A few flights from this week. by Steve Chindgren
Some of you might wonder why the dog is walking around me while I am casting off the falcon. I call the dog off the point he comes back and we move a good distance away. This allows me time to be relaxed and get the falcon to a good pitch before I send him back out to point the birds. It works perfect no more premature flushes while the bird is still mounting!

That's interesting seeing the way you bend down to the ground so that your Peregrine Falcon was only a few inches from the ground so that you could entice him to fly! I've seen many Falconers just thrust their glove outward to force the raptor to fly! Your dog already knew what prey was out there before the Falcon even knew. Once your dog got all jumpy, that was your Falcon's signal to take off!

Beautiful shots and scenes. I really appreciate your comment on never hurrying the falcon to take off. I feel the same way: throwing a hawk off your fist is like shoving a visiting friend out your door.

Nice to see a honest review of your falcons habits be it good or bad . As alway great to watch your falcons hunt grouse and see the difference in size of your English pointers compared to England.

All of your videos are a treat. Heard so much about you as a falconer, never thought that we would be able to see this up close and personal. Thank you-

Love your videos Steve! My hybrid is terrible about landing. We're trying to work through it but success has eluded us so far. Put her up for 2 weeks, and im hoping to start over tomorrow after a little break to reset. I hope your season is going well!

Very interested in lowering the glove to ground level. I raise my hand above my head and stand there like a clown! I will certainly try this for a peregrine of mine that is very slow to go. I also will not cast off because invariably this falcon lands.

I fly two intermewed Jerkins, and they are completely different. One is a pleasure in every way, and the other is a jerk.

That big puff of feathers from the initial contact of the hawk and the prey... Is that from the shear impact of the strike? The hawk grasping feathers and ripping them out of the prey? Both? Something else?

@@stevesomach : 125 mph, eh? Well, I guess that would do it. 😏 By the way, I'm really enjoying your videos. 👍

Wondering if anyone has experimented with unhooding falcons long before intended release so that their eyes adjust to the bright sunlight? Could it be the sudden brightness requires a falcon's eyes time to acclimate before a falcon takes wing? Then again Arab falconers unhood their birds and immediately toss them out the window at game. Why the different behavior between tail chase and high pitch falcons when unhooded?

Raptors eyes are incredibly adapted, and so short answer is there eyes adjust immediately. Long answer is because of special muscles their eyes dilate or expand much, much faster than most other animals, including humans. By the time they're unhooded, they basically can already see. One side affect of the large eyes/muscles is there eyes are almost stationary in their head, so they have to swivel and bob their head to see different angles. Hope this helps

nice Steve! It almost looked like one of them bound to the grouse's legs in one of those shots - is that right?
