A walk around Falkirk, visiting the tomb of Sir John de Graham, Callendar House, the Falkirk Tunnel, Union Canal, the Falkirk Wheel, Forth & Clyde Canal, and The Kelpies.
Thanks for sharing this. I live just by the Union Canal and the tunnel more or less runs under my house. It’s great to see the local area being explored and explained. Great video!
There is an old grave yard in the woods at Callander park Roman bath remains and an old tomb that not many known about loved visiting there with my family as kids
That would be the tomb where the family who lived in the house were laid to rest. I walk my dog up past it regular. It's down the other end of the pond from the house up in the woods
Over on the embankment across from the front of the house there is an old ice house that was used when the house was occupied. You can go inside it still. You see it clearly from the entrance to the house. It has a stone doorway into the side of the embankment
Very interesting I come from Falkirk and I've just learned a few more facts about Falkirk that I didn't know I used to go in to callander house years ago when it was derelict looking for the green lady
The Kelpies are impressive! Too bad I only saw them from the bus. Again, your December looks like October here. We're already burried in 2 feet of snow here combined with -20 degrees temperature. I'm curious. What type of camera you travel with?
Very wet mist at one point during the walk; I should have put in a request for dry mist. At The Kelpies it coated the camera lens and the camera thought it should focus on the lens droplets instead of what I was looking at. It's a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX400. Excellent camera with very good image stabilisation. Stay warm.
You can see the Falkirk Tunnel in a little more detail in my recent Linlithgow to Falkirk video. It's very close to Falkirk High Railway Station. Take care.
For the time that the tunnel was built, it is considered to be an achievement as it was carved out of stone. We call it the miley as it is close to being one mile in length. I used to cycle through it twice a day going to and from work. It's not for the faint hearted on a bike. The towpath is very worn at the edges next to the water. There was a few times my back wheel got caught in a rut and nearly flew into the canal
You should go to the laughing and greeting bridge at glen village I remember going through the tunnel at canal when there was no lights was pretty eerie
I've got picture in ma phone ae the Laughin Greetin Bridge. One side has a laughing face and the other side a greetin face. The bridge signifies the meeting point where the 2 teams met each other when the canal was built. This was the half way point. The greetin face was the side that had to dig the tunnel and the laughing face was the side that didn't have to make the tunnel
Ed Explores Scotland Next time your in Falkirk Ed, drop by my house for a cup of tea and a good old historical natter. Make sure it’s summertime though.., 😀
