This falconry video describes the difference between hooding a bird, and hood training a bird. Both techniques are valuable, but not many falconers take the time to actually hood train their bird. This video describes how this is achieved.

You're really great at explaining things! Also appreciate that you take the time to think about and understand the bird's psychology. Fantastic videos!!

Your videos are amazing. You take out a lot of the mystery out of falconry that only comes with experience.

Awesome information, next video on training big falcons for waiting on ... please!

Gurwinder Rai I will try to get one up soon. I’d prefer to do one where I can demonstrate it with footage more than relying on just talking about it from a chair. So I will try to get a video up about it, but might be better information if I wait a few months and get field footage.

Your videos are really good for real. You explain things very well, it really shows how well you know your subject and we can see the experience you have threw your words. Plus you seem to have a really really good ethology approach, understanding the mind set of birds that is such different than our mine set. Really looking forward on having a bird and I've been watching lots of your content. Even tho here in Europe the approach towards falconry is a bit different the content is still relevant. Thanks and keep up the good work.

Very helpful video thank you! You mentioned its the same thing in all vertebrate life! But some inverts do the exact same thing. Tarantulas do a defensive curl to protect their bodies and carapace! Figured I'd throw in that fun fact. Have a wonderful day

I wish I'd known this information when I was training my Redtailed Hawk. I tried to get him to the hood but it was causing a detrimental effect with trust. I had to abandon the idea. Great video Ben.

Hi Ben, excellent job! I'd like to share your videos with a couple friends but they just don't speak English, do you know if it's possible to set spanish subtitles to them?

I could help with this of it hasn’t been done yet. The only problem would be some of the lingo. Carlos, sabes la terminología? Me gustaría aprenderla en mi lengua madre.

Is it possible to design the drawstrings of the hood so that your index finger and thumb will do the tightening and loosing of the hood?

My first Year Goshawk has a Problem with its Travelbox. He jumps into, no Problem but out is the Problem. I want to try it with the Hood next Season. I tried earlier, he accepted the Hood at some Point. I can touch him at his Chest with the Hood but when I attempt to put the Hood over hier Head he jumps off the Fist. Then I canceled that, because I don't want to destroy the Bond with him.

You certainly took quite a scientific approach to this! I'm not the type of guy that would want to hood my birds, but I figured, well, I could still learn something from this! As different as a bird of prey's mind is compared to ours, I would still want a hawk to always know what's going on at all times! I know in my own mind, if I closed my eyes and I was in a different place all of a sudden, I'd be like, "Where am I, what happened?" I also know that when birds of prey are relaxed, they don't care where they are after the hood comes off. The important thing is that they are more relaxed than they were before, assuming that it was done in the correct situations as you explained! The concept of placing the hood up and down many times while sitting on the couch is certainly useful in the unlikeli-"hood" that I use a hood! And about the "giant" hood. I'll rather just call it is a travel box. It doesn't need any other name! That'll be my main tool of not ruining the trust of a hawk!

I dont know if anyone could answer this, but I have a Eurasian kestrel, (im in uk) and he doesnt mind the hood, but ive stopped training him as the first time i drew the braces he hung his head and looked like he was going to fall off my hand, i was a bit alarmed, just wondered if this was normal the first few times.
