I think they will get themselves out, as their weird and contradictional policies are becoming so impactful on the public, that they will opt to at least vote against these regressives. And this nice house we built with government debt could of course collapse at any time, making way for change. Not much we individuals can do to impact this, but its the way it is.
Adolf Critler doubt it. look at other countires. the government is going to take all of our guns. crime will increase at same time as the government closing in on censorship of free speech. one day you are going to wake up in pseudo north korea and wish you could go back in time to change it but you cant.
27:38 Bam. That right there. As a young man in 2020 (just turned 20 yesterday), this is the feeling that has bothered me for my whole childhood, finally summed up into words. I got sent here by my Critical Thinking class expecting some boring 30-minute diatribe, but instead I got the revelation of a lifetime. Great stuff.
I live in England. I spent four years at school studying economics and never once heard this man's name. Now I've discovered him I looked for his books Basic Economics in 4 libraries and couldn't see it. I'm starting to think there's a reason my country is in such a shit way.
"[students] are being taught that they have to have views, but they're not being taught that it's important to know what you're talking about." Thomas, you are an oracle of wisdom.
This man's name had never once been mentioned to me in school or by anybody later in any capacity. I literally had to stumble over his name through my own newborn interests in research AFTER I began to question those in power in our nation. Same goes for Milton Friedman.
It's interesting his last comment was about the fact that he was 81 in the year 2011 when this video was made. It's now 2021, ten years later and Thomas Sowell is still alive and will turn 91 this year. It's also interesting to note that he is still making videos of various social issues at 91 years of age. His mind remains clear and sharp to this day.
Every time I listen to Thomas Sowell I believe there is hope, due to his sharp focus on problems. THEN I remember he is but one strong oak in a forest of dead trees.
"Never underestimate the difficulty of changing false beliefs by facts." Undeniably true. America at this time is a land in which ideology trumps evidence. And this puts the nation and we who live here in grave peril.
+Bam Mam Because When you deal with someone that you cannot reason with you are ultimately left with two choices, you either A) Ignore them and instruct others to do the same because they are irrational and do not respond to the world as it. Or B) You eliminate them from the conversation, by any means necessary because they cannot contribute anything to any discussion because they are living in a world populated by their imagination, not reality. The real problem is what happens when you can no longer pick Option A) because the people in charge ARE the people who do not respond to facts.
"They're being taught that it's important to have views and they're not being taught that it's important to know what you're talking about." - man, I learn so much from this guy.
He is such a gem; a true American intellectual. I dread the day when he leaves us. Our country will lose a great mind as it did when Milton Friedman passed on. But thank you for all your wisdom and knowledge, Mr. Sowell.
I love the titles of Sowell's books. "The Vision of the Anointed." "The Quest for Cosmic Justice." These sarcastic titles sound almost like sci-fi/fantasy books and that lures people in for a hardcore lesson on Reality 101.
One of the most lonely individuals found in America today is an intelligent conservative. Listen with an open mind to Dr. Thomas Sowell & you'll know why.
This interview is utterly amazing. They've distilled some of the biggest questions and answers of our time into a neat, understandable 30min segment.. I was captivated
Calm, clear, scientific, empirical, open, objectively analytical, clearly a towering intellect and all at the same time - what a lovely man. Simple as that.
That's actually a sign of intelligence. To recognise that someone is smarter than you requires intelligence. Stupid people are unable to recognise that someone is smarter than them because of their stupidity. It is called the Dunning Kruger effect.
Thanks Peter. Tom Sowell, a mentor to us all (and I say this at 70 anos), if we're wise enough to listen or lucky enough to hear. Thanks Peter, Hoover and Tom. Much appreciated.
They are not prophetic. They are self fulfilling prophosies. You cant underfund and gut programs and then claim those programs were doomed to fail. You doomed them to fail when you sent billions over seas to make corparations more attractive to foreign governments, while you sucked the lifeblood out of the middle class and underclass of your own country. Ignorant people continue to fall for the same stupid tricks. The lie that they are the arbitors of their own fortune in a nation of people looking out for themselves. How many inovations have been shelved because it was cheaper in the short term to stay with the inneficient program already paid for? How many technologies have been stiffled to protect the profit margins of out dated and obsolete companies. How many trillions go out the door to unprofitabke companies while programs that would do more and cost a fraction are under funded and demonized. How many fortune 500 companies are on the government tit while the people paying into that system are struggling to survive.
