At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if their retro trade in program gets thrown out. Also, who the fuck goes to gamestop for old games? I go to my local game shops or online places like ebay and amazon for old games. Gamestop I save for used console games (i.e. Wii U or PS3) that I don't feel like ordering/waiting for online, amiibo or Steam cards.

@MrCrossa

+ladynikkie It's not that I don't trust them (actually now I don't after watching all these podcasts) but regardless, it just seems like I'd get a much better deal at local game shops (even though one of them for a while put on price tags that ruin the CAUTION labels on the back of NES and SNES games) Point is, it just seems like local game stores and other online shops have overall better deals in comparison. Got a boxed copy of metroid for $30 (no manual but it did come with old hand written notes)

After just spending my hard earned money at a local game store who took the time to buff my discs AND show me how to properly clean (yes I was worried about cleaning with alcohol) all of the NES carts I bought seeing stuff like this makes me so sad for those individuals who got shafted. Plus, GameStop's lack of care/feigned ability to do nothing is hardly any kind of consolation. Like you and Ian have said there is clearly a disassociation with GameStop not realizing they have entered a collector market with a commercial market mentality. Trust a LOCAL retro store to do it better, seriously, I don't know why anyone would have 'faith' in GameStop enough to try again or risk trying to get a retro game from them at all given what has happened.

all i know is that every time I ever traded in a game to gamestop, they always tested it first, they had all the systems against the back wall behind their register and checked the games. and they always also took my personal info, my name and address before giving me my trade in value.

Same company that knowingly sold RROD 360 consoles.
@sweetfeathery
@sweetfeathery 8 лет назад
+Jason Nesbitt (Frankybarrelass) These were original Xbox 360 consoles that had the famous Red Ring of Death. I use to work there, and was told to simply apply a "refurbish fee" if the console being sold to us did not work properly. These consoles would be sent to a repair shop in Grapevine Texas, where they would be "tested and guaranteed to work" which was never the case.
@MrCrossa

+Bobby A And they wonder why most people hate them (that + the subject in the video and them opening copies of Xenoblade Chronicles to sell it used for $90) and wonder why they're going to become irrelevant in a few years if they keep this shit up. I like the people at my local gamestops, but let's be real here, I don't like the company itself a whole lot with controversies like those.
@sweetfeathery
@sweetfeathery 8 лет назад
MrCrossa Xenoblade was not the only game they did that with. When I was working there, we got in "used" copies of Fatal Frame, Nocturne, Shin Megami Tensei, and some other Atlus games that were simply ripped open with a refurb sticker covering the barcode.

MrCrossa Think I even recall Marvel vs Capcom 2 and Silent Hill 2 being some of those games. When I worked there it was way before everyone had smartphones and facebook was just starting to be a thing, which is why I don't think you heard much about it. What was crazy about the time I worked there is that we had TONS of overstock GameCube games and other accessories that are now worth quite the penny.

This is trickle-down corporate greed. Store managers would rather sell fake stuff and get credit for the sale. Yielding better sales numbers while taking a chance that the items aren't returned. The high value of this cart lends credence to the theory that Gamestop knew it was fake.

I don't know where they got the footage of the facility where the games are cleaned and tested, because as far as I'm concerned it doesn't exist. I ordered a few NES games just to see what I would get. They were cheaper games, so they were all real, but they were all FILTHY inside and out. The labels were damaged and one of them had a molasses like grime on the pins. That initial "article/video" of the cleaning facility was obvious propaganda.

That red conker cart is hilarious, I'd almost want to try and make the shittiest and most obvious fake ever and see if it gets past them. I worked at GameStop from 2007-2010...lost track of how many OBVIOUS GBA bootlegs I found just sitting in our display case 'cause my coworkers didn't have the sense to refuse them. Okay, some of them were probably shipped from other stores, but still...company at large couldn't even handle THAT, let alone this. I found a copy of Pokemon FireRed in a black cart. HELLO! RED FLAG HERE! I found a copy of Yoshi's Island (SMA3) with a non-standard label...booted it up. Thing started with a message something to the effect of F*** The Man, bragging about being a bootleg. Oh yeah, we wanna sell this to some unsuspecting parent. The thing is, it shouldn't even require TRAINING to figure this crap out. Most of it is OBVIOUS if you're into games to any decent degree. This is just straight-up negligence, pure and simple.

A side note. Never forget that stuff like this runs on supply and demand. We as a retro community ASK for these schemes, indirectly. For me, it mirrors how huge bullshit-DLC has become. If we don't buy it, they won't sell it. Also, don't overestimate the interest of employees. Just because they accepted the game doesn't mean they didn't see the word "REPRO"on there. Kicking up a lot of stink with a customer, possibly having to involve the manager, might not be worth the hassle to them.

