1968, pretty much the first incarnation of one of my favourite 'folk-rock' (sic) bands of all time (at this stage of their career they were known as the British Jefferson Airplane), featuring Judy Dyble (replaced the next year by Sandy Denny) and Iain Matthews (Ian Matthews)(who later scored a #1 hit with Joni Mitchell's 'Woodstock' as Matthews Southern Comfort) on vocals, and the world famous singer/songwriter/guitarist Richard Thompson, as well as Tyger Hutchings, Simon Nicol and Martin Lamble, who sadly died on 12th May 1969, aged only 19, after Fairport's van crashed on the M1 motorway. Richard Thompson's girlfriend Jeannie Franklyn was killed too, the rest of the band escaped with minor injuries.
Written by Emitt Rhodes. From the bands first album 'Fairport Convention' featuring Ian MacDonald (later known as Ian Matthews), Richard Thompson, Judy Dyble, Simon Nicol, Tyger (Ashley) Hutchings and Martin Lamble. Clare Lowther also featured on 'cello.

Goodbye to my beloved aunt. Judy. She, together with her husband, my Uncle Simon,( de la Bedoyere/ Stable) showed me, an eleven year-old in 1970, that there was a different way of living, what came to be called 'alternative'.They held parties at my parents' home in Wimbledon in the late Sixties: acid fuelled and entertained by the unreleased Sgt Pepper and Velvet Underground. Then chucked it in for chickens in Oxfordshire. Her lifestyle appealed but it was obviously naive, anachronistic. They gave me Hendrix, Ten Years After, The Floyd - powerful things for an English schoolboy. Thirty years later I too followed their path into rural obscurity and discovered the joy to be had from creativity for its own sake, from immersion in the natural cycle and cooking stews. I''m not daft. Jude moved to the sticks when land was cheap and a generation later I made enough cash from advertising to escape London and a nervous breakdown. Few can follow. But I did. My wayward Aunt Jude and Uncle Simon had it right. I have a lot to thank Jude for. The first word I keep for her is -gentle and the second is pastoral.

I saw Fairport Convention at Leeds University in about 1968. They were the support group but I can still remember the beautiful voice of the singer who I presume was Judy. I didn't see them live again until a few years ago at the St Ives festival. The early memories are the best.

Judy Dyble sadly left us on 12th July following a long illness borne with great courage. She was 71. Judy was one of the pioneers of the English folk rock scene in the 1960s - a founding member of Fairport Convention and vocalist with Trader Horne. She withdrew from the music scene in the early 1970s to concentrate on her family but returned in 1997 for Fairport's 30th anniversary reunion at Cropredy. It was wonderful to see her with them again. Further Fairport anniversary appearances followed. Judy then went on to make three excellent albums, the first one unofficially launched at London pub run at the time by my pal Dan Ogus. This began a revival of her music career, which included numerous guest appearances on albums by a host of artists. In 2017, Judy started working with Big Big Train’s multi-instrumentalist frontman David Longdon. Their album "Between A Breath And A Breath" will be released in September. Two songs from the sessions which won't be included on the album, "Crossbones" and "The Daguerreotype", will be released in the autumn (subsequent to the album release) as a tribute to Judy, and In accordance with Judy’s wishes the two tracks will be made available as free downloads, , but it would be appreciated if you could make a donation to Judy’s chosen charity, the Barley Greyhound Sanctuary. (www.barleykennels.co.uk) I always looked forward to meeting Judy at Cropredy, walking her dogs on the field. As a fellow greyhound rescuer, we always talked about animal rescue, and never music... I shall miss those chats...R.I.P Judy x

a rare chance to catch Martin Lamble performing on drums before he passed away from the motorway crash that also took life of Genie the Tailor (Richard Thompson's girl friend at the time and a cousin of Phil Ochs) and injured other Fairport Convention band members. Sandy Denny did not travel with the band on this fateful trip. This song's author, Emitt Rhodes, was from the group Merry-Go-Around and was called "the one-man Beatles". He passed away in 2020.

