I went to Vandenberg on Saturday & shot this video.
Everybody else took the feed.
• Iridium Communications Inc., is the only mobile satellite communications company that offers truly global voice and data communications coverage.
• Iridium’s low Earth orbit (LEO) cross-linked satellites form the world’s largest commercial satellite constellation, operating as a fully meshed network, covering the 80 percent of the globe not covered by terrestrial networks.
• The constellation is orbiting approximately 483 miles above Earth.
• Iridium (NASDAQ: IRDM) is headquartered in McLean, Va., with additional operational centers including the Primary Gateway Earth Station in Tempe, AZ, and the Satellite Network Operations Center (SNOC) in Leesburg, Va.
• A network replacement of this scale is unprecedented, making it the largest tech refresh in the space industry.
Iridium NEXT
• Iridium NEXT is Iridium’s next-generation global satellite constellation that will replace the current network.
• Iridium NEXT is a $3 billion investment. The company is building 81 satellites: 66 will serve as operational satellites. The remaining 15 satellites will serve as in-orbit and ground spares.
• Manufacturing & Assembly
o Iridium has partnered with Thales Alenia Space as the prime
contractor in developing the Iridium NEXT satellites.
o Thales Alenia Space has partnered with Orbital ATK as a sub-
contractor to assemble, test and integrate all 81 new Iridium NEXT
satellites, including the prime hosted payloads.
• Launch Schedule & Logistics
o The first launch is scheduled for January 14, 2017, with a back-up date
of January 15th, on SpaceX’s updated Falcon 9 rocket carrying the first 10 Iridium NEXT satellites, out of Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.
o The subsequent six launches, which are also contracted with SpaceX, will be launching ten Iridium NEXT satellites at a time.
o The traditional Falcon 9 rocket was adjusted in order to accommodate larger payloads, like Iridium NEXT.
o The entire constellation is scheduled for completion in 2018. • Network Capabilities and Functionality
Once fully deployed, Iridium NEXT will enable greater data bandwidth and speeds that will dramatically enhance Iridium’s ability to meet the rapidly expanding needs of the industry on a global scale.
o Iridium NEXT will bring new innovations and solutions to the industry including, but not limited to:
• Iridium CertusSM, enabled by Iridium NEXT, will be a best-in- class, portfolio of communications solutions, that makes up a highly reliable, capable, flexible and global service that meets the connectivity needs of the many and vastly different markets that Iridium serves.
• Aireon LLC’s aircraft tracking and surveillance system will be hosted as an auxiliary payload on each Iridium NEXT satellite. The Iridium NEXT constellation is the only satellite network that can support truly global aircraft surveillance, which is critical to the AireonSM system. The solution is expected to be a fully operational by 2018.

Nice job keeping the rocket centered, and then both the first and second stage in the same FOV for so long.

Thank you! This was my first rocket launch. (excluding a series of Estes rockets) I was impressed by the noise that arrived about about 40 seconds after launch.

Update I went and saw the atlas 5 launch to mars, I went to ocean ave, it was 2 miles from the launchpad and I the rockets sound was incredible, however since it was 4 in the morning the fog cover was too much to see the rocket very well, this link is great for looking for potential viewing sites, remember to make sure which launchpad the launch you are watching is from, web.archive.org/web/20170609214228/www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1eJ71ff_mISR9o8ndMX7nwrvQlTw&hl=en_US&ll=34.66672892512417%2C-120.5664645&z=11 Vandenburg Launch Schedule: www.spacearchive.info/vafbsked.htm

Rudy Deshmukh the closest you can get to launch pad 4 E (SpaceX) is ocean ave and 13th where they set up a road block. As the crow flies it's 4 miles away and you can feel the sound waves from the rocket. You won't be able to see it on the pad but the second it clears the tower you can see it. You can't get to surf beach where you would be able to see falcon 9 on the pad, but get there an hour before hand to get a good parking spot because it can get crowded fast.

wcolby. Are there any special rules for watching a launch? Are there any passes required? How close can you get? Where can you watch from? I'm talking about Vandenberg launches in particular. Thanks !
@wcolby
@wcolby 5 лет назад
Im Just a news photographer, there are people at the station that take care of the complicated stuff. In general, at Vandenberg if you are off the base property you can watch whatever you want. as long as it's not at the train station near the ocean, I believe they close that for launches. To be on base check with the base public affairs office, but I believe they only allow credentialed media on base and there are a lot of hoops to jump through.

This video was taken from the media viewing area that is inside the base. It was honestly weeks of paperwork and security stuff to get on the base. They clear the area near the train station at surf but I understand there are places along Highway one where rocket people can be seen camping out before the launch.

Fascinating. How do they keep rockets upright from takeoff? Like - what's causing it not to tailspin and head right back to earth?
@Chemist4271
@Chemist4271 5 лет назад
Marsorry Ickua same concept as balancing a pencil on your finger, can be done, just difficult. If you wish to know the physics behind it, look up things like center of pressure, center of mass, thrust vector control, and gravity turns. There's lots of great videos on this, Scott Manley has a bunch

It's called Rocket Science and way too involved to try to teach here. Let's just say you can learn a lot if you study gimbled engines and how they work.
@James-vy5ng
@James-vy5ng 5 лет назад
A rocket is a type of inverted pendulum (RU-vid it). For us humans, it's quite difficult to balance things like a pencil on our finger, but robots can do it quite well.
@uberkloden
@uberkloden Год назад
Balance, thrust with vanes directing thrust, gyroscopes, some preprogrammed, some with computers modifying mid flight. Sorry our friends on RU-vid are snobbish.. Also, some of the rocket 😊engines are gimbled.

1) I know that you are weak minded, not because you favor one politician over another, you are weak minded because those politicians have tricked you in to believing that what they do is important. 2) I know this is true because I am a pilot onboard a chemtrail aircraft seeding the earth with microbes that control your brain. (we pilots aren't affected because we live above the chemtrails in mirrored blimps).. 3) You took a rocket launch on youtube and tried to make it political. you will not do that, because I control your right to free speech, I grant and remove free speech, because your politicians can't stop me. to prove you are weak minded and your politicians are powerless without the weak minded follower. I will let your stupid comment sit here for 24 hours, so others can see how stupid you are. When I get back to my mirrored blimp I will remove your comment (I don't have internet on the chemtrail aircraft because we don't want to be tracked by by the government.) Have a blessed day