NBA Jam 2000, NFL Quarterback Club '01, Spider-Man and Rocket: Robot on Wheels were also Red Carts. I don't think Gamestop realizes the Retro Game market. These aren't people that are just out to play some classic games, about 80% of them are collectors. Someone may have had a Conker's with a broken cartridge and decided to put the board in a new one, but only had Red ones, so they put it in that. The labels easily come off with a hair dryer, so they're not hard to switch. I had a copy of NFL QB Club '01 (Red), Madden 2001 (Blue) and Superman. I took the carts apart, took the labels off and made a Superman 64 game with a Blue back and a Red front. I gave it to my brother-in-law who is a huge Superman fan. GameStop thinks people just want to play Classic Games, they don't care if it's in it's original case or not because it doesn't affect the gameplay. But I'd say about 80% of the market belongs to collectors. The DuckTales 2 fiasco is complete Bullshit.

This is why gamestop should hire people like me who knows there shit. Years ago when i use to care about gamestops i tried and tried and tried to get a job at gamestops here. I never got an interview. I talked to one manger and he told me they would never hire me because i knew to much. because i KNEW TO MUCH. That was a slap in the face. then you see things like this happen. I haven't even step inside a gamestop since 2010. i can't stand gamestop for so many reasons and this is another reason why i won't ever deal with gamestop ever again. I go to a local gaming store here that i just love to death that is retro and new stuff.

+NotWatching666999 You're assuming that GameStop *wants* to fix this problem, though. But why would they? They've built their retro trade-in system to favor themselves in case a customer is unsatisfied with the service, and they're making all the money thanks to the built-in loopholes.

Hey Gamestop I have some advice for you. If you dont want to take the time to test or clean games then start making or printing stickers to put on each cartridge that can be scanned and traced back to the store/individual who brought the game in to begin with. If you can trace back who brought in that particular DuckTales 2 game and slap some charges on the people who do shit like that then it will prevent people from selling you fake games. YES! A .001 cent sticker can solve all of these fucking problems for everyone!

Love my local retro store Geno Games, the owner tells me up front if the game is a repo or not (case or otherwise) and for the most part, knows his shit and tests it before it goes on shelves to be sold. My question is how can a startup who has been in business for hardly a year be able to supply fantastic service and be knowledgeable about his product, yet a multi-million dollar business not? I just hope this service does not come up to Canada cause EB does not need this shit shoved on them if the US branch (Gamestop) cannot even get it right.

it's gamestop. you can bring in an empty shell and they will give you credit. anything they can do to make another nickel they are all for. is there any way for people to file a lawsuit over this? past gamestop behavior aside, they are obviously not providing the service advertised. from everything I've heard, ordering from gamestop's website is nothing but a disaster. furthermore I have heard they charge a restocking fee on retro stuff and they don't pay the shipping. that's just what I've heard but I've heard it a few times. a return policy should absolve gamestop of any wrong doing

Gamestop, the place where I went to ask for an arcade stick (ugh a what?) you know like a fightstick on an arcade machine with buttons (oh, that..... well ummm we don't carry that because we aren't actually a game store... we just sell console games)

I don't know if this has been said yet or not. But don't you think part of the problem could be GameStop employees that have knowledge about the more expensive titles getting their friends to come in with fakes and chop up the money? Seems like a pretty easy thing to do IMO.
@TheRetroRenegade
@TheRetroRenegade 8 лет назад
It just seems so easy... So many people selling reproduction "replacement" labels for games on ebay, and anyone can just take a Golf or a Silent Service or something and just slap the label on the cartridge. You can turn a Top Gun into a Snow Brothers for less than $10 bucks and GameStop will buy it...

i remember gamestop when it used to be funcoland. this was back in the 90's and even then, they had this whole crazy list with the nes games. it was like the stock market, every game had a different price depending on it's rarity and they had different trade in values and everything. like a copy of Black Bass cost $75 but the super mario bros/duck hunt cartridge had a 1 penny trade in value. gamestop has always been in the business of maximizing their profits from the trading of retro games....but i dunno, i would be mad too if I got something other than what I ordered. Where is the quality control? whether the "victim" is telling the truth or not, Gamestop ought to have a system in place to prevent this from happening

I love the angry ranting part of this video and I didn't expect GameStop to be this bad when it came to retro trade ins.

