Sierra Leone Pidgin is called Krio. As I said before, Freetown was one of the first place in Africa where Pidgin fully developed before it became langua franca in Nigeria . People spoke pidgin as a lingua franca on the streets of Freetown long time before it became a language spoken on the streets of Lagos or elsewhere in Nigeria. Freetown was the main British base in west Africa during the transatlantic trade prior to colonialism and the population of Freetown were already using pidgin as the common language on the streets before places like lagos became cities under the influence of the british. When Marrons from Jamaica were resettled in Freetown starting in 1787, pidgin then known as Guinea Coast creole English became lingua Franca in Freetown. Pidgin expanded to places like Nigeria and Cameroon as lingua franca but freetown is where it all started. Sierra Leone Krio also contain a lot of Portuguese and some.french words. Like I sabi for I know, from Saber ( to know in Portuguese). Or Pikin for small child from pequeno in Portuguese. There are also words from various African languages in Krio like. Kushe (greetings) from Nigeria's Yoruba, or butu (bend down) from Ghana's Twi, or Banga (palm nut interior) from Senegal's wolof.
@@lgnawa I am loving this lesson on Jamaica, the maroons, the dialect and Sierra Leone. I've always wondered about Jamaican patois because some stuff that I learned just didn't make no sense. I have to visit Siera Leone one day. I had no idea we were connected. Thanks.
@@lgnawa the british call it the athens of africa, miss trudy also visit Queen Elizabeth of england's bunker at fourah bay college,it was an emergency bunker during world war 2 for the Queen to hide if Hitler took over England
Culture Freedom You’re very stupid! Please read the history of our country. This was one of the biggest departure during slavery about 70% of the slaves from west Africa were departs here . Do you know why the cotton tree 🌲 in the capital is highly protected? I can see that you’re one the people that always try to humiliate blacks in America! We know all bad things you’re doing to our black brothers and sisters 👯 But the table will turn one-day.
😁😁😁😁 Jay Jay thanks for the short historic enlightenment , to clean up that individual's clogged mindset , about our country's history , regarding the slave trade.
