Grab a cup of tea (or whatever you like to drink :) ) and let's start talking about falconry! You all had so many questions, so over three videos I'm going answer as many as possible.
This video, focuses on a bit of an introduction about me, how I started learning, and what falconry is. There's some lovely video and photos throughout.
The next two videos will be about:
- My daily work with my birds
- Hunting with birds of prey
Remember that the laws and rules around falconry are different in each country. I am based in England, and here we fly captive bred birds of prey for falconry. If you are interested in getting involved in falconry please check the rules in your country first!
You can learn more about falconry, its history and examples of awesome wild raptor conservation here:

I only recently learned that the term 'fed up' comes from falconry for when a trained hawk has eaten its fill. When a bird is 'fed up' it is unwilling to fly and hunt for the falconer. Hence, to be 'fed up' means you are no longer interested in doing something 🖐😉

The original comment about "fed up" being related to falconry is incorrect. It derives from animal husbandry, and refers to an animal being fed until it is full. The falconry definition probably comes from this usage, but is not from where subsequent usage descends. You're such a natural in front of camera. Organized storyteller and clear communicator. Any museum, zoo, aviary, or falconry school would be very lucky to get you on board. I'm so excited that you're doing these AMAs and telling us a bit about yourself and falconry in general. You know, RU-vid just decided to start showing your videos to everyone and for once the algorithm was clearly right. Boop Boop.

"I spend my days avoiding people..." - big fat mood. Lol Hi Amy, lovely to meet you. Thank you for the QnA. It was really informative. When the video got to the wildlife conservation part, I realized why I enjoy your videos. Here in my corner of the world, there is a wildlife conservation center that aims ( struggles actually) to increase the population of my country's national bird, the Philippine eagle. They're critically endangered, sadly. I've been to that center several times since I was a kid. I have seen the guardians handle their birds during the educational exhibitions. That was probably my first encounter with falconry in a way. And I remember just having this happy feeling seeing those birds fly. I never really thought about that. But then I stumbled on to your channel and seeing you do your thing with your birds evoked this pleasant feeling. What I didn't realize until now was all this time, watching you interact with your birds was actually stirring up happy memories of a not-so-distant past. I think I'll visit that center again...after this whole nightmare of a Covid is over of course. Boop boop

Sitting here after a rough day at work really enjoying your video. This video really helped relax me and made me forget for a bit all that's going on and I really needed that. You went from this shy teenager, to a wonderful teacher, speaker spokeswoman. It's like being there right in front of you having this wonderful conversation and learning so much from an expert that breaks it down where anyone can understand. I thoroughly enjoyed learning so much about falconry and your love for all your animals. I'm excited for the second video. I highly recommend this channel. Thank you so much!

Thank you for sharing your birds, your dogs and your interests with us. In the US we are not aware and/or exposed to falconry or to get to know about the lives of intelligent birds such as yours. Especially Fable has such a bond and affection for you and there is an intensity that you show while caring for all of your beautiful animals.

Just make friends with a wild crow or raven! I put a dog door in my window for the two crows that visit me a few times a day. One of them had a broken wing last year, I set up a trap, captured it... got bitten a few times lol, then fixed the broken wing, ever since then they've been my bum roommates, kinda like a pet that takes care of itself! I give them worms I collect from my yard as treats. P.S. They can be devilish at times so beware.

Cats are the only breed of animals we did not tame. We, humans, got tamed.. BY THEM. Lol. The reason they dont do 'tricks' as well as dogs is not because they are too stupid: they just dont see the point of following your orders. Then give you orders.

Thank you for yet another interesting video! You are a great educator and your videos will help thousands of people and birds. I had no idea I would be this interested in a series of videos about falconry. I love ravens, so it was your first video about Fable that found its way to my recommended list. But it was your teaching skills that kept me watching and made me subscribe. (As a retired teacher trainer, I always get excited when I stumble across great material... ;-) I must admit I had a very negative view opinion of falconry, having seen a tourist gimmicky version abroad many years ago and some RU-vid videos about people in America capturing wild birds and and turning it into some cool macho stuff for views only to release the bird when they realise the birds require a commitment. What you are doing is so far removed from that and I can literally feel your care for your birds seep through the screen. Can't wait for the next video! I was going to say I was looking forward to seeing morevof Fable, but then I realised I want more of everything. 🤗 Including you! You really are great and I'm glad you decided to make your channel broader and allow yourself to have a spot too. 🦅🦉😊🐓🐤

