Beluga death rates are higher in captivity than they are in the wild. While belugas live up to 60 years in the wild, in captivity they very often die before the age of 30 and sometimes much earlier.

I pray the world can respect these mammals and not kill them for an old tradition, as this happens in foreign countries like Taiji, Japan, unfortunately in a brutal way. These are intelligent mammals that deserve respect and love.

If I must explain. The tradition of hunting these animals are done respectfully. 1. Sustainability because in the arctic we need food to survive the extreme cold winters which lasts 8/9 months. 2. They should not be brought anywhere then where they already are. Putting them in aquariums just puts them in captivity. Bascially animal prison. 3. A tradition of hunting them isn't old if it's still being practised today. We only take what is needed and the rest we leave to ensure population doesn't go endangered or extinct.

Actually, Beluga whales do not mind swimming in these containments since they gett attention and they are treated well. The sound it makes is a sound of delight and they use this in aquariums and this is a sign to say that it’s happy. They are very friendly animals, like dolphins or seals. It is different with Killer Whales since they like the open ocean and they live in rather small containments and they like hunting.

@@tonigrosso7544 It's sad though because it isn't actively hunting fish, it's relying on people feeding it. And it's not with other Belugas, so it's not really sustainable situation over time. Also lots of random tourists keep bothering the animal at all times, plus it seems to be irritating the commercial fisheries in that area so it might be in danger...

Those tanks don't look like tourist attractions to me, probably holding tanks for marine biologists. That said as much as I hate and detest tourist shit. They contribute to the effort to protect our endangered marine mammals

sylvie you are absolutely right about how horrible human impact has been for the beluga whale, and for countless other species as well. however, regardless of what this video might suggest, CEO driven mass pollution and subsequent climate change has been a far greater threat to their populations than fringe hunting. the arctic has a massive supply of resources including oil that some people believe they have the right to tear from the earth. on the other hand, indigenous people living in the far reaches of the planet who have been entirely shafted by their u.s and canadian governments *literally require* hunting in order to feed themselves and their families. if you have doubt in your mind you can look up "alaskan grocery store prices" and see for yourself. it is absolutely true that hunting does not help beluga whale populations, but there are a few people who deserve to be pointed out more than the marginalized communities people already fuck with enough
