Undergraduate students in the Statics course offered at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) are required to build a spaghetti bridge as a final project. In this video, the students conduct the final test of their spaghetti bridge designs. A special thanks to teaching assistants Shafin Haque and Luis Varela.
Students must design a spaghetti bridge as a final project
00:30 - Bridges are weighed and measured
00:43 - The bridge must withstand a 2.5 lbf weight for 5 minutes
01:16 - All twenty bridge designs were unique
01:32 - Now lets break some bridges!!!
10:42 - Next Semester the load will be increased to 5 lbf
Now lets break some bridges!!!

its not about Spaghetti its about engineering and physics if u can make something that can handle a lot of wight with something thin and izi to break its amazing, imagine if we used that instruction the winner did with iron thin bar how much of material we could save !!. same as building house instead paying a lot of money and u can manipulate the instruction to buy fewer material and hold as strong as the old design with less money u pay ! .

Welcome to engineering school... here are some things you should know: 1) we don't understand the transition of potential into kinetic energy and the concept of velocity as it relates to force. Ie: 5:13 2) we haven't figured out how torsional stress affects a structure because we stack weights on different sides. 3) we also haven't figured out a better way to put weights on other than closing each individual chain by hand. 4) who ever designed this competition should have come up with better testing methods. Just saying.
@hwajeongkid25
@hwajeongkid25 5 лет назад
The dead load (weights) should be placed on the bridge platform to be distributed on all members and the structure might carry more weight. Placing it underneath will only stress a particular member, break it and may not reflect the actual load the truss can actually carry.

DR. Stewart, I liked to thank all your Mechanical/Civil Engineering students for an awesome spaghetti bridge design as a final class project. These designs should help students understand real world structures. Professor Stewart, I watched and analyzed all 66 lectures. All these lectures are amazing. Statics and Dynamics used to be part of the Electrical Engineering undergraduate degree at the University of Maryland College Park. I took both classes at the old Catonsville Community College in Catonsville, MD in 1986. I review these two classes because I will be taking the Fundamental of Engineering Exam very soon.

I started doing this back in 2010 with my classes. 70% of the grade is an engineering report on the design. 30% is based on a weight to load function. The weight is held on the road bed and not through a U bolt so it is more like a real bridge. The idea though is they can make an application and write a paper that describes. They also have to have a draft of the bridge in the CAD that we use.

Or just make up your own. 1 box of x-brand regular/thin/angel hair/etc... spaghetti or equivalent net weight (in case of broken noodles), 1 bottle of glue (or reel of fishing line) of certain size and type, span distance, load application location, method, and increments, time bridge must hold between weight addition. I would try to find a method for applying weights better than they did here. With weights hanging off the sides like that, it has the potential to torque the structure in unpredictable ways or create shock/acceleration loads if weights shift. Also, avoiding shock when applying weights would be necessary. Having teams apply their own weights and having an official (ideally multiple) with a stopwatch (that they press once the team member has ceased touching the structure) can help mitigate claims of unfairness.

Is point loading really the best way to determine overall strength of the design?
@brainmind4070
@brainmind4070 5 лет назад
drkjk If it's specified in the rules of the competition. A structural solution is designed around a load or loads and constraints. They're not trying to design actual bridges, just carry the most load held at the center point between a span of a certain distance. The bridge should be designed with this load case in mind. If the competition allowed the load to be held anywhere on the span, all the teams would apply the loads closest to the table, which would defeat the point of a bridge-building competition. A point or line load at the center is the most efficient test of a bridge design.

When I was in a bridge competition we had a plate that was connected to a pail that we would gradually fill with sand. It worked quite well and distributed the weight equally. The way they are doing it in this video has too much pull in a small area. And the weight increments at some point are too much to add .

@sambrewer2306
@sambrewer2306 5 лет назад
This method doesn't distribute the weight evenly. All weight is at the very middle. This would cause me to make a model weak on 25% and 75% across bridge and concentrate everything on 50%(middle) across the bridge
@brainmind4070
@brainmind4070 5 лет назад
A point load at the center is the worst case, which means it's the best test case. It doesn't test the deck, but it tests the overall superstucture most efficiently.
@brainmind4070
@brainmind4070 5 лет назад
Sam Brewer That's kind of how you should approach a bridge design anyway. A load near the table is much easier for a bridge to take than a load at the center (maximum bending moment).
@sambrewer2306
@sambrewer2306 5 лет назад
Thinking about it u are correct.(really) I was wondering if there was a way to sacrifice the 2 side 2/5s of bridge and concentrate all weight on the middle. (Assuming there is a weight restriction.)making the 2 outer halves weaker than middle. Just to win the competition. 😊
@brainmind4070
@brainmind4070 5 лет назад
Sam Brewer Not quite sure I understand exactly what you're saying, but the winning designs use more material in the center of the bridge. You can see how they are taller toward the center. This is a good approach to design because the taller cross-section at the middle resists bending better, where in the middle there is more of it. The problem with a tall cross-section, though, is stability, which is why the best design had a lot of little cross-members. One thing that bridge also did quite well was not using too much material on top of the table. You really only want just enough length so that a perturbation when weights are being applied doesn't unseat the bridge from the edge of the table. Too much material on top of the table is completely useless and material that can be used elsewhere to greater effect.

My bridge wasn’t in the video, but i had the professor before. For the people saying that the video was unfair, the project was to build a bridge that could withstand at least one weight. Everything else above one weight was just for fun. Of course the winner got to gloat but it wasn’t a big deal

Конструкция изначально просчитана на приложение усилия по центру конструкции . В реальности все сложнее . Попробуйте сместить груз к краю например . Или в бок от оси фермы .

I think they should use electric magnet instead of weight. Because you can set force at any value and know exactly when your bridge will fall. And it is delete any "drop" unfairness like in 5:13
