Facts about SPANISH TOWN You Probably did not know (History of Spanish Town)
Located approximately 26 km west of Jamaica's capital, and situated along the Rio Cobre River is the oldest continuously occupied city in the Western Hemisphere. This city is known a Spanish town and is Jamaica's national treasure architecturally.
In 1509, five years after been marooned for 347 days on the north-eastern town of Sevilla la Nueva or new seville Christopher Columbus bequeathed Jamaica to his heirs… Today Sevillia la Nueva is better known as St. Ann`s Bay.

I grew up in Spanish Town and lived at 31 King St. My grandmother Enid Wilson was once the Registrar General of the Record Office. My grandfather Leo “Pope” Wilson was the Paymaster General & the Organist at the Cathedral Church. Thanks for the history lesson.

Spanish Town also called Santiago de la vega. Has rich history not only was it a Taino village but became a cattle ranch. The earliest ranching culture in the Americas started there. Vaqueros or cowboys worked that area with long horn cattle and Andalusian horse's. Bullfighting was also a weekend sport in early Spanish Town. The first black catholic priest was there at the church. Spanish music was developed into a creole style there. We are the first cowboys not Mexico or America.

I too was born and grew up in Spanish Town and enjoy the history of my home Town. Left Jamaica 1977 and would love to return, but the new breed of native, not knowing its history, introduced crimes and violence to a once peaceful Town.

@@HummingbirdJa let's not beat around the bush here. Both political parties are responsible for the state of our nation. Every single polititian I know has joined and maintained a monopoly of governance - GARRISON POLITICS, and until every hard working, honest Jamaican stop voting for everyone of these politicians it will never stop. The Constitution allows for citizens to abstain from voting if they do not see a viable candidate. Or you can walk into the voting centers across the island and draw a line through your ballot in a show of protest. The result will be a Voided Election but it will send the true message that we need a new breed of PERFORMANCE POLITITIANS.

it is a shame how this important part of our history has been left to decay and the area is now essentially a ghetto when it could have been an attraction earning money for the country and educating our people. Alex what has happened to the Arawak village that used to be there, also the nearby arawak museum? This area should be cleaned up, traffic diverted and the buildings restored. So sad.

@@HummingbirdJa I am sorry Patricia they don't, in fact they CANNOT. We, a FREE people of JAMAICA is forced to uphold the remnants of our colonial master ENGLAND. The teachers are only "authorized" to teach what the Tertiary Instititions taught them and what the Ministry of Education, Jamaica(ENGLAND) approved for the curriculum. None of our successive government has ever sought to bring about an INDEPENDENT JAMAICA!

Half that story, as I listen, is filled in by non-euro-centric rasta people. I have spent 3 separate portions a time in, Half Way Tree, Irishtown at Strawberry Hill, Sp.colonial manse, and weeks upon Stony Hill, jus below Barrington Levy’s house. One stay in Negril, near Kaiser’s place. No doubt one of the best history lessons, my reggae music partner, coulda ever teach, was complete, today, when I saw Bullocks street, inna Spanishtown, my singa, was ‘Ras’ Jahn Bullock, fr. Boston.. we played roots music, for 35 years, recorded 2 albums, thanks to Bob, Colin Leslie, and Errol Brown.. Loose Caboose🇲🇱!

Oliver Cromwell had no desire for the capture of Jamaica he actually wanted Hispaniola which is today’s Dominican Republic & Haiti . Hispaniola was well defended by the Spanish so Admiral William Penn & Admiral Robert Venables went for the less defended island of Jamaica which they stole from the Spanish !
