Please do a continuation on the Byzantine/Eastern Roman Empire! I hate it when people the Roman Empire fell when the Wester Empire fell, whilst the walls of Constantinople stood until 1453, and the people in the "ERE" called themselves "Romans" until that point

Short answer: Look at a map of Romania, then compare it to the map of the Byzantine Empire. Long Answer: Romania (as is today) is what aws known as the Kingdom of Dacia, whih became a Roman province in 106 BCE. they gave up on it during the crisis, in 275. The Goths came, followed by the Huns, and the avars and the slavs and so on before the Bulgarian empire came into existence which also included Romania. Then came the second Bulgarian Empire before the Ottoman empire consumed it. The Byzantine empire or simply the Eastern Roman Empire is the Eastern part of the Roman empire. Constantine moved the capitol to Constantinople (Istanbul today). Theodosius was the last to rule both the eastern and western parts of the empire. When the western empire fell, the eastern didn't. it continued until 1453. its size and power was at different heights, but the borders never reached north of the Danube (Which is Romanias southern Border) It was also a big part of the crusades and in general powerful throughout the Middle Ages, the walls of Constantinople was never actually breached until the Ottomans took the city. I am a History student and i am studying exactly this for my exams :)

hbk711x It's actually a joke. Let me explain. My joke refers to "The Roman Empire killed himself". In english the word himself can only be correctly used as a reflexive form of the word him. him can only refer to one person. The Roman Empire is not one person. you could think of it as multiple people or just anoun or whatever. now technically speaking an empire cannot have a gender. in recent years there has been quite a few vocal "liberal communists". anyway a classic problem that a lot of these people have is the assumption of gender etc. I mean they made up quite a large list of genders lol. so i thought I wouold make a joke where i sarcastically exclaim that the poster has assumed the gender of an empire.of course its more than likely a mistake and an easy one to make if english is not the first language. Can you really believe that people would be angry about the origional post saying himself.... I personally cant beleive anyone would give a shit. thats why my comment can be seen as a joke, and a bit of a dig at some of these "liberal communist views". I hope I have been clear enough. I personally cant believe that you took me seriously....actually from looking at your profile maybe I can lol

Few corrections: The east and west were considered same empire. The Byzantines never called themselves by that name, they knew themselves as Romans. Justinian spoke Latin as a first language, even when the main spoken language of the government was Greek, the people still viewed themselves as living in Imperial Rome. In fact, when the West fell, the official garments were transferred to the eastern emperor.

the western imperial capital from the late 3rd century was Milan, NOT Rome. It was later moved to Ravenna from Milan under Honorius.

I don't understand - why learning history is so hard? Those dates and names, for me, I always considered as unimportant. How made them importent?

Each date and name holds a story. If you view them just as "dates" and "names" they will remain so. Provide these data points with deeper visual and story behind them to make them more complete and easier to memorise. Be curious :)

@@HHalcyon I could've used your answer when I was a little girl taking history. The names weren't a problem for me, but the dates were. Plus, back then they didn't have women in children's history books, so I didn't feel a personal connection with the stories. I noticed that the boys in class we're always better at history than the girls, and now I understand why. Thankfully, as an adult, I don't need that gender association. I can identify with men just as easily as with women. Nevertheless, dates (of any kind) are still not my favorite thing to remember... LOL! But thanks to your kind, caring, and very helpful explanation, that problem could very well be a thing of the past. 🙂 P.S. - I am now your 42nd RU-vid subscriber. However, you'll probably never get this message of appreciation, due to your not having uploaded anything in many years.

Andrianople or Andrianoupoli in greek today, Edirne 😒😒😒.Centuries of blood against barbarians, zero outcome 😧😧.At least the west embraced the Roman and after renaissance the Greek(to a apoint) culture, making no difference between the Western Roman world and the later one that mainly starts with the Crusades...

İn case you don't know, Huns were Turko-Mongolian tribes, coming from Asia, typically fierce and brutal fighters. Their successor is Russia, which today has the same territorial claims as Huns and Mongols, ever expanding evil Empire.

nahh Russians are slavs. Their successors were the Turks, the Ottomans being a superpower as well for hundreds of years until the World War 1. I guess their strongest modern successor is still Turkey? Since the other Turkic countries were conquered by Russia and China relatively recent.
