FAHS Feilding High School 1st XV vs Whanganui Collegiate School 1st XV
Feilding High School, Feilding.
Last round robin match for 2023 was at School and we put on 5 matches in front of our Sponsors with the 1st XV clash against WCS bringing over large numbers of Whanganui Supporters. Final round matches had 6 teams in the CNI all still vying for final placings in the Top 4. Unheralded.
Match got off to a blistering pace with two converted tries within the first 10 minutes to Jack Delaney. The match settled down and WCS under their new coach have introduced a new style of play which they brought to the match. Our defence was strong throughout the half, but a yellow card opened a chink in the defensive armour and WCS scored two quality converted tries to level the score up to 14-all at the half. Both teams showing all spectators’ good skills of running rugby.
Calmness at halftime in outlining what our requirements were for the second half. We scored relatively early with a try to Mosese Bason in the first 10 minutes after a good time with the ball to take the score out to 21-14. Dan Maisiri after having a huge break out down his wing and just being bundled into touch, managed to score with 15 minutes to go under the posts with a sharp run. 28-14 and looking good. However, WCS are a side that won’t go away and to their credit they came back strong. During those last frantic 10 minutes, we let ourselves down with discipline, were heavily penalised and had 3 men yellow carded during which time WCS picked up a penalty try and with the last play only having 12 on the field, we couldn’t shut down their attack down the left flank and WCS scored to draw the game. We will have to do better.
The end of the match saw both sides asking what the result meant - well the sideline informed that FDMC had tipped over Wesley College - so the draw with a 4 try bonus point would mean that the teams finished 2nd and 3rd on the CNI table and would be playing against each other next week in Whanganui. A better prospect than heading north to face either Wesley or St Johns.
So, we will be hosted on Saturday at Whanganui to play in Semi Final Two of the 2023 CNI Competition with the match to kick off at 12 noon.
