I think the changes in gaming culture is one biggest issue with new card games. Company's don't have the opportunity to make mistakes like WotC did. WotC got to survive its growing pains because it was the first and was a unique product. Nowadays if a company makes a mistake in balance or themes most people just drop the game on the spot.

@SSJFutureGohan62093
@SSJFutureGohan62093 3 года назад
I hate negativity, but when I see people talk about how good Super’s meta game is, I get frustrated. The only reason the meta stays “fresh” is because of the massive amounts of product Bandai puts out, and the amount of power creep mixed in with those releases. I quit for good around Set 9, but have kept tabs on it. Vegeks (possibly Invoker as well) was the first deck that has really stayed good through multiple formats, but you can see they’re trying to put it away now. The secret rare cards or signed special rare cards do not speak for demand, they have been absolutely destroyed by investors - you have people buying Victory Strike and the Goku/Vegeta SCR to get the mythical “PSA 10” go ahead and check eBay. Those cards are $1000 because they are the most recent forms of the most popular characters. On top of this... The game is run by Bandai. They’ll destroy it at some point, like they did with the Naruto CCG and the Dragon Ball CCG from 2008.

Rudy doesn’t know what he’s talking about in DBSCG. Period. There is no rotation, he doesn’t know about the tournament of power boxes or the string of sets that are more expensive than others like draft box 04. These are the exact type of magic product he would invest in. Furthermore the game is very cheap to play and demand for old boxes in general is not very high for two reasons, one the majority of singles are pretty cheap and demand hasn’t required old boxes be cracked yet, and there has been some power creep meaning the newer stuff is more desirable. The game has found its stride and if Rudy analyzed the game better he would realize it’s got ALL the ingredients for a powerhouse of a card game, I played magic for almost 20 years and I like dragon ball super better. The game is very affordable and would be huge if people gave it a shot

Hey Rudy, official judge for the fftcg here and in my opinion the community for this game has never been better. Tournaments here in the UK consistantly get 100+ players all the time. I think the issue with the sealed products is that there are only a handful of chase rare cards from each set that boosters themselves aren't worth it. The singles however, are definitely holding value. Shantotto from opus 1 is still holding a solid £10-15 price tag because the card is just good. Some singles even cost upwards of £60 now too. It's understandable to be sceptical, but I think this game is going to go far, especially with its creator, Kageyama-san, being very involved with the community, coming to several tournaments to see how people play the game, and to join in himself (I have played against him in multiple occasions) Do with opus X coming up, opus XI has also been spoiled along with new starter sets, and the world championship happening in LA soon, I definitely think it would be worth looking into again. Thanks for reading and stay frosty.

The funny thing with dragon ball super is while some old booster boxes are on clearance, those are just the unpopular ones. The popular old booster boxes are so hard to find. They are getting scalped on eBay and Amazon for 8-16 times their original prize, their individual cards are going for 400 times regular super rates from other booster boxes. All this shows it's very much still in demand. The fact that you don't only have to go to hobby stores to find them, just Walmart, target, best buy selling them just like pokemon, yugioh and magic speaks that it is still popular.

Sure the cards I did sell (like a set of the dark, ali from cairo, set of 4th edition, set of ice age) are worth more now, but I think I did ok with them. I hope that KeyForge sticks around, at least for another 5 years. I appreciate M:tG for what it was and what it's done but the game today is just not that rewarding to play or commit time to. I'm speaking as a player, not an investor, of course. I'm also squarely a "Johnny", as Mark Rosewater might say. What was worthwhile and interesting about Magic was the exploration and creative expression. I could care less about "crushing my opponents" or competitive play. Modern M:tG doesn't reward the "Johnnys" much anymore. I think KeyForge's strength AND weakness (and what may be it's financial undoing) is that it is aimed squarely at us "Johnnys" who stopped bothering with Magic long ago because it just wasn't interested in appealing to us. Listening to Garfield's mission statement for KeyForge convinced me that this is the vehicle for me to get back to what made M:tG fun (and thus successful) in the first place. That sense of curiosity, rawness and a community of creative minds. I don't expect it to ever seriously compete with Magic. I don't know that any game ever will. But I'm not terribly interested in that. Magic can continue raking in the dough and I'm happy for it's success...but I haven't spent a nickel on it since around 2001 and I don't see anything that the game can do to change my mind now. FFTCG is doing fine. From a selling product standpoint, it's a ton of sales out the gate then stagnant after. Tournament scene is bigger than ever, and player involvement has its ebb and flow. It has good balance and a fantastic secondary market. There's only 4 banned cards, and even 2 of them are not NEEDED bans, but designer-requested bans. No, none of the other TCGs are ever gonna beat the big 3, but they aren't out to. They appeal to the people who don't want to play those other games, or have issues with those other games/communities. MTG has the advantage of being the oldest and most well-known. Pokemon appeals to kids and adults very easily with a low ceiling of entry. Yugioh has a tv show that has cool scenarios and encourages the purchase of product. It's all about what's already established and dominating the market. Since it's what I'm into, I can definitely say that FFTCG didn't set out to take down the giants; it pays homage to them in many ways. Regardless, the game is fine. Product sales are in a bad lull but that doesn't mean the game is dying. Maybe from a distributor's eyes, but to myself, a TO and player, it's just as good as any other game. It has no more or less players in my area than the other games, and overlaps with a few. A huge part of the problem is that boxes are sold SUPER cheap on Amazon, which I've not seen as much for other TCGs. But it destroys anybody trying to sell them for MSRP or even shops that sell it well below that. All the shops in Chicago sell theirs for 100. But if you can go on Amazon and buy a box for 85+cheap shipping, the shops are going to suffer. I've seen first-hand how it hurts the shops in the area. I mean, I know a guy who just bought an Opus 4 box for $30!!! No distributor in the area is offering them that low, so shops don't bother carrying it. I mean, there's no value in the set for established players, but that's neither here nor there. With ALL that being said, with the release of full-art cards, people are scrambling to get the bling in Opus 9 and onward. Because boy are they NICE. I just hate the snickers we get from MTG players after seeing videos like this. It's obviously the people and not the video, though.

