Fallout 76 - How Much Damage Resistance Do You Really Need?
Suppose you have a set of armor with effects that you want but the armor isn't top tier. Maybe it's Scout, Combat or even Leather. Should you aspire to something like Secret Service or is what you already have good enough? Let's find out.

The random spikes of damage could be from charging sniper barrels, assuming those work with AI. Normally if you wait 3 seconds between shots, it charges up and does more damage.

I was always of the assumption that each piece only protects that part of your body and the overall didn't really matter so much, just depends on what part of you gets hit and whether its protected or not.

I had that impression as well. It seems to be not the case. Which means when you loose a piece due to it being broken, it doesn't need to be a big deal.

That would make sense but it seems to just add the total DR together and use that number. But those random high numbers I got during the energy test hints that maybe head shots are special. But, I don't know. It's all just guesses.

Good video, but something to note: Damage Resistance matters more the higher the damage of an attack is. This is because of wonky bethestha math. So when your seeing a 0.5 decrease per limb by shot of a super mutant / bloodeagle, you would see a more significant reduction when getting your ass handed to you by a Sheepsquach. Granted its all relative rlly, that fact of the matter is, DR/ER/Other types of R all have dimishing returns the higher you have them, because theres a maximum amount of damage you can block from any given attack.

Damage reduction from damage resistance is the same calculation used in Fallout 4. Since it’s a ratio calculated from damage resistance divided by damage enemy outputting it’s impossible to make any assumptions on enemies not doing a lot of damage. Taking a piece of armor off has very little effect because you were well over the point of diminishing returns to begin with. Most people recommend 300 damage resistance because the harder an enemy hits the less (%) is mitigated. So the damage taken is exponentially higher based on how much damage they do. 300 gets you to around 80% damage reduction from even tough enemies (couple exceptions currently like Angler unarmed). This is easy to notice in combat if you know what you are looking for. There will be one enemy that can hit you really hard meanwhile a dozen other enemies attacking all at the same time can’t scratch you. Your armor is blocking 90% of the damage from the dozen enemies but only 30% from the one that does a lot of damage (just pulled that 30 and 90 out of thin air for example).

What you mean by "damage resistance divided by damage enemy output"? So if you have 300 resistance and enemy output 200 damage, that is 1.5. So 1.5 what? It doesn't add up with your next comment where you say harder hitting enemies ignore more of the damage resistance. I believe you, just that the calculation doesnt make sense, or what did I miss?

So would a build with super high dr be good for bosses while for expos basic events etc 300 is fine?

Yeah thats why i switched from ss to solar set with a full health setup and holy fire as my main weapon. With the right perks im tanky af, basically immortal and still do high enough damage while also providing some team support.

The only real benefit to going to top tier armor is the modded pieces don’t need ballistic fiber to repair and the ability to use the jet pack. I’ve never bought into needing the “best” armor that are impossible to get the effects you want easily from trading or vendors. Stimpak are insanely plentiful and stealth to avoid taking damage anyway. Makes having diminishing returns on 300+ resistance makes that grind just a gimmick to keep people playing.

Have you tried bloodied builds? Getting 17 or 18 dmg ist the difference between "I should use a stim!"" and *respawn*.

@@harrisonfnord5871 I have a few bloodied builds. One of them is a stealth bloodied berserkerp. If your not taking damage. You don’t need resistance. But yes, she’s a one shot kill which definitely makes it more fun!

I'm guessing that these are not linear progressions. It's not that you're taking .5 more damage, it's that you're taking 8% more damage, so for enemies that are using single shot weapons or melee weapons, each piece of armor will make a much bigger difference. Just don't want people running around in full wooden gear wondering why mirelurks hit so hard :p

You can control the damage resistance with a full combination, so the perks, the mutation, the armor and legendary effects can help for less damage and refresh the health but all that is for pve and no for pvp ,for pvp in this game you need special armor protection and mutation and perks (for example if the opponent use cryolator the simple armor can't protect you)

It's a shame that we don't have the actual mechanical explanations on hand, that we gotta do practical experiments to learn anything. It's like Bethesda doesn't want anyone to find out their combat system has glaring holes or boring levels of homogenization with everything. There are a few bits of uniqueness to certain things but that's it. It's still a good game to me, but after a year I struggle with mainstream builds because there's no real sauce to them. I've tried to avoid low health builds, not because its more challenging, but because its less so.

Makes testing very challenging. I wish custom worlds gave us the ability spawn specific enemy weapon combos. I wanted to test more enemy weapon combos but roaming the map until I find what I want just isn't feasible.

After 300 DR/ER, the slayer legendaries or anything giving a fixed percent of damage reduction is generally better. Thankfully I had enough bullion saved up to get a set of secret service armor by the time I finally got around to the wastelander questline. I still doubt the helmet is worth its cost though

Blood Eagle dialog goes a long way to explaining their behavior. They can't decide if they want to shoot you, or other Blood Eagles, or themselves.

