Seen so many cases of emaciated dumped horses. I can only imagine how painful it is for such sensitive animals to be abandoned like that, just left to slowly starve to death by themselves... as people continue to breed and churn out more horses for 'sport'. Awful

My sister and I visited a ex-racehorse in an animal sanctuary in Norfolk. My sister who lives in Scotland had been given a year's sponsorship of this horse as a birthday present. When we reached his field, he and his 'herd' were so far away that we could only just make out that there was a chesnut in the group, but had no idea if it was him. We stood there for about 10 minutes hoping, but not expecting, that the herd would move closer. Then the horse we had been watching lifted his head, saw us, and left his herd to walk right across the field to 'talk' to us. And he was indeed the horse we had come to see. He didn't come expecting food, visitors are not allowed to feed the animals, he just came and stayed with us to be fussed until closing time forced us to leave him. I looked at his racing history when I got home. Racing against other horses was clearly not his strength, and at 7 years this beautiful soul was rescued on his way to slaughter. Thank God for those who saved his life and shame on those who abandoned him without finding a better life for him.

In 1987 after my horse ran six times and managed a second place at Aqueduct he was injured. I sent him to a layup farm where he was nursed back to health. I took him home; I have been told I was one of the first to offer aftercare back then. He lived to be 27 on my farm I had built for him and a rescue I adopted from the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation to keep him company. All TB horses deserve that.

In Australia now, the majority of owners actually do give their horses to OTTB Programs and ReTrainers to retrain their horses for people to buy for equestrian pursuits - I myself have one of those retrained thoroughbreds and I just love her to bits!! Not all racehorse owners are bad. And alot of time, it is actually the people that buy the ex racehorse thinking they are saving the horse , but they find out they don't have the knowledge or experience to handle and re-educate an ex racehorse, so it is them who get rid of them, not the original owners or racing industry. Racing Victoria have fantastic OTTB retraining programs for their racehorse industry.

"They're hooves grow out and they're no good for anything" is a complete copout you can cut and treat their hooves and they can be companions, hacking ponies or just pets. Their life isn't over, their usefulness to humans is. We are so quick to shoot a horse over a broken leg that will heal with treatment. If she didn't pass those tests to be an event horse she'd be dead even though she's in good health. We need to treat horses better. Most of us love our horses and share a bond, but the love and bond that you have with your horses is truly special. You breed some very nice horses, and your stallion has done so well in competition. That's what makes you rare, you could care less about the money, opportunities, or how that horse can benefit you. You do the opposite and benefit them with the best love and care in existence. Scott Brodie!!!! I met him a few years ago as he did a thoroughbred retraining clinic, and he's so kind. He now teaches horses classical dressage and does lessons etc (Heartland equestrian). I'm assuming this episode is fairly old now despite the upload date being 1 month ago (I guess it's like re-runs on tv lol). I hate the idea of horses being abandoned because they have no "use". Horses are not on this planet for us, they are living breathing animals who deserve a loving home, not just one that gives up on them when they have nothing to give anymore. Horses should be treated like family, not like equipment to win a ribbon or money.

She is starving. It will not be difficult to find out who is responsible and hold them accountable. You could have their racing license revoked. In fact, that is exactly what you should do.

Can't believe people dumped a gorgeous animal like this. We can't even get a horse in South East Asia. Even if we can it would cost a fortune. If only I could have one of these, I would love them and take such a good care of them.

Racing is a horrendous thing. The sheer misery of those animals and their disposability, the wastage of those who don’t make it, nobody considers them.

She’s beautiful. I don’t understand why she has to prove she has a right to live.
@Seleuce

I get your point, but you are being unrealistic. In the wild, this horse and any other domestic horse would not have to "prove" herself, yes. But she would in fact die after a few months because her breed has lost many physical qualities to survive on their own. She would get extremely flat, bad, cracked and infected hooves and go lame (TBs have horribly bad genetics for hooves and can't live without farriers), she would get infested with parasites which would raise her breed related extremely high need for high energy food, she would also freeze in winter because of her breed related thin coat which would, again, push her need for power food even further. She would get sick with respiratory, eye and skin infections, which would cause her to lose even more weight, and she would slowly waste away and starve to death. Now, that's not a nice prospect, is it. The vast majority of people do not keep horses to be costly ornaments in a field. If you are rich, have lots of green land or are willing to sacrifice your income to pay for the hay and the vet bills of a horse that gives nothing back other than looking a picture in the distance, wonderful, go ahead, I admire you. Most other people, though, want to ride, drive or do any other kind of activity with their horses. We keep them safe, healthy and well-fed, they do some physical work for us, I do not think this is unfair. I have to work for my living, too. The only objection I have is to dumb an animal or to neglect it, that's disgusting and makes me furious.

sad but even if a tb is useless and lame they can make wonderful companions to other people or animals, all horses deserve love

The thinking here is wrong, horses have value for just being horses and nothing asked of them. They are great companions. Horses are sentient beings and they have a calming and healing influence.
