I have a basement with only one small window in one room. I want to convert a room in my basement into a games room but I hated the lighting in the room so I went for a more natural light feel.

This is awesome for places where it gets dark early I really love that feeling of natural light and this looks almost identical

As someone living in Canada where it gets dark at like 4:30 PM in the evening, I totally agree. Tricking your brain helps the winter blues.

Thank you for this. I just moved into a windowless bedroom and hopefully I'll have one of these ready by next week. I'll share if it turns out well; otherwise it never sees the light of day.

the curtain diffusing light in all directions, doesn't it cancels the effect of the fresnel lens that makes a directional light ? ( do you notice a big difference w ou w/o the fresnel lens in your setup ?) thanks
@michaelkaybecker
@michaelkaybecker 3 года назад
the curtain doesn’t seem to have a negative effect. there is a fairly big difference without the fresnel lens. with out it, it feels more like over head office lighting which Isn’t very nice.

Is the fresnal lens layered with paper?
@michaelkaybecker
@michaelkaybecker 3 года назад
No, if you go to about 3:25 point in the video I show a “fogged lens” I call it. All TVs along with the fresnel lens will have light defusing layers which have a whitish look to them much like covering the lens with paper but way more effective
@Armonicyila

@michaelkaybecker
@michaelkaybecker 3 года назад
Hey Jenna, I got the lens out of a broken TV I purchased off of Craig’s list. Any HD flat screen TV will have this lens in it. Check Craig’s list or Facebook buy and sell for people selling broken TVs. Disassemble the TV by taking all of the screw out of the back. You will know the lens by the way it looks. It’s a thin floppy plastic sheet that looks like you are looking through water.

it's not really important, but if you're curious, "fresnel" is pronounced without the S sound. it's silent, so you say "frennel". cool project!

@theSFCchannel

You got this idea from DIY perks right? tip you don't just need the frennel layer from the tv you need to use 1x of the ABSORBTION layer also and the acrylic absorption layer too. That way you use diffuse the light slight before it gets to the frennel layer and thus the light is spread more evenly and still looks like the sun without all the negative effects you found . Doing the same on an old broken 60 inch tv
@babixillo

Hi! Amazing video. I just need to ask, can I just buy smaller Fresnel Lens and stock em up to make a big one? Does that work? Thanks!
@michaelkaybecker
@michaelkaybecker Год назад
Yes you could, the reason I went this route is when I started the project I looked for the lenses on Amazon and found them to be very expensive, like $20CAD for a 7” lens.

What did you put the lenses on top of ?
@michaelkaybecker
@michaelkaybecker Год назад
The lens sits on the outer wooden frame and there is a centre post to support the middle of the lens. If you go to the point in the video where the lens is off and you can see the inside of the “window” you will see wha to am talking about (1:19 in the video).

Are those lenses in both LED and LCD tvs?
@michaelkaybecker
@michaelkaybecker 3 года назад
Yes it should be. The difference in the two types of TVs is the actual video screen not the other lenses. I should have mentioned that in the video, if you take a TV apart there are multiple screens and filters, the LED/LCD screen will be a thin glass layer that breaks pretty easily, there will be other filters mostly just thin fogged plastic. You’ll know the fresnel lens by how strange it is to look through, almost like trying to look through water.

@@michaelkaybecker I was thinking just the strength / weakness of sun would control the brightness and mimic what’s happening outside. To be honest I’ve never done anything like this so wouldn’t even know where to start.
@avinersan
@avinersan 2 года назад
@@anthonyb924 in that case just get an optic shaft and it's almost 1/1 with what's happening outside you do lose the control then maybe outside is cloudy for day and you just want the feeling of sunlight again, but you can't do that if it's all natural light

Hi, firstly love to see your room and how you make a fake window. I'm currently looking for a room. And of the room offer is a basement bedroom. So, I would like to ask your opinion, how does it feel like and is it good to stay there for a year or more.
@michaelkaybecker
@michaelkaybecker 2 года назад
I used to lived in a basement suite with only very small windows to make it a legal suite. My opinion is, as long as your space is cozy and comfortable to you, you’ll have no problems. It’s of course important to get out of your place and into the real world and to see the sun.