Honestly, so long as you’re above 250 for both Ballistic and Energy is enough. After a certain amount, the damage calculations start to drop severely and you’ll see bigger number don’t mean squat. You could have an Energy Resistance of 500-600 and those Protectrons and Liberators will still take out a chunk of your health.

The only thing you didn't mention is various perks requiring full sets... Funky Duds, etc. That's another mitigating factor where you don't want to "break a set".

Great video. Very interesting. It makes want to sacrifice a piece of Uny SS armour for non-SS unyielding with weapon weight reduction when carrying weight is an issue.👍

ive had great luck with a full health build, vampire weapon, and mix matched 3 star specific for occasion. for example all assassins for the pit, all troubleshooters when running a sylo, or mutants slayers for eviction notice…with all 5 pieces and second star sentinal/vanguard i pretty much cant die

I love having a couple of enemy specific weapons. I'm running around with a mutant hunting alien blaster and an assassins gamma gun for exp runs and dealing with random humans as I explore. It's so nice to have a damage Spike when I just rock paper headshot the right enemy

The issue is that most of the time, you won't be dealing with a single enemy. So say it's in average of 3 than you multiply the average damage you take by 3. So if it's 5 than average battle, you will take 15. HP play a way bigger role. Played a lot hours on bloody with pretty much every damage perk maxed and still can die easy. Switch to 50-75%, and I'm pretty much a tank even as bloodied with a 50 cal vamp outside certain double mutations Daily OPS. That is with just DR perks, as I run SS tho only pocketed on armor and jet pack. UsingvPA with trouble shooters and robots just stickle me outside the sheep squash but still tanks it with a vamp. HP I have found matter more as with my bloodied no matter what DR perks I have I don't see a huge difference with them on vs not . Tho when you're at 50 HP you take any extra you can. Ido notice a huge difference, tho going from 50 HP to 250 even without as many DR perks. I would agree tho 250 DR is good enough tho 350 is best if you truly wanna tank.

It seems that for every 50 points of damage resist is one more point of damage. Question : If a weapon from an enemy was doing 15 dmg per hit base does it do the same actual output when the player uses it ? are all the perks for that weapon needed to be on par with NPC base damage ?

This difference seems to be small but try to redo it in front of west tek with multiple muties and all of a suden one piece of armor could make a lot of a difference

Great test :) I have always said that 230DR and ER is the softcap of armor and you truely dont need more. Alot of people got mad at me for saying that and called me a lier and so on, just never bothered to do a test like what you are doing here. Great video :) EDIT: This shows that a chinese stealth armor is more than enoth with a few perk cards to boost DR/ER and also a few mutations :) I still love my Bloodied Alpha Werewolf build and is the most fun build i have been playing this year :)

It's a bandana. Either green or camouflage. Can't remember which. It's not something you can craft. You just find them in the world.

Seems like armor is often pointless. It breaks way too fast and unless you have unlimited ballistic fiber you purposely craft lower tiers. Daily Ops Decryption armor piercing practically one shots you which makes it a pain in the arse to solo the boss who is in PA. I just wear leather now with deep pockets and run around with iron clad and a vampire weapon. For the really annoying bosses or in nuke bomb sites I'll break out the PA. If armor broke as slowly as PA then yeah it might be worth it. Some perks help a bit but in all not worth the upkeep.

Run Secret Service. It doesn’t require ballistic fiber to repair, though it does require asbestos instead.

I have 400 damage resist in both stats and I get absolutely melted. Damage has to be bugged I’m working on an unyielding set and if that doesn’t help it idk what to do

I just started playing on October 27th of this year (so little over a month) and I’m lvl 365. 4 lunchboxes, and high intelligence can get you 3x-4x experience. Then just play events and expeditions + west tek runs. I guess it depends more on how many hours you have during those years, but I currently have 300+ hours, and 1 lvl per hour is super easy to get just from playing normally.

Because it has built in damage reduction, the different resistance numbers of different power armor types don't matter. Any power armor will give you better protection than any non power armor.

too bad you haven't shown the dmg taken while at (well) below 100 DR. if you google "damage resistance chart for fallout 4" (76 uses the same), you can see the vast drop of dmg taken between 0 and 100 DR. Also, mathematically, DR and ER are treated the same. A test with light combat would have shown that every armor that brings you above 100 is "good enough", and after 300 the curve flattens out. So good legendary rolls are worth more than a DR/ER above 200 (that is, for full health builds. bloodied players need every single point of DR).

What's the point in that video. I don't get it. What we need to know is how much defense we need in Atlantic or other spots with level 100 enemies. I don't care about the damage of a supermutant at level 50. We need other type of info. For example. How much defense on Atlantic with bloodie build for avoid the one shot melee at 5 or 10%healt? That's the type of info on Defense ppl need I think
