Faded Glory, The Von Erich Story is a documentary that was created, produced, and directed by Rusty Baker while attending Radio/Television/Film school at the University of North Texas in 1999. The documentary contains original video from Von Erich, The Legend Lives On, which produced during a documentary workshop case at UNT in 1997. Once Fritz Von Erich died, Rusty Baker and Kevin Von Erich agreed to make Faded Glory as a tribute to Fritz and his legacy. The video also contains many of the Von Erich family's personal home movies and wrestling footage, which was all used with permission of Kevin Von Erich. Original wrestling commentator Bill Mercer, who also taught at UNT's RTVF Department, agreed to serve as the video's narrator.
The documentary was shown at the 1999 Dallas Video Festival, USA Film Festival, and Fort Worth Film Festival. Kevin and Rusty would appear at each festival and answer questions from the audience. Faded Glory aired multiple times on Dallas/Fort Worth's PBS station KERA, garnering some of the station's best ratings in decades. It was also the first feature-length documentary to be featured on Mark Cuban's Broadcast.com.
Nearly 15 years after this documentary was made, Kevin Von Erich would sell the entire World Class Championship Wrestling video library, including all Von Erich family wrestling footage, to World Wresting Entertainment, Inc. With WWE controlling all Von Erich footage, the copyright-protected documentary was somehow still banned from being shown. This ban is also enforced on RU-vid, although numerous people had already posted the documentary without the consent of the filmmaker, Rusty Baker. He is currently disputing the ban and is attempting to repost the now 24-year-old student project to RU-vid.
UPDATE: All original footage of the interviews are available for an updated version. Please show your support for any and all edits by commenting below.

It's shit like banning content even from projects that pre-date their purchasing of World Class' video library that makes many people hate WWE. Vince McMahon really does think he owns the entire wrestling world & apparently that ego continues in that company even after his departure. Even with the in ring b-roll removed this is still a fantastic watch to anyone who loved the Von Erichs back in the day despite the WWE attempted sabotage. Thank you for posting

It was sold my guy. When it was purchased, they knew the stipulations. It's unfortunate, but that's business. Selling it in the first place was regrettable, but I'm guessing the money was an opportunity to start over, & allow him to focus on his family.

@@PickingUpthePiecesofUs not quite, but I am about to! The Von Erichs had equal mainstream attraction potential as Hogan, but they appealed to teenager girls and women, not so much to kids as Hogan, but even that is debatable: both of us were kids in 83- 84 and I was way more invested in the Von Erichs than in Hogan!! You want to know something really unique? I am from Bogotá, Colombia, lived here then and got to see all of this! Not on a weekly basis, but on somewhat of a regular one! My Dad was the CEO of a huge American corporation, so he traveled a lot to the States all year round and brought me the tapes!! That’s how transcendent the Von Erichs were!

I swear Flair is one of the luckiest men alive. Does he go onto the career he has if David doesn't pass, or even if Magnum doesn't have his accident?? So many what if's if David doesn't pass. How much bigger does World Class get??? Does Fritz take over the NWA instead of Crockett??? I like to think there's an alternate reality somewhere where none of the boys pass and all those questions are answered.
@maturanita
@maturanita 11 месяцев назад
@that’s the key point mate. David as NWA champion would have given Fritz even more clout within the NWA, and that’s when things get interesting. Can you imagine Fritz taking control and not Jim Crockett Jr.? Or both reaching an agreement and working in cahoots? Oh boy, one could salivate just by imagining the possibilities. That’s how good DVE was

I was just starting my Freshman year in high school. I never played football, track, lift weights, or wrestle until I saw Kerry working out on the first WCCW tv opening credits. I would watch that show every Saturday morning because I lived in Arizona, and it was taped delayed until the next day. I lost my baby fat, and gain mass muscle, and learned how to play all the sports because I wanted to be like the Von Erich's. I even learn how to use the iron claw. I could crush oranges to bending iron rods. I went to a show they were doing in Oklahoma, and I was hoping to meet Kerry, but he had been an accident. I asked some of the other wrestlers what happen, and if Kerry was alright. I won't name the wrestler who told me Kerry lost his foot. I just graduated high school, and was thinking to try pro-wrestling. After I talk to a couple of well-known wrestlers at that show they gave me the best advise to not try out. I still love the old school wrestling videos, but hate the new stuff of today. I never met any of them the Von Ericks, but they were apart of my life, and I can't thank them enough for doing what they did in wrestling. If Kevin sees this, Thank you, sir. Also, thank you, Picking Up the Pieces of Us for this video. I hope the video stays up(RU-vid, WWF, WWE!).

One of my favorite memories of my dad, and one of the very few things he took me to see, was a trip to the Sportatorium! I got to see Kevin wrestle Buddy Roberts… and the R&R Express v the Midnight Express!! If you were a Texan back then… a trip to the Sportatorium was one of the “musts”. The other memory with my dad, (the only other thing he took me to witness) was a Cowboys/Redskins game. Don’t get me wrong, he wasn’t a “bad” dad… just always working. THANK YOU DAD!! Thanks for sharing this. The latest narrative is for everyone to crap on Fritz and blame him for all that happened with his sons. It's nice to see these scenes where it is obvious of Fritz's love for his boys. Did he do everything right? Of course not. However, all of the blame does not land on his shoulders. I put a lot of the blame on the wrestling business itself, especially 80s wrestling. The victims of that era spread far beyond the Von Erichs. Each of those boys saw their older brother become a "superhero" in Texas and they all "needed" to follow in those footsteps. Whether they really wanted to or felt like they had to, they knew that they needed to follow. How was anyone going to realistically deny them of that opportunity? Combine that with the lack of awareness of male mental health issues, especially in that era, and it was a recipe for disaster. Hell, Fritz desperately needed counseling after Jackie's terrible tragedy and I guarantee he got no help there. The mental anguish this family went through is immeasurable, and I have much admiration of Kevin for staying strong and raising his own children.

I didn’t realize that I only had one shot to get it published on RU-vid. I held the copyright to everything within the video in 1999, but the Von Eric family sold their rights nearly a decade later. Now, RU-vid is siding with the current license holder, which Makes it impossible for me to make a dime off this. That’s OK, it was never my intent to make money.

Hard to explain. I had the copyright from my documentary in 1999, which included all the wrestling footage. They bought the wrestling footage from Von Erich family a few years later. Now, that I’m trying to put it on RU-vid, they are saying that they on the footage, but I had access to it in 1999, and eventually prevailed in letting you guys see it. My documentary, Faded Glory, was done with the Von Erich family’s consent in 1999. Later, the wrestling footage was purchased by the WWE. They initially tried to keep me from posting my documentary on RU-vid, but my 1999 copyright prevailed! But then they said it I couldn’t release it in dozens of foreign countries. I guess wrestling is considered violent there? And finally, one of the songs we used was flagged for copyright. So, that’s why there’s a 4 minute audio dip in the video. Regardless, I’m not allowed to make money on my documentary, but I’d rather you see it then just let the tapes sit in my attic.

I'm not trying to be ugly and the truth never really is. The wrestlers knew it but don't dare say it well a few like Dutch Mantel have. The truth is that something was bad wrong with all these boys including the one that survives to this day. They were all slow in many mental ways that their parents instead of covering up for should have gotten help for. The Dad was never really right in the head either. The combo of the mom and dad produced moronic in different ways boys that all were slow and suffered defects. The wrestlers talk to this day amongst themselves about this very fact. The truth should be openly discussed. One look alone at any one of those boys and it could easily be seen and when they talked it could easily be heard.