Richard Thompson has creative genius and technical skills at the level of Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen. Beyond their range, he's a fleet-fingered folkie, a folk rocker, as well as progressive hard rocker; a brilliant poet with a powerful, nuanced, only lightly-polished voice; and he's advanced his talents across fifty-plus years. Genius still rockin! - Doug Pratt, Atlanta, Georgia, USA

The collective skill, tightness, mastery of dynamics, ferrocious ability to swing, stop/start on a overall feel of these fairly young musicians is just staggering. And, what a great decision it was for them to cover a song that I'd think was pretty obscure at the time...of course, written by the 17yr old Emitt Rhoads and recorded with his Hawthorne California based band. The Merry Go-Round mere months prior to Fairport recording their version. It's pretty obvious that Richard Thompson is playing phenomenally here. He's locked and loaded frim yhe get-go...(his playing on the second song they played "Reno, Nevada" is even better...if you can imagine that!!!) I have to emphatically agree with others who have commented on the rest of the band's performances and, ability...the rhythm section is just ridiculously on fire and, they're both exceptional players and they are soooo tight. What a powerful and dynamic bass/drum axis here. It's such a shame that Martin Lamble was taken at such an early age. He surely would have been recognized as one of the greatest. In a broad sense as I'm certain that he was rated by his peers. Hutchings of course, was otherworldly the minute he started. Thankfully, the French held their arts in a much higher regard than most countries and we have historically important documents like this to revisit as we wish to and, those who have not been born yet will experience the magic and the legacy of Martin Lamble (and, the entire band) will continue to live on to astound for generations

Having known the original from the debut 'Merry Go Round' LP, I'd always wondered why it had never been released as an A side for them. 50-plus years on, I'm astounded by how mature and well written Emitt Rhodes' lyrics are and how he crafted them into a top-shelf pop song. They didn't, she left.

Judy was sacked, in her words “unceremoniously dumped”, and Ashley told her the sad news in Muswell Hill.

Tend to agree, but in England here I would never have known this song had existed if it wasn't for an English band bringing it to my attention - I had never heard of The Merry Go Round, but this brought them to my attention. And footage of early Fairport is very rare, so I'm grateful to have this, and they do make a decent fist of it imho. RIP Emitt, RIP Judy.

Was this recording done in 1968? But in 1968 Sandy Denny was the singer surely? Is the date of the recording 1967?

Peter Brown The tape I have with these 3 (precious) performances is marked as 68, the album was released then, June I think, and Judy was brutally replaced by Sandy not long after, so both of them were part of the band in that year (I know I said in the description previously that Sandy joined in 1969 but I was wrong about that)

@@vibesinthesky Oh thanks that's so helpful. I was puzzled as I saw Fairport in an Open Air performance in Hampstead Heath around June-July 1968 (Jeffersons heading the line-up) and that was Sandy who was the lead singer on this show. I'm so sorry to hear the replacement of Judy was so cruel and unpleasant. I am a musician (www.lemang.com) but Fairport and Richard Thompson are most valued favourites with me and this song is so perfectly performed - so well arranged and rehearsed!

Peter Brown yes there is a fairport at the bbc

With Sandy singing some of those very songs from the first album so she’d obviously been rehearsing them in readiness for taking Judy’s place - not Fairports finest hour, but thankfully Judy got over it

i'm no folk expert, but isn't this a tad heavy, fast? don't get me wrong, I dig this song, but was it received well in "folk circles".

At this early point they weren't into trad folk. They emulated US West Coast bands like Airplane, Dead, Byrds etc. They also covered rare Dylan and early Joni Mitchell songs. Their 'British' sound began when Sandy Denny arrived.

At this stage, FC were folk-rock, not folk. They went all folky later after they hired Sandy Denny.
