I always thought that it was that the Sole Survivor was a gen3 synth. Given that VATS is attached to the PipBoy in game and in 4 you get this ability before finding the PipBoy.

There's a few problems with the P.A.M. theory. For one, P.A.M. and ZAX were in communication pre-war(as established in FO76 Nuclear WInter) and ZAX and Modus were in contract. Yet if you ask ZAX in fallout 1 they don't know why the war happened. Modus didn't predict the war either. Another is the Intro to Fallout 4. If there were detected incoming missiles that were fake, the air raid would've sounded and the vaults would've activated. This should've given the U.S. advance notice. Instead the PC in FO4 is given what is portrayed as a mere minutes advance notice. The TV anchor doesn't mention 4 missiles, but actual strikes in New York and Pennsylvania. The Enclave in FO76 also seem to have been caught off guard by the actual nukes. Likewise Mr. House mentions seeing and disabling actual nukes as they were incoming. It also doesn't make sense that a prediction algorithm run by the department of defense would sense nukes, instead of just launching them all at once and destroying China. P.A.M.'s purpose was to take in data, not make it up.

Actually, considering the final Terminal you talked about in the Switchboard, I think that Terminal is another Easter Egg in itself. Back in 1983, a Soviet Nuclear Weapons facility detected 4 probable Nuclear ICBM launches from the United States. The Soviets in that base almost launched their payloads until one man named Stanislav Petrov told everyone to not launch the nukes back at the US, he knew that if the US was going to attack the USSR then the US would launch more than 4 nukes at the Soviet Union. Petrov's prediction was right, and this guy literately saved the world. Their Nuclear Alert systems went off because of a solar reflection in space, which made the ICBM alarms go off. I think the terminal is a reference to that event, only the US was a bit too quick on their actions and began their Nuclear Retaliation. Maybe the bombs actual fell because of an error, now thats a pretty good theory right there.

The Fallout Shelter game has lines of internal dialogue for the Mr Handys when you send them out into the wasteland to collect bottle caps and one of the lines of dialogue is something about hearing how it was an AI who started the Great War.

Interesting real world parallel: There have been several instances of false data getting into early warning systems, for example NORAD once loaded a tape for a drill into the wrong machine and operators began getting aircraft tracks coming over the poles. But the biggest one was an event in the Soviet Union involving Stanislav Petrov. He was a Lt Colonel in the Soviet Army Rocket forces, on duty in one of the early warning stations. 3 weeks after the shoot down of Korean Airlines 007, a very tense point in US/USSR relations, his system reported a single missile launch from the United States, followed up after a minute or two by five more. He ignored standing orders and procedure and did not forward the information up the chain, judging such a tiny launch to have to be a detection error rather than an actual strike, and given the automated response escalation that would have followed forwarding the info, likely prevented World War III.

Kinda fitting how if you go through the convoluted process of making all the factions peaceful with each other, merely coming near P.A.M. or speaking to her after accomplishing all of that makes them hostile again. It's like she secretly gets off on violence.

I will always say the secret is in the terminal about the freefall legs where the engineers name is Jack. It being a reference to The Boots of Springheel Jack from Oblivion.

Something of note is that Vault 76 wasn't just hinted at in Fallout 4 but in 3 as well. During the quest where you have to find a Vault that has a GECK for Project: Purity the very first entry in the Terminal you have to go through is about Vault 76

I dont think we can really “solve” what secret todd hinted at. Yeah sure he said its in a terminal somewhere but that is still not enough information to go off of. It could literally mean anything within a terminal is my point, so i dont believe he actually spilled any beans, but rather used it as a tactic to get people back in and playing. The P.A.M theory is cool though, its just irrelevant to the plot of this video

I've always found it weird that the one terminal basically confirms you're a synth and nobody even cares.

I thought it was kind of obvious that the terminal entry at the Institute regarding 3rd Gen synths is referring to - among others - the Sole Survivor. The entry states that certain Gen 3 synths can use (something very similar to) VATS without a Pip Boy. At the beginning of the game, when you're escaping Vault 111, you can use VATS to kill radroaches BEFORE you acquire a Pip Boy. How would you be able to do this if you weren't a Gen 3 synth? Lots of people speculated that the Sole Survivor was a synth throughout the years and even DiMA in Far Harbor wonders about it. That could be the discussions on Reddit that Peter was referring to. People just didn't link the Institute terminal to their theories. The Sole Survivor is a synth and the terminal proves it. THAT was Todd Howard's secret.

The secret is that your playing as a synth.... the reason you have vats. It’s in the terminal in the institute where they make synths.

The terminal in the institute described gen3 synths being able to focus on and mentally target enemies with perception of slowing time and percentage of chance to hit, much like V.A.T.S. The Sole Survivor unlike previous protagonist in the Fallout series can use V.A.T.S before picking up the Pipboy at the start of the game.

It took 3 years and a lot of speculating, but the biggest mystery or secret in Fallout 4 - Todd Howard's terminal secret, has finally been found.

so basically pam is the american version of stanislav petrov. except instead of his situation where he decided it was a false alarm because of his ability of critical thinking and doubt Pam saw it as true and therefore she launched the nukes instead of withholding and the world went into nuclear war

I always took the detection of 4 ICBM’s as just the first 4 of many to be detected and the rest were picked up soon after as they were launched / came into range.

There is a terminal out of reach, unless you place things in a way to jump out of bounds. It gives you a holotape, but I've never been able to do it. I believe it was talked about in one of Oddheader's videos.

the institute terminal explains that the sole survivor is a synth and it makes perfect sense you can't use vats when you enter vault 111 in the prewar era, but after you wake up and start to waddle out of your slumber, you can use VATS without the pipboy.

It's a cool theory, but "who dropped the bombs" is a really big thing in the fallout universe, and I highly doubt bethesda is going to give the title of "destroyer of worlds" to a very minor and hardly developed side character hidden inside of a side faction, much less in a way that requires this many vague assumptions. Only being able to confirm an initial attack of 4 nukes isn't proof alone Ultimately AI's definitely still could be behind the war, but I highly doubt it's PAM. And with how much you have to stretch that terminal just to come to that conclusion, I doubt that's the "really good one" either

At the beginning of fallout for the vault tec rep seemed to know something was about to happen, literally saying (something along the lines of this, it's been a while) "immanent destruction may be.. *sooner than you think* hehe.." the whole conversation he seemed nervous, jittery like he wanted to get you to sign and leave

I believe it's the hidden terminal in the Boston Public Library, not the terminal itself, but the Holotape it gives you. The Holotape is a scan of all the books in the library; and considering the Boston Public Library is the 3rd largest library in the United States, it holds an immense amount of information. Supposedly it was apart of a cut quest that had you hand over the tape to one of the factions. However, the terminal was never removed, nor the Holotape, nor the obtained experience gain from getting the tape. The tape is uninteractable, you cant put it in the pip-boy nor any other terminal, and when dropped it just floats in the air where your cursor was pointed before going into the pip-boy inventory menu.

Its almost 2020, I got the platinum trophy years ago and yet I still find myself playing Fallout 4, (I've never uninstalled it on my PS4). I know it has its problems but I truly love that game.

I haven't watched the whole video but my guess on the terminal he mentioned is that the player character is a synth, it said on a terminal a special new type of synth they have made in which the synth can use what they describe as VATS, in fallout 4 your character is the only one in any fallout game that can use VATS before picking up a pip-boy.

After beating the game with the Institute ending then finishing Far Harbor, I just assumed the lead protagonist was a 3rd Gen Synth. I thought it was pretty much implied by Nick Valentines brother.
