I'm an old boy tat has always promised me sen that I would learn a few tunes on guitar. I'm pretty much obsessed now, although I'm never gonna be a Joe Bonamassa! 🤣🌹
Hang on Francisca, it,s hard at the beginning just learning the basic chords, but once your muscle memory builds up, you will see huge improvement, and , from there, a huge amount of music is waiting there for you. just get a good guitar, something like a Seagull S6 or alike, or any brand you feel confortable with.
Holy hell man this level of crystal clear in depth explanation and with alternative cameras and even pictures edited in to help....ALL FOR FREE? You're literally the greatest TEACHER independent of any topic I've ever seen.
Justin: when I was 20, I reached the point where clearly the next step was to learn barre chords, and I just couldn't do it. Over the years I've come back to trying again periodically, but I just couldn't get it. Now I'm 60. I've been trying to learn barre chords on and off for months. A few days ago I watched this video, and it finally told me what I was doing wrong and what I need to know. Now I'm making steady progress. If I just keep practicing, I oughta be pretty good in a year! It's astonishing how nobody told me what I needed to know before, despite all my efforts. Thanks Justin!
Omg I've been battling bar chords for over two decades, but only NOW am I seeing how bad it is to bend my wrist so much! Thanks Justin for once again giving me a real AH-HA moment in my guitar journey!
So grateful to be born in an age where the internet exists and high quality educational content like this exists for free ! I will definitly make a small donation once I am finished with Grade 1 of your free guitar course.
Another 60 something here Justin. Just to say that your detailed instruction goes above and beyond what we should be given for free. Your delivery is not condescending in any way, or judgemental, towards us mere beginners. We know there’s a long road ahead, but with your dedication to every one of us, we shall overcome - WE WILL BE GUITARISTS! Thank you so very much. Respect to you Justin.
Late 50's, bought am electric guitar last November. Your instruction & courses are awe-inspiring. Really friendly, personable teaching...thanks so much🙏🏻
A great explanation on hand/finger positioning for barre chords. You are a good teacher and a patient sort of guy to go to those lengths. Thank you very much Justin.
Holy cow, this was already head and shoulders above the other videos I've watched, and then you threw in Columbo! ☺️❤ Perfect. Thank you so much. I'm trying guitar again after 35 years off, and I have some questionable habits to undo. This level of detail really helps.
Best barre chord lesson out there. No question. It is all in the little details. I'm an older learner (late 40's) and this is the first time I have seen the mechanics explained in such detail that I could troubleshoot my problems and resolve them. Thank you my friend.
Thank you very much Justin. You give so many helpful tips to ease my struggling with barre chords. Like trying to learn driving with a manual transmission. Getting down the action with the accelerator and easing out the clutch at the same time. Getting that action fixed in your mind first is most necessary before you even begin to actually drive (steering, braking, and watching the road, and your destination). Trying to learn barre chords too quickly has never worked for me. I almost gave up in frustration. Your instruction guides each step, one by one. Practicing just one step at a time for several days it begins to miraculously sound better. I so much appreciate your guidance in teaching. I never realized how much there was to learn on the guitar. I've been playing 5 string banjo for a few years but the guitar is a whole different animal. I watch and listen and practice on each video several times. Each time I find more tips I missed the first and second time. You are an amazing guitarist and guitar guru (instructor). I so much appreciate the time and effort you've given to all of us who struggle with learning the basics. Again, Thank you for your patience, time, and the gift of learning well.
The best guitar teacher ever. Believe me, I watched a lot of videos about barre chords practicing. This one is the best so far. It helped me tremendously.
Thankyou Justin! 25 years ago i was a mediocre player when I sold my Ovation Custom Balladeer and Steinberger bass to support my church. Now that I have been blessed to replace both, I am getting so much better than I ever was in less than 1 month. You and 2 others on RU-vid have been making it so easy to get back my muscle memory and greatly improve my technique.
As someone who is still trying to learn F, I find the information in this is invaluable. So many more tips about finger placement, wrist angles, how to roll the barre properly etc. that I really needed to bring into my F chord practice. Thanks for this video! I'm going right back to my (dreaded) F chord to apply some of these tips!
I struggled with barre chords in the early days also. A great tip I received was to use a capo on (say) 3rd fret and play the chords as you would with no capo…there is less tension on the strings with a capo so they are easier to push down. Try the F chord with a capo on 3rd or 5th fret, it will be easier and will keep you motivated to keep trying.
