Come along on a journey to the bottom of the earth on my two week trip to the Falkland Islands. I assembled this video to show you what I saw and hopefully, I can make you feel, at least a little bit, the way I did when leaving the Falklands.
And for those of you who might not know that much about the Falkland Islands, I also added a real brief history of the islands and a little bit about the Falklands War.
The Falkland Islands are one of those rare places left where you can escape the modern world. Located 300 miles to the east of the bottom tip of South America. Their remote location has left the Falklands a place for one of a kind wildlife encounters.
Of all the places we’ve visited in recent years the Falklands are unlike any of the others - and I think that is was what I grew to love about the Falklands the most.
For more info on the Falklands check out our blog post: www.gettingstamped.com/falkla...

I find is astonishing just how similar the Falklands are to the west coast of Scotland. Apart from the colourful tin roofs, the penguins and the sea lions there would be no way of telling them apart. The climate and clouds, the gorse, the sheep, the colour of the grass and silver sand, the type of rock, the heather and peat (I didn’t even know peat existed outside of Scotland!), the what we would call “lochans” basically small ponds in the peat, the cold, deep blue of the water and the white foam when it crashes over the yellow lichen covered coastline, the empty sandy beaches and dunes, the species of seaweed, the old land rovers bumping over tiny moorland tracks, and even the windswept fences crisscrossing the landscape. Fascinating.

You’re right they are very special. I was fortunate enough to be deployed to the Falklands on three occasions between 1990 and 2007 whilst in the British Forces. Fantastic memories, I do hope Roddy and Lilly are well as I recalled staying with them for one night as I was met the following morning by one of the first cruise ships, the Enterprise as I recall. I sat on the beach after Roddy made me breakfast and was joined by the Carracarra whilst I waited to be picked up by a small craft before boarding the cruise ship and over night making our way to Stanley - amazing place with people I still call friends. Similar latitude to northern England, but due to the strong westerly airflow around Antarctica, the climate is colder, similar from stats I've seen to say the Shetlands, to the north of Scotland. A typical Summer's day in Stanley averages 14-16 deg C, Winter about 4-6 deg C. Both island groups are windswept and treeless.

Visited the Faklklands in 2015. This is a most excellent and beautiful documentary! Of all the places, it's the small homes with baby lambs kept in the yard (for bottle feeding) and the farm kitchens and cozy pubs. At one of these in Stanley, I asked the barman some history questions; he suggested I go ask one of the patrons and I introduced myself and was invited by the elder patron to join him for lunch. He was Governor Rex Hunt's driver when the invasion of 1982 occurred. I listened to his story, but the 1982 conflict was the least of his memories: he sailed for years in a trawler protecting transatlantic convoys during WW2. As understated as the Islands themselves. The people and the wildlife of the Falklands are beautiful: no desire but to live where they live in harmony with all. Don't miss the accurate to scale model of the solar system which extends many hundreds of meters along a trail by the shipwreck bay, with a sun the size of a huge beachball and an earth the size of a small marble!

I've just come back from a two week trip to FI visiting family. My brother settled there after meeting and marrying a local 15 years ago whilst on a TOD with the Royal Navy. Loved it and loved the wildlife. And the STARS! Wow! Coming from a heavily light polluted Europe, I was in awe of the super starry nights and being able to clearly see the edge of the Milky Way on a clear night; beautiful! Wasn't too keen on the bumpy roads but you can't have everything

I like the way you edited this. You filmed and concentrated on what was going on and did most of your commentary after you filmed. Which I think is better for this wildlife based video.

@DannyThey belong to Argentina, in 1833 the British killed the Argentinian residents and stole the islands, and when we recovered them they invaded again.

@Danny A place can belong to a nation even uninhabited, most part of Australia is uninhabited, maybe China should move a million people there to claim half of Australia, what you think?

I stopped by the Falklands on the way around on a singlehanded circumnavigation in my 33' sailboat, but only stopped long enough to fill my water tanks as it cost $200. to clear customs and I didn't think it was worth it for a short visit. It was very late in the season anyway so the weather was less than pleasant so far south.

Sounds like an amazing trip! I think it would have been worth a stop, but I'm sure the weather was a challenge. Safe sailing!

I visited the Falklands in 1986 as a serving member of the british army. Stationed at Mount Pleasant, I had a very special time there or my 104 day tour. I visited Sea Lion Island, and stayed on Saunders Island. my daily trip from camp was to Mare harbour where I fished, walked and even took a skinny dip in the ocean from Bertha's beach. While I was out for a run I noticed a pod of Commerson's dolphins following me in the surf! I dived into the surf and the dolphins swam away. It was one of my coldest swims I can remember. It was a surreal experience being there after the war working and but also having lots of free time to explore the Islands. Thank you for your video, It brought back fond memories of my time there all those years ago.

I was there back in the Day, on Top of Mount Alice. 70 mph winds all day and night. Seems like there is a lot of roads built since I was there. A strange bit of Britain ( so much like Scotland or Wales) 1,000's of miles away from the Mainland! Back then only contact we had was by Helicopter.
