February 8, 2019. The Utah Sky Trials are a week away, and Steve is freshly back from a trip overseas... In order to bring his birds up to par for the trials he exercises them by flying them up to a reward attached to the drone.
The legal altitude limit for drones is 400 feet. Always obey state and federal laws when operating drones, kites, balloons, space shuttles, rockets, jet-airliners, blimps, helicopters, guided missiles, catapult projectiles, Pterodactyls, and birds of prey.*

From the thumbnail I thought this guy looks familiar! Yep I was right, He's my parents neighbor. Same house I grew up in. I remember him having bald eagles -as pets- that were flightless. He kept them healthy and provided a quality life versus being put down. I just remember thinking how crazy it is he has bald eagles

@@gradywright Yeah I know, I watched those videos. There was one out of 1986 I think that was pretty good, it showed a lot of falconers that I knew back then. But I'm sure he has a lot more older footage in his vault. OSH :-)

I’ve seen Steve fly his birds a few times at the Sky Trials. How cool you were able to talk with him. I’ve tried but always feel a bit “Star” struck.

I've been using the kite and helium balloon method for years to get my jerkins in shape. I need to upgrade to the drone! When fit, a gyr can climb like nothing else. Love your videos. Not bad for an "old guy".

the hawks in my neighborhood follow my quads around anyway. I just fly back and forth, not too fast, and they seem to want to follow, I see them pass by after I've made my turns, it's fun. The vultures like the quads too.

I am curios about your Foxtech Hover 1 drone. Did you build the drone, or did you have it built? What's your opinion of this drone for this use? What kind of flight time are you getting and with what size battery? Thanks!

Even Steve got driven out of Utah by development...and is reliant on a very unique and remote area. the trends in habitat loss and population decline have made it MUCH harder for new falconers to successfully enter the practice of flying a large falcon on wild game..

That drone technique would potentially work with a Caracara. Play to their natural proclivity to piracy. I'm honestly really surprised that nobody uses Caracaras for snakes and other small reptiles. Also, would Northern Harriers be any good? They're certainly impressive to watch hunt, and I wouldn't mind having a bird that specializes in small mammals. Would help clear out the fields. If only Osprey had a suitable temperament. I would love to go bass fishing with one. Oh to dream
@FalconryTold
@FalconryTold 5 лет назад
matt R “good” for falconry is subjective, classic falconry is usually about upland game birds & rabbits and such, so for classic game, insectivorous & reptile dieting raptors are obviously not preferred.
@mattr2238
@mattr2238 5 лет назад
@@FalconryTold I just mean for fun and utility. Kinda like a terrier vs a coonhound I guess. I was more referring to temperament and trainability. I'm not a falconer yet, so sorry if I'm being an annoying newb.
@FalconryTold
@FalconryTold 5 лет назад
We’ve all had those same questions at some point and many have trained these birds, but yeah they’re not “falconry” birds that’s for sure.
@mattr2238
@mattr2238 5 лет назад
@@FalconryTold That's a great way of putting it! If you start broadening the definition of falconry to include any trained carnivorous bird, then falconry would include people who rehab vultures and corvids. If someone could get a Caracara to hunt upland game (highly unlikely) then it would be falconry in that instance, but it would not make Caracaras in general falconry birds. Am I correct?
@FalconryTold
@FalconryTold 5 лет назад
matt R the Google definition of falconry works pretty well, the purpose of the sport is hunting. So that includes taking grasshoppers with a Kestrel, snakes with a RedShouldered Hawk, lizards and such with a Harrier, whatever. But classic falconry has not considered that falconry for thousands of years, as it is no longer very “sporting.” There’s not much of a pursuit/hunt when a hawk catches a snake, or a kestrel catches a beetle.

Philip Hernandez hunting, but as drone flying isn’t hunting, they get to run around after the falcons are done anyways; it’s good for them to exercise too.
