after a break up or other stuff that happened. It just, for me diminished the impact of the event and allowed me to move on in life. One of my favorite rock songs ever! The whole album is phenomenal, considered to be the first "concept album" in Rock and Roll. The whole album is about a guy going crazy and it all culminates at the end with "Brain Damage/Eclipse". So in the first half of the song when he's singing about the lunatics getting closer and closer until they're in his head, it's as basic as that. It's about a dude going crazy. Of course there's a more complicated background story.

Roger Waters walked around with a tape recorder, and asked the studio employees things like. What did you do at night, you saw the game, "random things" and the doorman asked what the name of the Disco would be, and Roger replied The Dark Side of the Moon, so the doorman quickly replied... There is no dark side of the moon , it's all dark, and Roger liked the response and put it at the end of the album.

When I first heard Dark side of the moon I thought its OK, then I played it 2-3-4-5 time and then I didnt stop for moths, then I heard Wish you were here I thought its OK, then I played it 2-3-4-5 time and then I didnt stop for moths, and that goes for every Pink Floyd album so I got some 5 years of best music experience of my life. Lex is a music genius. Her insight on songs like this with little to no context is amazing. Without the light, either from a source like the sun or the stars, or the inner light of creativity, the moon, and the world around us would be dark. The moon is all dark because it doesn't generate its own light. So even the lit side is in essence still dark. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, in the end all things end the same, as cosmic debris.

This is the song that meets up with Dorothy meeting the Scarecrow. Wizard of Oz matches up with this album.

I still remember the first time I heard this album. A guy I was going to college with dropped a needle on it ad played the whole thing. It’s the only first-time listen album I remember that vividly. That was over forty five years ago.

The moon is tidally locked to the Earth, one side always faces us, the other faces away, into space. We refer to the far side as the " dark side" even though it gets sunlight. During a new moon, when the side facing the Earth is dark, you can still see it faintly lit. That is light from the sun, reflecting off the Earth, hitting the moon and reflecting back to Earth. It's called Earthshine. Pink Floyd gets me thinking about such things.

Brad has to be the only person ever to be asked "What did you get out of a Pink Floyd song?" and respond with, "NOTHING." lol

That's AWESOME and that's why it's the MOST POPULAR album ever but you have to listen to the WHOLE ALBUM.
