In most cases in a personal injury lawsuit, the amount of money that you claimed for income in the past, five years is going to be the basis for your claim of lost wages. If you lie and cheat on your taxes, you could not only be forfeiting a large sum of money at retirement, you could also be harming your chance to recover in a personal injury lawsuit.

Would there be ethical issues involved if a client told you they'd been cheating on their taxes and wanted to stick to the number they'd reported? Obviously if they DON'T tell you that, you have no way of knowing the figures upon which the income-related claims are made are wrong; but if they DO tell you that, is that a problem? I suppose in the case at issue it would be disadvantageous for the client, as Jimbob is making a personal injury claim based on a lower income than he actually received, meaning he'd be entitled to less for his injuries; still, I would be extremely concerned if my client was telling me about his tax fraud.

Due to the attorney-client privilege, there isn't anything the lawyer can do about it. And if the client doesn't take the advice, a smart lawyer will withdraw.

7:14 don't agree. The money they take for Social Security and Medicare is to pay current recipients. It's not some account they put your money in under your name. So someone can not be cheating on their taxes and still to get shortchanged when they retire if there aren't enough people working to take money from to pay those recipients.