To be fair, a few bad trade ins does not represent the entirety of their trade-in program.

summed up by Pat in the last 30 seconds, "they don't care". its as simple as that. until they make nothing from doing this by no one buying from them, they will not care

Gamestop's retro games idea will probably die without announcing it like when they tried to sell phones and tablets. The upside is getting all the cheap clearance though!

I actually got a PS3 System from Gamestop that had a The Great Gatsby Blu-Ray inside the disk slot. And it's funny, cause on the side there was a picture showing what a person checked. 10/10

The retro games market is becoming tainted with knockoffs/bootlegs/repro carts. This will ultimately poison the collectors market. People still want to play these old games. In addition to inflated prices. Now everyone has to worry about counterfeit products. This is why Nintendo & Sony need to STEP UP and expand their library of retro games from past generations onto Virtual Console & PSN/PS Classics. At least Microsoft had the right idea with Rare Replay. The sad thing is...For the collectors price of a boxed complete mint condition Conker's Bad Fur Day+working N64. You could spend a few bucks more & get an XBOX ONE with Rare Replay.

I got ripped off in 2003 and have never been back. I bought Age of Empires 2 in a sealed box that clearly had the manual and everything inside, so it seemed like a good deal. It did have everything when I opened it, except for the actual game. Instead it had a jewel case with Real War. I still haven't played AoE2.

I am curious to know how many sales that Gamestop does with its retro games, especially their cartridge games. If they deal with 10s of thousands of these games, crap like this will slip through. I mean lets say that they sell 10k retro games a year. Well lets say that 600 of those games were bad that is 6%. Meaning that you potentially would have someone tweeting you, emailing you, etc a bad experience for almost over a year and a half when in reality only 6% of their sales were bad. I can't go off on a company without more information. With that said, they really need to train their employees to notice reproduction carts cause that should be pretty easy to spot and they need a working retro system in each store to test these games out. It isn't like they are being swamped with these retro games.

GameStop also happens to photocopy the boxes of the games they have when you buy it, along with manuals, or at least the one I went to does. I went to another one, thinking to get GTA V, and the box is BROKEN.

Kinda surprised no one has ran into bootleg Dreamcast games yet ordering through Gamestop. Considering how piracy was so easy on that system. Just be glad they're not dealing with Game Boy or GBA games again(yet), as that crap would be more rampant than the NES fakes. It's why local independent game stores in my area won't even take any portable games older than the DS anymore(don't want to risk it).

What propably happend. Person buys Ducktales 2 from GS. Then returns a fake Ducktales 2 claiming it does not work. Then somehow whoever took it back registered it as a "return". It gets send back. Then someone orders Ducktales 2 and receives that broken fake cartridge.
@NoName-cz3wn
@NoName-cz3wn 8 лет назад
So someone sends it back because it doesn't work, and Gamestop doesn't test it before sending it back out? Idk if you were trying to defend GS, but if you were, you failed lol.

Why don't they just give their store front employees 3.8 and 4.5 security bits to check the more expensive games that come in? Seems like a simple fix to a simple problem.

Also, just one thing about these GameStop fiascos. I wasn't there, I can't say for sure it was GameStop or the customer doing the ripping off. But for you guys to act like it's just absolutely impossible that the customer could do the ripping off is sad. Completely normal that multiple GameStop employees that handled this game didn't notice "reproduction" written on the label, yet just absurd to think a customer could have bought ducktales 2 and then sent a reproduction back for a refund? I'll at least admit I could be wrong as I wasn't there. As was no one else, besides the customer. I harbor a great deal of anger towards GameStop for various reasons, but I'll at least try to be impartial. A perfect fix for this would be when a retro cartridge game over $80 or so is sold online, it has to be done site to store. So the customer goes in to the store they choose to send it to and the employee opens it in front of them and tests it out. Possibly check the boards with the customer.

Honestly, I'm still waiting on them to fix my order of fucking amiibo cards. They sent me half of the order I paid for, and the whole thing was on the manifest of the box. So I'm sitting there with Animal Crossing Happy Homes, and just the one single card that came with the game. That's bullshit. I jumped through loops to get through to them enough that they'd offer to replace the items not in the order or give a refund. NEITHER HAS HAPPENED YET! I'm supposedly going to get this form in the email that I have to fill out before that even happens. Basically, the website's notoriety is not limited to the retro games.

Wait, so the the teenager who works at Gamestop and was probably born after cartridge games became antiques doesn't know what a pirated NES game looks like? WHO KNEW? I've also heard about Thousands Of Barack Obama's posting very inappropriate comments on RU-vid. So this raises the question, "Who's dumber, the employees of Gamestop, or the guy who actually trusted Gamestop to know what they were doing?"
