Falconry: Intro to Gyr falcons 

Agreed. Enormously helpful to me too but for a different reason! We just bought a cabin in Alaska and it’s on a Gyrfalcon Drive. I just wanted to know how to say it, but I ended up watching and enjoying the whole video!

Can you please name the author of the book so I can read it too?

Noah Morris if you have the choice, I’d do a social imprint over a chamber raised bird for your first gyr. You will swear a lot less that way 😁 hope you get one! They are incredible

@@benwoodrufffalconry Thank you for the wisdom on gyrs. I've never been able to really learn about them. neither my sponsor nor other falconers I know have ever bothered to use them.

​@benwoodrufffalconry yes you must. Those like me who love falcons but have no opportunity to have . . it's a comfort to be part of falconry by your generous sharing. Banned in Australia, we are not even allowed to have as a pet.

StoneE4 actually, I have hunted canal ducks with them before. I have flown a male and two females. They aren’t good falconry birds, but they can do it. People always mock the idea. And yet in New Zealand the only raptor they can hunt with is harriers! Let me think on the best way to go about it and maybe I’ll make a video. A lot of haters will rip on it, but it is still fascinating. Thank for the great suggestion!

​@@benwoodrufffalconry - Maybe this is a myth, but I've read that there was a time when a lot of people mocked the idea of hunting with a harris hawk. 🤷‍♂️ If you decide not to do a video on the harrier maybe you could do a general video on what makes some birds worse than others for falconry. The harrier has always fascinated me by the way they hover with, what appears to be, such little effort. They remind me of big, owl-faced hummingbirds with talons. 😄 Anyway, thanks for the consideration.

You won’t find many harriers on a grouse more ask a gamekeeper.

Falcons being sprayed or even soaked during the manning process puts them into a trance same way it calms down Race horses. A falcon will sit for hours with its wings open drying itself and preening “Putting itself back together”. I’ve never seen a wet falcon “Bate” from the block. Duck legs with the meat stripped off work wonders and keep him busy for hours and give him mental stimulation and keeps the mandible worn down also builds up muscle in the legs and neck. Put your stripped off duck legs on the block first then bring your falcon from the mews to the block tied to the glove take your time never let the falcon see you bring him food or he will start screaming. When a falcon is wet on the block is also a good time to walk around him with the dog and get him used to everything taking advantage of this window.