I could easily have watched another hour of this. Fascinating and so great to see that you managed to make your passion your work. I too spent much of my youth being yelled at for the various beasts I brought home (I think the rabbit picked up off the side of the road , in the middle of a storm at 11 pm at night was something of a watershed lol). I ended up being involved in animal rescue and had many rescued cats and dogs and rats and birds over the years, but I never managed to figure out how to mingle passion and life......and yes, I’d rather be with animals than people too. When I was a kid I was obsessed with birds. One day my Dad found a baby starling that had fallen out of its nest and was being stalked by a cat. So, naturally, we rescued it. I brought it to a pet store where they educated us about starlings and how to feed him. He was so little i had to feed him by hand with droppers. As he got older I switched him to solids and he'd hunt bugs and free fly outside. He used to follow me around the house like a dog, and was so smart he could open his cage door and cause all kinds of mischief. Then one day, he flew away. I was sad, but also knew it was natural for a wild bird to return back to the wild eventually. He came back the next day, squawking at me for food and snuggles. Then he flew away again, and a few days later, we ran into each other on the other side of the block. The last time he flew away, he never came back. Thank you for reminding me of that beautiful relationship, and reigniting my love of birds! I'm mildly obsessed with befriending my neighborhood corvids and other birds now, and dreaming of my own farm/aviaries!

I'm a huge lover of animals and some of my favorites happen to be birds, specifically owls, humming birds and Ravens. Once I realized years ago how smart some of these birds are, it fascinated me and made me a huge lover of crows (I live in Seattle) and how smart they are. I enjoy feeding the crows at work. Keep your videos going, I love them, and I also agree with other comments of saying you're a natural in front of the camera, you do such a great job, keep it up!

In the State of California, an Apprentice falconer may possess for falconry purposes no more than one wild or captive-bred Red-tailed hawk or American kestrel, only as long as the raptor in possession is trained in the pursuit of game and used in hunting. I envy so much the freedom from the birds, even leopards being my fav animal (hahaha). Best wishes from Brazil again! 🦉💚

Thank you for sharing. In Australia we have lots of birds of prey including our huge wedge tails. When I was girl farmers shot the birds because they argued they took the lambs. Everyone knew this was rubbish but it took us a long time to put protection into place. So I love seeing the wedgetails in pairs now and yes you see them scouting out food. But we also have lots of kites, hawks and falcons, as well as eagles and owls. So it's lovely now to see them often and you'll see people craning their necks out of cars to watch them. But there isn't a lot if falconry here where I am. So again thank you for the videos. It's great to see them up close and personal.

Yesss! Soaring pairs of Wedgies high above, on thermals light. Hunting down their prey with telescopic sight Returning to their chicks with loving touch, so light. If one could look them in the eye, and see there, Bright!

Excellent questions and interesting and informative answers! Although I don't know you, the question about how the birds changed your life makes me think that they helped you get over your shyness because you don't seem a bit shy to me! And neither do you seem shy in all those pics with your birds where you are showing your awesome falconry skills to all those people. Now, on to Part Two....

Lurrrve your channel! On my commute into London from Kent I look out for Buzzards and Kestrels mostly and usually will see them on the odd day, perched on a tree or fence post. Have never seen a wild Raven or Peregrine although I’d love to. x

Don't comment on your video editing skills! You are amazing. Next to being a very natural in front of the camera, you are also very good in thinking about angles and lighting. I love your down to earth manner in treating the birds and telling stories. Keep it up! 💖

Thank you so much for taking the time to making these Videos. I very much enjoy them. Despite the fact that I am not a Falkner or any nearby profession. (Carpenter) But I lived on an old farm with various animals and garden and my woodshop for several years. Watching the wildlife and birds - and squirrels collecting the Walnuts - always will have a fond place in my Memory... Great info and interesting topic. Greetings from lower Saxony, Germany 👌👍👍

I really loved this video! Can't wait for the next part! After watching it, I have huge respect for you that you managed to fit a 46-minute video (and I know you spend much more on time than on this video) in your busy schedule. It's so funny that your parents thought this would be just a phase, and I think it's a great lesson for all the parents to never underestimate teenage obsessions. When it comes to the lack of restrictions for falconers in the UK, it's what I was very interested in after your video introducing Flynn. Do you think having some regulations could help with preventing those kinds of situations? Tying back to your historical falconry I would love to see you collab with English Heritage!
