Fairport Convention, Richard & Linda Thompson : I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight

From a program called Celebration (Granada TV, UK) in August 1981. This featured the then-disbanded Fairport Convention reformed for the occasion - the Full House line-up plus Linda Thompson, and brass band in this case.
The song is the title track of the Thompsons' classic 1974 album.
Yes, the video quality is crap but unfortunately, I'm yet to see any better!

I'm reminded of the liner notes in her best of where she said that, by the time she recorded this, she just wanted to see the bright lights of the delivery room. She almost looks pregnant here again.

The atmospheric production on the studio track really gave Linda's voice a lift. Can't quite muster the spirit here even though the brass band is a nice touch.

In his memoir Richard wrote that by the 1980's Linda could no longer sing his songs, that her voice was failing. I thought it a bit cruel in the casual manner in which he expressed this, but apparently he wasn't wrong

@@44elisdadWell isn't it nicest to Linda to be casual? Expressing any feelings about it one way or another is not his place when it was Linda that had the condition. Plus its a fact that happened - she was out for a good few decades until she recovered enough to sing again.

According to Richard, the publisher got the word wrong ---- it should read " A couple of drunken *nights* rolling on the floor...."

Cant beat Rock and Roll, just listened to Sorrento, a classical song, a great song ! But it cant get your blood flowing, feet kicking and give you goosebumps like Rock and Roll, better than Britney, Madonna and rap , Huh? Long live Berry, Lennon, Joe Strummer and ROCK and ROLL !

"absolute treasure! this is as english as it gets" Excepting Linda's mother was a Glaswegian and Linda spent most of her youth in Scotland. And Richard is half Scottish too!

I'm American but in my studies I've come to my conclusion that the people of the British isles have more in common then differences. I include Ireland in that too. My grandma was a Donegal lass and she didn't speak ill of the English, Scottish, or Welsh.

after checking the Wiki entry, she may very well have been. As it says, Kamila was just born when Richard left. Allowing for a little hyperbole, that puts us into 1982 at most.
