Falcon and the Winter Soldier introduced many complex themes on race, wealth inequality, capitalism, and empathy. You know...fun superhero stuff. But when you take a step back and look at the big picture, you can see how all of these varying themes tie together into a deeper meaning.
The show is an examination of where our world meets the Marvel Cinematic Universe. How the legacy of Captain America echoes not just in the MCU, but in our own lives.

He's not the one who needed to learn that message. That is the message he is trying to teach. He wants to make sure the rest of the world will see him by the content of his character. That's why he says "black falcon? So are you black kid?" Meaning he's asking why is it black first? Why isn't Hawkeye called white Hawkeye? Why if the character is black do we usually add in "black" before their name? Why is it race first if you are non-white hero? The beautiful thing is he teaches it well.

You made a few awkward choices there (that white guy was non-white? Walker never questioned his activities? A non-white nation victimizing non-whites based on ethic divides, not racial divides, is an example of racism?), but the show also made a lot of odd choices trying to preach the same messages (as you rightly pointed out, Sam's speech was supposed to be "don't just dismiss them with a label," but when the whole series comes off as him siding with the terrorist, flying her corpse out to make sure her martyrdom is captured while his white ally bleeds out, the "don't call her a terrorist" just makes Sam seem like a sympathizer, and his hollow "do better" following it just makes him seem too small minded). Overall, not a bad video, but I finally gave up when you got to the bank part, where the bank manager gives completely legitimate, non-race related justification for turning Sam down for a loan (no verifiable income for half a decade, recently dead, a lending risk) and Sam's sister and you both came to the "that's racism" conclusion.... big smooth brain, vicitm mentality energy there. All in all, there were a few missed swings here, just like the show. I really wish they hadn't scrapped the initial plot, as I think those changes resulted in a lot of the stumbles that distracted from what otherwise was a great miniseries.

@mzittel97
@mzittel97 3 года назад
Tbh, I think this falls short of imoortant pieces of nuance in the show. Sam holds principles higher than any person. That's why he served in the armed forces and then fought alongside Cap even when the establishment was against him. He believes the American values are exceptional just like Steve Rodgers did. But part of believing in the exceptional values of America is questioning America when the nation doesn't stand true to them, as Steve Rodgers did. Thus Sam takes a stance against the violent ANTIFA-like open border extremist Flag Smashers and the corrupt ego-centric political establishment.

One of my favorite lines in the show is "the legacy of the shield is complicated." Yeah really, its entire legacy is being wielded by one of the MCU's most righteous characters who also picked up Mjolnir. Oh and he comes to terms with being Captain America because hes the first BLACK Captain America, as if thats why Steve gave it to him. He gave Falcon the shield because they were friends, he trusted him. Wtf does his skin colour have to do with it all of a sudden.

What has America done in the last 50 years towards black americans besides give them advantages no other race has, such as affirmitive action? We are all one people and the sooner people stop living in a past they were never a part of, the better. I'm of mixed race with friends of all colors, but I can't stand these divisive narratives. I literally had a friend last week, who is black, get a job, and he was told during the interview that they were excited to have him come aboard because he can bring "black" business to the company. I was happy he is now employed, but what happened to hiring people based on character, qualifications, and personality? Equality works all ways, and it isn't right to make our white friends feel like they are lesser than simply because the color of the skin they were born with. We don't want to be grouped into a box based on our color, so why do it to others?

To be fair, Walker did question whether to take the serum through his conversation with Lemar. I didnt see white supremacist in him, I saw a soldier mindset I.e. complete the mission. He was showing cracks due to trauma he experienced in war but ultimately, despite the serum that amplified his instability, he done the right thing when given the choice to save lives or destroy Karli. Just my opinion. Enjoyed the video
@adrianwehunt8033
@adrianwehunt8033 3 года назад
I agree, somewhat. It bothers me that John Walker is labeled a Supremacist, and I don’t see the parallels: To me, John Walker is a deeply flawed, deeply insecure man with a lot to prove. This weight on his shoulders is what causes him to do the horrible deeds he does here. He is a soldier, and he was given the title of Captain America, and thus, he has been given authority, but instead of recognizing and respecting that power, with humility and empathy, he demands respect and attempts to brute force the world to get his way. The serum only amplified those insecurities, and drove him over the edge. I can’t speak to the effects war has had on him, but I do know inferiority and a bruised ego when I see it, and John Walker is a great example of a good man struggling with insecurity, self-doubt and ego, and trying to compensate with anger and aggression.
@afroditevapes435
@afroditevapes435 3 года назад
Supremacist in this case doesn't mean evil racist. If you watch his interactions, he tries to interrogate a man but doesn't bother to make sure there is no language barrier, then goes all in when he doesn't immediately get an answer. Secondly, the way he momentarily disregards the Dora Milaje, even after he gets his butt kicked. He says "they're not even super soldiers" he automatically assumed that he should have beat them. He doesn't say wow those soldiers are really well trained. The supremacy is the automatic assumption that HE is in the right because of who he is, and the country he represents. It's not white supremacy. It's white male American entitlement which is a complete disregard or lack of attempt to understand anything and anyone that doesn't agree or fit within his ideals and preconceived notions at an international level. He takes his limited world view, and applies ot to every other person he encounters while completely disregarding others (or not even considering) any other ways of thinking or being. He feels that because America chose him and he feels that America is the greatest and righteous country, he is superior (that is supremacy) . He has many conscious and unconscious biases. It's not a supremacy based on race but on superiority. And this is backed by those who don't hold him accountable (no jail time for murdering an unarmed man in public but stripped of his job and title) what did his "punishment" do? It allowed him to now do the same things without the government red tape. Now he can be contracted out as US Agent, by the same people in power and still not be held accountable. And he still blames everyone but himself for killing he did.
@taxult
@taxult 2 года назад
@@afroditevapes435 Unlike the Dora Milaje he actually has official government (and not just by the U.S) mandate to apprehend Zemo, but some random bald black ladies pop out of nowhere and demand one of the (if not the most wanted) person on Earth, and somehow they're able to defeat the best U.S soldier, the Winter Soldier, and an Avenger all at the same time. He says "they're not even super soldiers" not because of arrogance but because of failure, he's been getting his ass kicked by everyone and pushed away by both Falcon and Bucky for no fucking reason when he wants to work with them and now he can't even defeat non super soldiers, this gets him to a point where he doesn't believe he's worthy which from his discussion with Lamar, gets him to use the serum to finally be on equal grounds to fight the non trained but serumed peaceful protestors.

