This recorder- reproducer 8mm magnetic sound projector dates back to 1959, years before Super 8 film came out. There is a loop adjuster that can be used to change the sound sync. without stopping the film. This projector conforms to the now prevalent industry standard, that the sound be placed on the film 56 frames ahead of the picture for Standard 8mm. This lead point is necessary because the sound reproduction apparatus is placed below the aperture. The soundtrack is a magnetic stripe on the edge of the film. This machine has two speeds, 16 and 24 frames per second, which should only be changed while the motor is on and the belt is moving. (Sound films run at 24 frames per second). This projector uses only Regular (Standard) 8mm movie film. (The sprocket holes are large in 8mm film; smaller in Super 8). The amplifier has tubes that take a minute to warm up. Fairchild also made the very first 8mm sound camera. It recorded sound on film while filming.

Sweeet! I never saw a Standard 8mm sound projector. This one looks great! Love those old metal spools. I owned a super 8mm stereo sound projector - actually three: an Eumig and two Bauer back in the 1970s through early 80s. I noticed that the sound heads are much farther apart from the image which should yield a much smoother and better sound. On super 8mm the sound was just 18 frames advanced - not enough to fully stabilize it to run smoothly. The capstan and pinch roller were placed after the playback/recording heads, so the lower loop was still slamming against the sound head and a slight jitter could be heard. I guess Super 8 was designed with an in-camera sound recording in mind from the start. This machine here looks just great and much more rugged and durable than the often flimsy Super 8mm projector designs from the 1970s, including top of the line projectors such as the Bauer T-600 stereo (I owned both the very flimsy claw fed T-18 and the supposed top of the line, fortunately sprocket wheel fed, T-600 stereo).... apart from the slightly larger image of Super 8mm and the low tech stereo option (one track was 0,8mm wide and the other about 0,48mm at the sprocket hole side - initially not even intended to record and play back sound). I guess 8mm amateur film technology became worse back in the day (1950s through 1970s: from clockwork precision machined to plastic toys). Oh well....

Thanks Bruce, nice video. I have this projector, an external sound speaker (in a separate case shaped like the projector case but smaller) and two cameras. The projector works great and is ultra-clean. One of my cameras had the ancient rechargeable battery inside it (it is an oddball size) which leaked all over everything and it will be quite a restoration job. They were 12V rechargeable batteries, which I did not even know existed at the time. The other camera I got (both are the later single lens models) already had wires coming out of the camera with clips on them to, supposedly, attach to an external source. I hooked them up to my car battery and the motor whirrs away! I do not know if the camera works. To answer Occhio's question, for a few years, pre-soundstriped film was available in regular 8mm format. I never knew about this. I cut my teeth making little movies on silent regular 8mm, and then moved up to striped Super8mm film and cameras. But the idea was the same, except of course regular 8mm is roll film. All of this stuff made by Fairchild is industrial/commercial quality, likely because of their experience making aerial cameras and other cameras for heavy-duty applications. It is all metal, heavy, and has comprehensive features. I understand that the gear was EXTREMELY expensive, likely well over $2000 in today's dollars for the entire outfit. 16mm could be had for that and provide a much better image. Still, they seemed to sell a number of these.

Thanks. I never had the sound camera. I would send my silent film to Kodak to have the magnetic stripe added.

ToyKingWonder The camera was built like a tank. In the 70's the local camera store said they could order the pre-striped 8mm film from Kodak. They had to have it made special when someone needed it. Now the camera store is long gone.

Bruce Lesko Great history. Like I said, never new about this part of 8mm. Amazing. There were a number of commercial sound films that you could get as well in the sound regular 8mm format---they pop up on eBay.

In 50 years, i've never heard about an 8 mm sound projector. I know we had those plastic vinyle 33 rpm mini dics format that you had to set up with the record player and plugged to the projector in order to sync the sound and the image. But other than that i've never seen regular 8 mm gage films with a track tape hooked to the film strip. You're mostly referring to the Super 8 mm sound format system.

My dad worked for Fairchild and recorded a lot of home movies using this camera back in the early 60's when I was a tiny kid. I have the movies and can see them, but would love to hear them, as both my parents have passed. I'd love to know if you know of anywhere that I can get my movies transferred from one of these cameras. It would be a dream come true. Thanks for any help on this!

Here is one of several places that transfers 8mm sound film. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ML4ja1ANsIk.html

Thanks, too bad they are all the way in New Zealand. Do you any places that has the projector that you do? It is the only one that plays the film that was recorded on the Fairchild camera, as the sound is on the strip on the actual film. I got the film transferred once, but they couldn't do the sound. If you ever run across one of these projectors keep me in mind as I would buy it so I can watch my movies.

@@nostalgicmemoryexperiment1960 Did you ever get your sound films transferred? we have an old Sound Standard 8 projector and we digitally transfer films. Here is a sample (but no sound). We will be posting some samples with sound in a week or two from this date on this comment

@@nostalgicmemoryexperiment1960 Yes as mentioned a dual format sound projector like some Eumig models could do it although these machines are now up to 50 years old and will need overhaul before risking films in them. I specialise in transferring such magnetic sound tracks using a professional tape machine which I have personally modified for 8mm film. Much safer on the film and much better sound quality. Feel free to contact me.

Since the film is running at 24fps...most videos cameras would reproduce with a heavy flicker , totally unlike the real projected image.

I have this projector and am trying to find a bulb for it. Is there any way you could give me the code ? I would be very grateful for your help. Thank you so much.
@leskobruce

+Paul Lambert Hello. The bulb code is DJL. Also DCH / DJA, DFP. Note: DCL is a substitute for DCH, DJA, DFP, DFA, DFG. Shop around. Don't pay too much. You may want to try looking at Topbulb, or Interlight.

Hello Bruce, I just picked one of these projectors with the external sound speaker at an estate stale. The machine turns on, the bulb works, but when I turn the motor on, The internal motor spins, but the reel holders on top do not spin. Do you know why this happens or if it can be fixed? Thank you, Steve

If the claw does not move, the problem is with the belt that goes from the motor to the shutter. You can buy belt (from Urbanski Film) that can be cut to length, then fused together by lighting a match to one end and sticking it together. If the claw moves and the sprocket wheels do not turn, the timing belt is broken. These are a lot of work to replace, provided you can even find one. This belt has ribs that fit the ribs in the wheels it is on. ALWAYS KEEP THIS BELT FREE FROM OIL AND BELT DRESSING. Don't put ANYTHING on it, ever! I replaced a timing belt (with help from a friend) over 40 years ago, so they CAN last a long time.

Thanks Bruce, I think you have solved my problem. But just to clarify, when you say the claw, are your referring to the wheel that catching the film and keeps it moving, or what is the claw. P.s i assume I have the first problem you described with the claw not moving. Thanks, Steve
@leskobruce
@leskobruce 7 лет назад
Hi Steve. A claw like arm connected to a revolving shutter, the intermittent, engages the film, holds it perfectly still for a fraction of a second, and then moves it while the shutter blocks the light from the screen. The intermittent (claw) then swings back into place and grasps another frame of film, repeating the cycle as the shutter revolves, allowing light to reach the screen again.
