Great video and tips, Dave! We’ve got a female HH who has been a screamer. She’ll be 2 soon and it’s getting better, especially during the molt. Our neighbors have been fabulously patient (we had a catered open-house [with plenty of beer & wine LOL] a month after we got her to introduce her and explain about screaming). From the start we’ve spent lots of time with her on walks, in the sun room, in the garden and none of that has to do with food. We got her out hunting within a few weeks and are out several times a week. We do have a routine on non-hunting days, and there’s one positive side effect of that: She goes very calmly into her mews all other times of the day when we’ve had her out - it’s only during the lunch hour when she gets over-eager, bating, some screaming and feeping on the way back to the mews because she knows she’ll be getting food. A week ago she abruptly stopped screaming, and then I started to worry about what was wrong! 😂

When I volunteered, it was the rescued kestrels . Yet I actually liked them otherwise .

I don’t think I’m alone here Dave when I feel a video purely of your bird call impressions would be great to watch, over and over 😊

Kites! The white tails have a nice "keep-keep" call but they also have a banshee squawk when they're demanding food from their parents. Pretty odd that kites species are not related but somehow still all have decent calls, they don't even fly or eat or hunt the same but they all can talk better. I used to would call the white tail, send them back telling them to "do it again" or send them to a different perch, pretty much trying to get two flights for a reward, I know the rule is four seconds to train the reaction but it usually worked, at least before the food came out. I reckoned if I had to call them I wanted them to not feel bad if I didn't have anything. The cleaning and furniture maintenance and manning is where the guaranteed meals were. That's a true pet, sadly, literally pick them up and give them pats before it's time to eat.

The advice you gave about not having a routine is literally advice I've seen parrot trainers give to people with parrots. Noise with parrots is just as bad, if not more, considering their voices can be louder than a gunshot. A lot of advice with parrot training seems to have an overlap or contrast in falconry too, how fascinating! Birds will be birds. I don't have any birds of my own yet but I work with both raptors and a parrot in a remote falconry centre in the countryside. I love the noise there, I would never consider getting my own bird if I had immediate neighbours. Animals who are designed to communicate with one another across miles of forest are simply not built for suburbs. This is an excellent video that lots of people need to watch.

Cor blimey yes parrots really are loud!! Interesting as I don't know much about them other than the time they need ... cheers for that comment

@@falconry.davesharpenatureboy They're actually pretty closely related to falcons and caracaras, so they're fascinating from that POV! They need a ton of time, and they're really smart and have mouths made for breaking shells of nuts, so I handle our parrot with the same caution I do our eagles! There's also a lot of overlap with food/weight management - getting a parrot on a healthy diet and weighing them to check how receptive they'll be to a training session is a big part of it, learning both at once has been really interesting. Different but similar in curious ways!

@@rookbirdblues I had forgotten caracara were in Falconidae, some showed up here a few weeks ago, at first they were all happy and flappy (they're big birds), then the kites started to bully them off the top branches. They genuinely don't seem the best neighbors to have. Imagine this herculean tucan-falcon comes and sits on your bed at the crack of dawn and starts opening up all your food. Then tries to eat your baby when your not looking.

Intersting ; I know a fair few fly them. Is for displays etc and I guess themselves

@@falconry.davesharpenatureboy It's also just really good for the birds mental and physical health, in a similar way to hunting with raptors - makes them very fit and lets them burn some energy! But it is a totally different beast, we're going to try free flight training our parrot for experiences for people who maybe don't like chick guts, haha.

I was told I had created screamer before I had even had mine for a week lol. Woody knows my car as I come through the gate he calls, so clever how he knows im taking him out, only calls once consisting of 5 little calls. The good thing about noisy birds they are hopefully are quiet in the summer in moult when most neighbours are in their gardens. Brilliant video Dave thoroughly enjoyed it whilst listening about karens day.

Hi Dave Good info, I must have been lucky next to no noise but my male foots the carry box door if he doesn't get fed on the last pest control job. Your just dropping off to sleep after a gourmet sandwich my by my wife's fare hand and he foots the door bloody annoying 😅. All joking aside thanks for making the video Dave may help in the future 👍

If you want a nosey HH, just don't spend much time with it. Nothing seems to trigger vocalisation faster than a bird on it's own.