Its just facts. I loved Force of Will, played it from day 1 for 2 years. It was fun and the cards held value for a while. Then one day, reprints happened, killing the market value of cards, Bahamut was a turn 2 win so everyone ran it, and they started making card corrections left and right. Overnight, the game died to nearly no one. My local store stopped selling it and no one plays it anymore. It was a fun game and I wish it was still around on a large scale but its not. Nearly all card games suffer from one of 3 problems: 1. Poor design that requires corrections 2. Poor meta and diversity, meaning you can only play a few ways if you want to win, 3. No stability, meaning the cards dont hold value long term and lose all value when not played. To be successful you need all three to last long, which only Pokemon and Magic have currently. I would love to see other games but they need to support the community of collectors and and investors, they are the back bone, no matter how much people want to raise pitch forks towards them. To keep them, you gotta keep value in the cards. To keep everyone, you need the game to be fun, diverse, and not broken to the point its a hassle to keep up with card corrections.

@Austinarcher10

As a long time FFTCG player and content creator for it, the largest thing holding the game from being great is that there is currently no rotation. With that being the case, decks only end up needing an extremely small % of cards from older sets so people don't by boxes. Thus causing those prices to go down drastically. Opus 10 is releasing in a few weeks and we already know about Opus 11 and 12. There are the normal issues with distribution and community growth that are inherent with fighting against larger games such as Pokemon of MTG, but I've known a large contingent of MtG players that will say FFTCG is more fun and worth playing than MtG but prizing and money are the biggest things that keep them in WOTC pocket. I would love to talk more on this, but ultimately I think FFTCG was a bad include in this as the game is continually growing more and more and while it won't show off the chart financial movements like other TCG's and I think looking at it from that perspective really diminishes the growth of the game (as well as the other TCGS you mentioned).

And I guess also kinda related. Whatever happened to the original Naruto TCG? They had maybe like 20+ expansions, strong resale value on the secondary market of both sealed and single cards, and a cult following. As long as the loot cards are redeemable in-game the boxes will remain high priced

World of Warcraft TCG is kinda unique in that it did not fail..it was pulled. Those Treasure Packs that were Cryptozoic's last release were brilliant! Extended Art Foil Thunderfury's etc... so we could all finish our decks were the best 😁

Well here it is 2 years later and DBS is doing great! Cards and booster boxes holding value and constantly going up! Know plenty of people loving the game and it growing very big right now.

Ah I remember the days when square could do no wrong. Back before they became a movie studio slumming it with games.

From my experience (about 12 years of selling this stuff) games come and go, they make money for a short time and then fall off the wagon. There are only 3 games that stick though. Yu-Gi-Oh!, Pokemon and Magic.

I can second that. Been in the game for 8 years, and there are plenty of titles that stick around for a year, perhaps more. But if you want something for the long run, then the Top 3 are the way to go.

@kamionkami1 much like CFV, it's too expensive compared to the 3 main TCGs. It makes the barrier for entry higher, so a consumer would rather opt for a cheaper game that is also better known. We declined distribution for it becuaee of the high price.

@@50kal44 I'm not talking about what it costs you to play the game - I am talking about the wholesale price direct from the suppliers.
