FAIL! Fender Jazzmaster Locking Tremolo - Setup & Test

Myth buster! How good is the locking tremolo on a Fender Jazzmaster? This is how you set up the tremolo on a Jazzmaster or Jaguar, to provide the best change of keeping the guitar in tune. But what if you detune the E to a D, or break a string - does it do its' job? I will illustrate how to set up the tremolo correctly to take advantage of the locking mechanism, and provide real-world scenario evidence of what happens when you need that locking mechanism most.
I'm using a Fender Jazzmaster Custom Deluxe, to demonstrate this!

Only video which clearly explains how to set it up. Thankyou

Thank you SO MUCH for producing this video. I tried everything to set up my Jazzmaster trem-lock and failed at every turn. I was about to return it to the store or see a luthier --until you and your video came along. You've made (at least) one person very, very happy! Keep up the great work. 😊

Thank you for the kind feedback! I’m happy that I was able to help you get the trem-lock balanced. Yes, even if just one person benefited from my video, I’m happy 🤣

I love how well you explain and demonstrate this. Your side by side comparison is very effective in showing the difference. Thanks!

@@KersyMusic yes sir! I look at other videos and read up on it and I’m confused. This is my first JM

Thank you for this video. I am a new to using the Jazzmaster and the trem has been a nightmare for me to set up and use.

Thanks. They are great guitars, once you get them set up well. The trem is actually quite smooth compared to the more modern versions. Enjoy!!

What do you mean by “get the button to engage while in the locked position”? How is the button “engaging” while locked?
@KersyMusic
@KersyMusic Год назад
Pushing the button towards the bridge is putting it into the locked position. Getting it to ‘engage’ means that the button will feel a little stiff or stuck, while in the locked position. This is the result of friction from the adjustment screw. You want the lock button to feel just a little tight when locking it. If it is loose/sloppy, then it is not adjusted correctly

Interesting! There is something I don't understand. When the trem-lock is engaged, it blocks one direction of tremolo movement, right?
@KersyMusic
@KersyMusic 6 месяцев назад
The trem-lock prevent the tremolo bar lifting, as it would if a string broke or you try to pull up. However, even with fine adjust of the setting of the lock, there is always a small amount of change in tension possible. It is better to set it as best as possible, and use the lock, if you are using vibrato or diving down… it comes back up to the ‘right’ spot to stay in tune.

Alright I understand. I saw a Jazzmaster which I really like but this trem-lock thing has me wondering a little, it doesn't seem that complicated but I'm not the most patient man in the world. I don't plan to play some Slayer with it and think I'm Kerry King, but I plan to use the tremolo sometimes.@@KersyMusic

It’s one of my favorite guitars… I was surprised how much I like playing it over my strat and Les Paul.
@indigoblondes

Well… the D string is the string with the highest pull force on the neck. With the lock engaged, you’ve got metal on metal, nothing that gives. The remaining detune is due to a slightly straightened neck after the string break. The neck-straightened-induced sharpening of the notes is less severe with virtually any other string that breaks. Actually, I’ve never had a broken D string in all the years that I‘d been playing guitar. It’s the the high e or the B string 95% of the time and they exert merely half the force on the neck in comparison to the D string. If one of those breaks, the tuning is still passable with the trem lock engaged. I don’t see any "FAIL!" (as the title suggests) with the design of the vibrato unit here.

I typically break the G, B and E strings. I have never broken a D either. I cut the G string in the video. The fail for me is because the strings did not all stay at the correct pitch after breaking a G-string, which is how the locking tremolo was marketed. Like you said, there is a change in tension in the neck, which can’t be reasonable compensated for. All of the strings ended up a little sharp… not ok if you are playing with others.

@@KersyMusic , you are cutting the D in the video, it is clearly visible and you even say it :)

Perhaps you should watch the video again. You very clearly cut the D string, and even said so at the 3min mark. In my experience using a Jazzmaster I was surprised at how well the tremolo lock held pitch tuning when breaking E and B strings. Not perfect, but pretty darn close.

Proper way to set it up is to have the screw tight just enough to not allow the vibrato arm to pull up. That's it. Your method doesn't work at all as you can clearly see
