The horse I ride does this, it can be annoying, especially is they are too tall for you to just not use a mounting block. I have found that my horse usually stands for about 2-3 seconds before walking off so I have just trained myself to put my foot in the stirrup really quick and pull myself up while they are walking 😅
That can be extremely dangerous, if you can definitely train them to stand still but if your not able to train them or don't feel comfortable than ask someone who knows more to help It's a bad habit that can cause/lead to many problems.❤
Yep, definitely something you want to address as soon as possible. I was recently watching a video where a trainer was asked for help with a horse who walked off while being mounted. One time that it happened he ended up surging forward and broke the rider’s knee. She needed surgery to have pins put in. This is not meant to scare but to educate and warn people. It can seem merely inconvenient but it can cause a host of issues and injuries. I’ve found that the best way to address it is: When the horse starts walking forward, immediately walk them in a circle and back to the spot they were standing. Rinse and repeat. It will most likely take quite a bit of time (especially when it’s an established habit that they’ve had for a while) but it’s better than allowing it to continue and risk you and the horse’s safety. That can be dangerous and letting your mount know that he can do what he wants when he wants. Try having a pkt of polos with you and put a few on the floor and mount when he is searching and eating them. Make him stand and pat and praise him afterwards. Give him time and it will work. Hi, a little tip for you! If your horse does this then instead of coming of the mounting block, pull on the reins and stop the horse. It shows them that they can’t do this as it is bad behaviour. Cute horse btw!
You should not pull on the reins like this, instead go with the horse but show that you dont want this (either by trying to tell the horse, or by lifting the Left foot up and lowering it doing some sort of stomping, it is the way to say Stop it in the Body Language for Horses, those are the 2 non-cruel ways i got in my head right now). Its not helping if you let the horse go Forward until the distance between the bridle and your hand cant get any further without pulling on the reins, it just will not help.
i ride western and my coach doesn’t let us use mounting blocks, the lesson horse i use often does this once he sees me trying to get on😭i always pretend im still tightening his front cinch (you have to once u enter the arena before u ride) then hop on rlly fast so he can’t move, works like a charm!😛
My trainer would make sure we knew to just stick our foot in the stirrup and hop on😂 if you keep getting off the mounting block and circling sound they just get fed up and trained to do it lol. She’s just be like “Jump on! Jump!”😂
This is too relatable when I try and mount in lessons but I ride western style as soon as I put my foot in the stirrup and my other foot is off the ground the horse will like start walking while I’m still trying to mount 😭😭
Bro fr, the horse I ride always moves as soon as I step on the block and then while still holding the reins I have to just off before he walks too far (he walks fast) and then I move the block over again and repeat the same loop a couple times 😂
The horse I ride used to do this to me, if you notice a pattern, wait till you’re on the block to collect the reins so you can reach and hold them at a halt and when you get on stand there until you ask to walk, if they walk on their own halt until you are ready cause this will get sooooo annoying
I don’t know if you care to listen to me or are taking “advice”but what I did with my horse when she did the was I held the reins tight enough so when I stood up on the mounting block she couldn’t move forward anymore and if she did I would step down and back her up,then once I was on I would let them walk forward first and then I would halt them and make her back up, or just circle around and wait at the mounting block until I let her move forward.She is way better with it know and now waits for a squeeze for her to continue!❤
a tip is instead of mounting by putting ur left and right hand on the saddle, put the left hand on reins and right hand at the top of the saddle so u can pull on the reins if they walk away!😊
Надо учиться сразу залезать с помощью стремени. На шагу его уже фиксировать. Я так на жеребце как-то руку набила, так потом сидя на любой, практически, лошади могла либо опустить, либо подтянуть стремена. Да и залезать проще, чем через эти табуретки. Меня пытались ещё научить на голую спину заразить, но я не на столько горела подобным, хотя раз 5 каталась. И несколько раз щалазила даже сама
My horse will just stand there (usually) especially once you get on 😂 To note: they should always stand, if they don’t, you have a chance of getting dragged… teach your horses to stand and wait people
Think about it, horses are not pre-trained. You have Colts Phillies even green etc. Also if the rider gives can give off emotion/attitude which can trigger fear/spook (running instance). There are many possible reasons, so when training them most of the time you will have to find the root of the habit. Yes you can get dragged or hurt which I definitely 100% agree with.
@@Ellyottttt Ty, you look like a pretty good rider yourself. But also, as a trained horse, your horse should always stand. It’s one thing if you’re still training the horse/the horse is new to you. All horses should eventually stand when being mounted. That is basic training and one of the first things you teach them. So i agree with that part.
Tbh we have a outdoor tacking room and we don’t have a mounting block but the horses I ride are good so I have the reins on the floor and get on them with a chair 😂
Yeah, but sometimes the horse is too tall to mount without a block, like my percheron I use the paddock fence to get on because he's a little below 18 hands😅
Once I tried mounting and my foot slid from the stirrup. I was thinking I must’ve lost my footing or something so I tried again and it happened again. It turns out the stirrup was broken 🤣
This is one of the worst habits a horse can have… if your horse doesn’t know basic groundwork and patience in my opinion it shouldn’t be ridden. Please train your horses people-

Ryan Rose has a YT video “teaching the me up at the mounting block”. It’s only about eight minutes but, if you apply what he does in the video you can teach your horse to stand still at the mounting block ❤
I would recommend not grabbing onto the reins but you can do it if you want but if you grab the reins When mounting it can give mixed up controls and make the horse go forward or backward
I can’t tell if you did, but make sure to slide your hand down the reins so it’s touching or almost touching halfway up the mane, and make the buckle face you, this has more control of the horse this will give you more time to fully mount your horse 🐎. ❤❤❤
My horse always starts walking off when I try to get on her without a mounting block.But she stays very still when I try to get on her with the mounting block.I think someone trained her well in that area
Teach her not to, have someone hold her while you mount… if she moves her butt away, mount next to the fence… as controversial as it is, she isn’t having anxiety or being nervous if it continues to happen and there is no reason for it to be traumatic or painful, then there is likely a sense of she just doesn’t want to listen and would rather be out grazing. Now as much as everyone would love if people would just put our horses in the pasture, it’s highly unhealthy, especially at the older ages. Horses in the wild only survive until 15-16 because they don’t get regular exercise, supplements, veterinary care, ect. to keep them in good health. I would ask your trainer or instructor first, but i had to do this with a green horse of mine that just didn’t want to be mounted. 12 and super sassy, just wanted to go back out to the pasture and just graze like she had been doing her whole life. I swear if i get attacked for this 🥲
No literally because tell me why it takes me five minutes to actually get onto my horse. He’s an EX race horse and he cannot stand still for a moment, then when I get on him and i have to walk him in circles cause he can’t slow himself LOL
try not to hold one rein tight but the other rein is lose that might be the reason why your horse walked off trust me it’s happened to me 1 million times lol
