It’s a nice blade. It’s a Fallkniven. But the prices on all their blade have gone through the roof and I don’t understand why. There are so many other knives out there for way less. But great video! I enjoy watching them and listening to the reviews!

Pearls of wisdom from our Rob - a poorly designed handle can sabotage a good knife and a well designed one can be the making of a mediocre knife. I would normally suggested putting a length of bicycle inner tube over the handle to improve grip, but there doesn't look to be anything to hold that on - Oh well! I'll have to give the 20 curls a try when I'm having a fossick at some time. Thanks Rob, keep 'em coming!
@RobEvansWoodsman

Pearls of wisdom eh? There's one guy that comments (I removed his comments) who thinks I talk balls of shit! Says I use dangerous techniques and abuse my tools, funny that he's the only one that dose. I prefer the modern Bowie it's heavier and the handle is far better. But the Tor is a sexy big of kit 😜

I found your channel looking for reviews on the Trail Master. I wanted a Recon Scout but finding one of those is like hens teeth. My Recon Scout is 31 years old and was my main user for years, until I got a Chris Reeve shadow 4, I should have got one in san mai when they were readily available. There are techniques to chopping with big knife..or even an axe. I like the side to side technique, cutting only about half the diameter wide and going from the other side once I reach the center. You gotta make the chips fly. I find with knife, you can cut much thinner width on the log than an axe.

Great knife discussion. Wish I could have partook. I grew up in the 50's & 60's, so most knives for us were slip-joint folders, old Marbles hunters, or Dad's WWII Kabar's or Q25 Cattaraugus utility knives. Whatever you had, you made it work; or you went cold, wet, or hungry. No specialty knives back then, no ferro rods, no Bic's, no folding silky's; and no Uncle Ray or Grampa Mors to enlighten us. Just Baden-Powell, Dan Beard, and our Boy Scout Manuals. We'll talk more when we get around the camp fire......

Your big knife talk was fascinating, Rob. Your experience has much in common with my own, but I started a few years before you. I was bitterly disappointed with the Lofty Wiseman parang. The handle is/was badly designed and badly finished: nasty sharp bits to chew your hand up. I sent mine back for a refund straight away. I bought a Mk IV from Chris Reeve at a knife show in Johannesburg in 1984 or 1985. I can't remember exactly whether or not I took delivery at that show or if he sent it to me later on. It has the production serial number 10. It's essentially unused and probably worth now as much as all of my other knives put together!

Not really for you Rob but for your viewers, I will add that I spent a few years in the early 90s in B C and have been with outdoorsmen fishing and hunting, most of them never heard of a featherstick or ferro rod, we would usually drive out to anywhere we felt like it and chuck an aluminium boat in a lake and get a few trout, I carried a chainsaw, axe , shotgun and a 30 06 rifle, handsaw 3 knives loads of grub and about 10 methods of firelighting, I helped skin a deer with a cheap snap off blade ulility knife and took home loads of wood for my log burner at home, its only now I realise in my dotage that if I had walked a mile from my truck and got lost I probably would have died through lack of knowledge, so pay attention to guys like Rob if you ever are going to go somewhere with real wilderness, the knowlegde they give you will enhance your chance of living through a bad turn of events

I just picked this video up again after a year or so, and since then, as you know, I've acquired my Trail Master. This has had the effect of making me a whole lot more critical of larger knives reviewed by all and sundry. So, I'll add a few comments here and there: handle: now this is where the TM excels in my opinion. In particular in the wet. The other day I was doing some work and the grass was wet and I was working low down, so my hand got wet too. It was a while before I even registered that my hand wasn't slipping at all. I hardly noticed it. Another thing that is different is that the shock of chopping on a hard, dry oak branch was far less than I was used to (with my Bushwhacker!) As I've got smallish hand that came as a blessing. Choil: I get what you're saying. How would it be if the ricasso was thinner? Would that not alleviate the problem to an extent, as your hand would be that much closer to the beginning of the cutting edge? [This is not so relevant with the TM] 13:40 " ... never replace a bushcraft knife, and axe and a saw.. " This goes back to your statement earlier about one-tool-options, not so. Yet, I have it a little different: I'd prefer a Silky saw, a big knife (my TM), my Victorinox Swiss Champ and a bushcraft knife ( currently considering the Victorinox Venture Pro, and enjoying all the talk about it!!). This would be lighter than the axe option, and much easier to carry. 24:23 Just realized that what you said here was probably instrumental in my actually buying my TM! In retrospect I guess I owe you a debt of gratitude for that! ;-) 25:56 Becker: your comment about the handle, coating (and also the spine) - got into a bit of a argy-bargy with a bloke who thought the BK9 was the best things since Neil Armstrong! 🤣 27:00 Axe - yeah, I once saw a guy hurt himself with wielding an axe without any experience or skill - he's very lucky to still being able to walk today. Anyway, Rob, I enjoyed that as much as the first time! Cheers!

Two suggestions, firstly your great talk about the Lofty Wiseman survival tool would have been one million times better if you'd borrowed one, to show to all the folk that are not familiar with it ! Secondly, here's a thought for you, how about doing comparisons with old type knives ie 1950's stacked leather handle bowies from Richards of Sheffield, black handled army jack-knifes with the thing for taking stones out of horses hooves, bill- hooks and World War One bayonets, which were all used "in the day" ! Do you think that the hidden tang of it and the screw at the end of the handle can be considered a POF (point of failure)? Interesting review of Thor, and chat about big knives, Rob. At 27:00 you might have a point about safety, especially if person in question is self-taught type. On the other hand, if you have someone to show you basics of safe axe handling, IMHO it should not be an issue. Of course, no argument about portability. Big knife is waaay better if you (for any reason) have to travel light. In any case, hat down for great knife collection. As for Cold Steel, we can only wait and see what will become of them now, when Lynn sold it. Cheers, and take care.

Would love you to take your kukri out for a good test sometime, it's my all time favourite knife and as close to a one tool option as there is, I thought when I saw the name the Thor it would have been a seax

Interesting!!! So you’re saying 15 curls aren’t good enough because they won’t light so you need 20 curls to start a fire!!???
@RobEvansWoodsman
@RobEvansWoodsman 8 месяцев назад
I'm saying that 20 curls shows excellent knife control, well Mors kochanski said that, I'm just repeating it, obviously you don't need the shaving to curl loads of times just to light a fire.

@@RobEvansWoodsman no, it was clear! We students new to this get a bit excited when 1. I can make a curl of any type and 2. Make a feather stick that is almost like a real feather stick, It helps to watch you and then go practice, I love your videos! Thanks!

The sheath on the new version is just as bad, who puts the retaining strap on the cutting edge side? Someone who doesn't understand, use or carry knives. Get it right will you Fallkniven, if you are going to charge the moon for a knife at least get your sheaths perfect and also stop painting the sides of your sheaths, bloody sand,buff and dye the sides instead of cheaping out. Yours sincerely, a serious leathercrafter.