Stan Lee also said that the comics should be fun first. Funny how people always leave that part out. That said, I absolutely love this show. Battlestar would have been a better choice to take the serum! He was basically the same level of badass warfighter as Walker, but he had a conscience. Battlestar was basically Walkers conscience... many times in the show, he was the voice of reason to Walker and stopped him from doing things that were morally questionable and giving in to his darker side. When battlestar was killed, that was like John Walker losing his conscience and morality. That was the point where Walker fully devolved into a killer and started acting out.

Thank you for looking deeper into this show! It deserves the same deep analysis as many other works in this genre- but, sadly, isn't getting it. I'm afraid that there is a lack of close examination because it hits home a little too much. But, that's what makes this show and the original comic so important. It transcends its medium.

Excellent!! Thank you for posting this very clear message! It's one that isn't pointed out enough, IMO. I, too, learned of the Tulsa Massacre in the Watchmen, and loved the return reference in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.

I feel so bad for the rift created between these guys like bucky and cap missed all of the struggles and civil rights movements that highlighted the race issues and struggles so it was literally impossible for them to consider Sam's race when selecting him...like you know they would have considered it but they didn't know. And they were too good of men to see a problem with it because they didn't see his color. They saw his worthiness.

Hey Ryan been a long time viewer but this is my first comment. I just needed to show my appreciation for you detailed and concise explantion of the show. The content of all your summaries of episodes are a true companion to the show and this one in particular just enccapsulates everything in brillaint form. Well done man and keep on keeping on.

I justed watched your Wandavison plot holes and unanswered questions video but here are some that makes no sense to me. 1. Is Wanda is the Scarlett Witch bc she is "special" or bc she was already a witch and just got an upgrade form an mind stone/infinity stone? If that is the case then would any other witch that is exposed to the mind stone or infinity stone become the SW? 2. Wanda has always been a witch but is it genetic although we didn't see anything from her parents? 3. We know Wanda always had her powers she was always a witch the mind stone just juiced them up we know that, but what about Pietro if he's not a wizard or warlock how did he not only get his powers and survive the experiments? From the Canon book to Wakanda Files by Shuri it says the Hydra didn't randomly choose Sokovia but they chose it bc ppl there had "genetic anomalies" Marvel didn't go with the mutant route which would have explained this so what was Pietro? 4. Can Wanda be both a witch and a sorceress or use many types of magic? Bc sorcerers are both male and female they use eldritch magic (not sure if that's the only type they can use) they form shapes and patterns and it's yellow. Wandavison introduced witches, witches are female like Agatha and her coven they just have colors glowing energy around their hands but no shapes and it's blue except for Agatha's maybe bc she stole magic idk but Wanda a witch uses Chaos magic bc she's the SW probably why it's red but Kevin Feige said that Wanda is using Doctor Strange's type of magic except and since she's not trained that's why it didn't form the shapes and patterns so will they like merge her into a witch sorceress? Billy is definitely going to return bc of Young Avengers would he be a wizard, warlock or sorcerer?

4. Wanda is the only character within Marvel who can receive the three designations. >WITCH: She can be considered a witch thanks to her family, the Maximoffs, a family of ancient witches who pass the mantle of "Scarlet Wizard" to future generations. > SORCERER: Despite her latent gifts in her genetics, Wanda learned other types of magic that she did not have in her DNA during her training with Agatha Harkness, dominating from there the white, black and Celtic magic, and even learned to nullify the asgardian magic. After being born, Wanda was blessed by Chton, a very ancient and powerful mystical entity who gave her the gift of chaos magic.

12:35 - NO, I'm sure that was NOT what Sam was Thinking, I don't believe Sam saw Cap as "a white man" but rather as a friend who was an "Exceptionally Good Man" and for what ever internal reason Sam has, he doesn't "feel" he lives up to it, as we see explored in this show. OTHERS such as Isaiah, see what you say and attempt to weigh Sam down with their own interpretations of how we ought to see the Flag, the Country, or even Captain America. Luckily, by the end Sam forges his own path and becomes the ICON correctly as an Equally Good Man, sans the serum. This is MY Captain America!
