The golden period in Malayalam cinema was from 1984 to 1993. It began with Fazil’s “Nokketha Doorathu Kannum Nattu” and ended with Fazil’s “Manichitrathazhu”. The dark period began with the Shaji Kailas films of the early 90s and lasted till 2011 when Rajesh Pillai’s “Traffic” brought about the next new wave in Malayalam cinema.

From 2000 to 2010 there is so many blockbuster movies in Malayalam Film industry...eg: Narasimham,Ravanaprabhu,Rajamanikyam,Pokkiriraja,Cid moosa,Meesha madhavan lot of etc.... And before premam there is a massive industry hit movie called as DRISHYAM (2013)
You are correct but there is a slight tangent all the movies were mass movies instead of story or character driven movies, in my opinion Malarvaadi Arts Club, traffic ustad hotel and Thattathin Marayathu made the industry realise people will watch good movies without mass and this changed the industry, there can be mass but people like story more if these films failed the industry would still exist but good movies won't (my opinion)

Dileep was the king of mollywood during 2000-2016 ...his peak was till 2008...mbut overall Malayalam movies were great those period..but maybe after 2010 it declined a bit , thr best filim happens 2 years once, as dileep was only person carrying & saving the industry

But I need to say that Premam might have did a great job with Tamil audience and in terms of collection but it was Passenger (2009), Traffic (2011) and Salt N Pepper (2011) are the actual movies that acted as path breaking and beginning of New Wave in Malayalam Cinema. I don't know why people are saying 2000 to 2010 is bad era of Malayalam movie. Some movies released on that period: Thenkashipattanam, Devadhoothan, Narasimham, Madhuranombarakkattu, Kalyanaraman, Kazhcha, Thanmathra, Classmates, Chess, Kangaroo, Pranchiyettan and the saints, Big B, Keerthichakra, Rajamanikyam, Puthiyamukham, Anandhabhadram, etc... list will be goes on.
The main point i felt was In tamil industry stardum is the first priority but in Mollywood,nobody gives any priority for actor and actress. the story ,the script, the acting.
2000 to 2010 was never a dark period....it was just that in period movies weren't hyped like now a days....box office collection can never be criteria to decide good movies....movies like premalu are just below average movies compared to old or mid malayalan movies ...these got hyped due to ott platform era

Even in between 2000-2010 Malayalam movies had good movies..... Dileep as an actor reached top level during this time... And actors like Prithviraj came up during this time..

Malayalis watch every movies,beyond launguage.before ott tamil movies were hyped in kerala theatres.vijay fans,surya fans,dhanush fans,vijay sethu pathy fans etc was in kerala along with mohanlal and mamooty fans. In home also,we used to watch tamil movies in tv.Hindi movies were also shown in tv.Through ott,it became more vast.Spanish,french,german,korean,thai...movie lovers could watch every movies beyond barriers of language. But it took a long time for malayalam movies to get noticed.Those who noticed were not disappointed❤.Thanks to all amazing directors,writers and actors- and all other language movies for inspiring them❤.