@12:26 is a huge obstacle that I noticed people often overlook! So glad you mentioned this! Gotta keep the back of the finger from sliding no matter how badly it wants to. We don’t put a capo on crooked, it’s supposed to be parallel to the fret so same goes for keeping the barred finger parallel. Thanks Justin for all the time and helpful explanations you put into your videos!
I have to echo all the comments I’ve been reading. I started practicing guitar about two years ago, and your lessons have been “instrumental” in my progress. THANK YOU! Also, I have that same shirt your wearing in the video 😄
Agreed! I've been trying to learn guitar on-and-off for years and never had my guitar set-up. Just had that done for the first time because of an intonation issue with the B string - and WHAT A DIFFERENCE!! :D
Thank you for this guidance Justin. As a real life mechanic I struggle with carpel tunnel in both wrist and this video has really helped me to play bar chords with less pain. I commend you Sir for what you do for all those that are chasing a dream of becoming a better guitarist.
Thank you so much for this lesson Justin!!! 59 years old and just finishing up your beginners course so trying to learn barre chords. This is by far the best explanation out there for barre chords. I enjoy all your videos. You are the master at guitar teaching 👏👏👏😍
I've learnt all the basic chords from you Justin. Today I just decided to learn some barre chords. Thank God that you released this video now! Gonna learn so much from you. Thank you for all your efforts
Justinguitar, I've been trying the F barre chord for 3 weeks now. At first the pain my index finger was OUCH!!! But now it is easing and I can get sounds out of all strings 8 out of 10 times. The other 2 times are a muted G string with the middle finger. I could never have achieved it without you RU-vid vids. Thank you.
Hey buddy, it's been almost an year playing guitar. Have been struggling with Barr chords since the past 6 months. Few of the very small techniques you told really worked for me and helped me improve these dreaded yet beautiful chords. Really appreciate your work 👍
Thank you Justin for great insight. I have been practicing E shape barre chord with my favorite song for over a month and I am still not quite there yet. This chord is a tricky one. But this video is instant help. Justin have wonderful style of teaching.
Justin, your teaching style is ideal, especially for a 59 yr old, like me. I played a bit in high school and moved on. Back at it thanks to your course. These barre chords are tough...I told someone they should dig the guy up who invented them so he could be jailed...😁 I've kinda worked around them, but I'm gonna hammer away until they are second nature. This tutorial is excellent!
The fact that you clarified that the first finger is only pressing on the specific strings was so helpful. I was never able to figure that out until now and it makes barre chords seem way less threatening

Great lesson on barre chords. The advice about the risk of carpel tunnel problems is so important. As a late starter playing guitar ( started at 62) I developed quite a serious problem with my thumb and wrist down to bad positioning. It took me 12 months to recover. Had I seen your video before trying barre chords I could have avoided the problem. Fantastic teaching skills. Your videos enable people like me,with no background of playing music, to develop skills we once thought unachievable.
Brilliant video Justin, I've been playing for 3 years now and have avoided Barre chords like the plague, after watching this video and following your advice I feel like i'm making real progress...thank you so much.
My god, Justin, this is the best guitar lesson I've ever had, on RU-vid or in person. The fact you're giving away this gold for free is mind boggling, and this lesson proves why we should all be donating if anyone was on the fence. You're a true asset to the guitar community.
Justin, your video rescued my wrist ... this was my major mistake since years. I would rename that video in "how to play healthy barre chords". Many many thanks!!
Justin , Im very grateful , i remember , back in 2006 or 2007 that you posted a video , it was a finger style arrangemente from the song Yesterday , and also , it was my first finger style song , then ive learned some other songs in that kind of style , but the thing is that you are a great teacher , your smile and charisma , reflects that you were born to be a great musician and also a great teacher , God bless your life man and all the respect and good vibes from Lima Peru
Best lesson ever!!! 💚 I've been struggling with this a lot because with my tiny hands the second string is right under the "arch" of the index finger when I bend it. But now I'm confident that there's some way around it, after all, there are children who can play the guitar.
Thank you for this Justin. This is by far the most comprehensive lesson on the mechanics of barre chords including aspects of physiology and psychology with the instrument. Thank you so much for this and all your lessons and songs. You're an amazing human to share your knowledge on this channel. Much appreciated! ❤
A 64 year old here! I've always cheated and hooked my thumb over to play the 6th string but thought it was about time to get this barre chord thing down so I can teach my daughter properly. Struggling on my own resulted in a painful experience and a constantly muted B string. Within 10 minutes of practice after watching this video, I had every note ringing clearly and the pain reduced considerably. I know that with daily practice, going through a mental checklist and reviewing the mechanics laid out here and building up strength, this is going to get easier and easier! They say practice makes perfect, but if you don't have the mechanics correct, you are just practicing and embedding the bad habits. This was a really useful video and I will pass it on to anyone interested in this topic!