I am Indian and read the book, even as Indian my biggest take on the book is that when seeking the truth we need to get to the bottom of it. Easy to read and learn few facts here and there
This was an incredible interview. It's funny how when you're growing up you're led to believe liberalism is the 'alternative' when in reality it's the other way around. Liberalism only maintains the power structure as it is & further harms the lesser off. & his assessment on race is really eye opening.
Watching this in 2023, I'm on a marathon of this series of interviews, OMG, his words are full of wisdom & still so relative to the messy events in USA & EU today... He makes me see the big picture much more clear, thank you Sir! Also, I bought the ebook Basic Economics, very good read, highly recommended.
Thomas Sowell is brilliant! Speaks very clearly and makes logical comprehensible arguments supported by clear facts, not the confused nonsense that so call intellectuals are producing today.. Nothing but respect and admiration for Mr Sowell.
"They're taught to have views but they are not taught to know what they're talking about." That gave me a good laugh, it's so accurate when you look around and see. Love his humor btw. Such a great man.
Can’t get enough of Sowell I used to think I needed to know all the knowledge in the history of humanity, but now I will be happy to simply absorb all the knowledge that Thomas Sowell has.
Thomas Sowell is indeed a national treasure. I dread the day when his time on this Earth is finished. Some of the best wisdom imparted by Tom Sowell on how to be successful that would serve students well: "Equip yourself with skills people are willing to pay for."
It is indeed a rare find, a man who understands how to acquire facts and organize them to enlighten one no matter where such knowledge may lead. No one does this better than Thomas Sowell. He does it sowell.
Dude I feel like an uneducated moron when I listen to this genius speak. His ability to read studies and elaborate on them and organize them to press forward an argument are incredible.
Amazing man and a great intellectual mind. His writing should be taught everywhere. His point towards the end of this video that children (but also adults) are being taught to express their feelings rather then look at facts and to listen to opposing opinions is exactly right. That is why this country is failing.
The education system is largely run by the left, it may be intentional, it may be unconscious, but they leave important stuff out sometimes if it runs counter to the democrat narrative.
Why I left the left is they put an inordinate amount of focus on the worst parts of history and seem keen to divide Americans into thinking of themselves primarily on ethnic rather than national lines. The media does it too, black guys aren't being shot at a higher rate than before, and in fact, before all the news coverage this rate had been going down for decades... now it's up, I think not because there is an increase, but due to an increased perception that the police are out to get them, this in turn causes them to be more nervous around cops, which the officers perceive and in turn become more nervous themselves.... but thinking beyond two steps is too hard for most it seems...
Thomas Sowell, a national treasure. I've learned so much real history from him. My two favorite subjects in school, besides art, was history and economics, so I get so much of what he's saying. ❤❤❤❤
it's a shame our children in grade schools aren't introduced to this man and many great thinkers like him....it's all about truth and facts not hoping and wishing....God bless you Mr. Sowell.....
A Hoover Institution video with comments enabled! Thank you HI, I really appreciate all these videos, the Peter Robinson stuff, the old episodes of Firing Line, they're all fantastic. This channel has been instrumental in my transition from avowed Marxist to a fiscally conservative, socially liberal Libertarian/Classical-Liberal. I also really love Thomas Sowell, I find him really quite relatable, and I think he's a better communicator than he gives himself credit for, especially in his books. Excellent interview, one gets the impression Peter, and Thomas are friends, and I really envy Peter that.
That was a good read and a nice highlight of some of the examples from the book. Sowell is totally right about teachers in public schools getting kids that are barely 10 to take political sides. I am so glad he continues to write on many occasions.
I have supreme respect for Mr. Sowell. He is one of the handful intellectuals who speak with facts and figures to make an argument. We as society are really running out of people like him and that worries me.
There is such a thing as absolute truth. The search for that truth can take a lifetime or generations. Along the way, there will be layers discovered and revelations which embellish a truth on its way to becoming absolute. The people we all should want to know are pursuing that truth. Thomas Sowell is one of those people. Truth seeking can be difficult especially when it causes division. The only time such division occurs is when entities exhibit different agendas. If one is seeking truth and the other is justifying an agenda, there will be conflict. Thus, we witness the current conflict in America and around the world. If absolute truth is the objective, a conversation without screaming or bull horns or bricks thrown or businesses set ablaze or police/people assaulted and destruction of property would not be taking place. Let's search for truth shall we?