What a beautiful discovery, happening upon your channel. In addition to the excellent instruction, what I like especially is that it’s a real, full lesson. Unlike many RU-vid guitar instructors, you don’t offer teaser, and say sign up for the real thing. And you don’t make a pitch for other services. No wonder you have over a million subscribers! (Including me). THANKS!
Nice job justinguitar, I see you re-filming your video lesson, the quality of the videos is mind-blowing. I'm going to commit more time to practice now than ever. regular cumulative 2hours everyday practice, I will start from the beginner course because I notice you added new video lesson to the beginner course, just to be sure not to miss any of your tricks and tips. thanks for being a great teacher.
Justin, congrats on 1,000,000 subscribers!!! Just wanted to say thanks for all your videos. I’m 55 and still playing and learning for the last 15 years. Having problems learning covers, so I learn new chords and make my own music. Your awesome bro. 🙏🏽
@@justinguitar I sure will. I usually pick up my guitar at least 2 hours a day. 15 minutes here, 30 minutes there ect. I honestly couldn’t live without it. Justin would it be possible to do some Zeppelin, Tesla, Black Crowes and of course more Beatle acoustic lessons? I really get a lot out of your lessons. I can really tell that you love what you do. Keep up the good work!!!✌️🙏🏽👍
@@traceylindsey5361I’m impressed. 2hrs per day is awesome. I’m 55 also and everyday continues to be a learning day on guitar. RE: Zeppelin, try A Whole Lotta Love…can be done with 2 simple open chords (excluding the crazy-assed solo part in the original!)
When I was in Noosa, recovering from a Fraser Island off road bus trip, they reckoned I sounded more like an Australian than they do. What I'm saying is, you sound more like an Englishman than we do here in England. Strange old world I'm an Englishman raised in Canada. After less than six months of your tuition I'm playing the guitar at age 67. Thank you Justin. 😁
Thank you so much for this invaluable lesson, Justin. I’ve always struggled with barre chords and have stopped even trying. I’ll persevere now and work on all that you’ve suggested. You’re a great teacher!

This video was particularly helpful, as barre chords and I did not start out as friends. Thank you! And thank you for being so generous with your time, talent and experience. God knows how many people you have inspired and taught to play guitar! You are greatly appreciated.
thanks justin i think i have learned more on your videos than my actual guitar teacher he always asks me where did you learn that from i just say my mate justin oh the look on his face is priceless worth the visit but again thankyou
No doubt, Justin is simply the best online guitar instructor on planet Earth. And even if at first glance I did not like what the app offered a few months ago, I bought it in the holiday sale. I have become addicted to it ever since. And now it is time for me for the F chord... :(

Barre chords make me crazy but seem manageable with this lesson. I have watched the whole video carefully and will watch again tomorrow with the guitar! Who knows, this might be just what I needed to master this peculiar stage of learning guitar!
Damn Justin. This is absolutely brilliant. Thank you so much for the work you put in to help guitar enthusiasts! I wish I had this lesson when I was struggling with barre chords. You are AMAZING!!!
I'm at work on break, so I can't practice this right away, but the rounded finger tip @ around 12:20 just blew my mind. I think this will really help me! Thank you for this amazing video!
Thanks so much, mate, this may be the best class I've had so far on barred chords, very easy to understand. You broke the subject into small parts and explained them so well, with the mechanics and common mistakes and all! Congratulations for taking your time to make this half-hour video and glueing back the bits at the end, it's a very educational video!
You are so thorough and calming to us beginners. You're a true teacher! I think I'm going to pick up an inexpensive electric guitar just so I can get on top of laying out my fingers properly. Then I'll go back to my accoustic for muscle building.
Hi,Justin..This is a very ,very helpful video for beginner like me.when u talk about mechanic it makes so much sense to do all barre chords(Maj) easier than that i did it so difficult before watching urs video tutorial.Thank you so much.👍🇱🇷👍
I'm literally playing guitar because of you and your awesome site. I'm almost 6 months in and I'm playing barre chords. My major issue is the B string not fully ringing out.
Been playing for 3 years and decided to go through your Beginners course, to see if I missed anything. Just finished Grade 2 today. This will be a great next step to check out. Although I play barre chords up and down the neck I still find it hard to hold and play barre for a longer period. There's one song that's just Cm Barre verse and chorus and my muscle is screaming by the end of it.
Thank you so much for this vid, I've been trying to get barre cords right for years and just couldn't get rid of the buzzing. I can do it easily now, I am so happy.
