What a wonderful end to this adventure! This video has brought so much insight into the production of the Pip-Boy. The team really did a great job with what they could and I'm so glad I was able to get my hands on one with all the add-ons. They're beautiful pieces of art. And thank you for tearing apart yours so I don't have to. 😂

This shows why Chris made the right decision. In order to do it right he would wind up building a bespoke machine that would require a strong Market. The truth is there isn't a market for a 2 and 1/2 kg gigantic cell phone that you wear on your arm. We have no need for everyday use of Geiger counters or exposure meters and no one listens to the radio anymore. That said this is one of the coolest things I've ever seen.

You have to have the most criminally undersubscribed channel I've run across. I've been waiting a while for the conclusion to this series to see how you tackled the rad meter, having picked up my own parts for a very miniaturized geiger counter. We'll see if the US-made GM tube has the desired sensitivity despite its small size. I have to agree about the moving coil meters, and your solution was excellent. I'm more interested in real-ifying the 3000, which has an even tinier rad meter, so your edge meter hack is probably the only real solution. Thanks for putting out such quality videos!

Hi there, I had a question about how you access the on/off switch on the Blackberry. I remember in your first video you showed a piece of tubing that slid back and forth, but am I right to assume that you've changed that since the modules on that side along with the cuff are blocking access?

it woud be so nice to give the klock a nother try :D Yes it will be komplicadet, and maby very expansive, But: The Pitboy is in one or oher way A very very overfechered smartwach, so the clock is the part, that maby like the geigerkounter the most important part! ;D maby you must go vor a sligtly bigger enkloser vor that, i woud not see a problem for that, a working turning ckock is it so woth it! also, the pitboy woud bekome a realy useful even when you not were it, bekaus it show you time, days and sutff, it woud be a amasing deskitem! preas, give the klock a nother go :D my atampt woud be: rubber weels that drive individualy the numberweels from behind. the motors can be more easy kontrolt by elektonik programming. also the rubber weels kan have multiple sises, to make room vor each other, so, you can use multible motors anstead komplikaded gears. But, if you use geras, make then visible. i see no reasons to hide nice cool geras ;D maby even the whatchletters it self cud be 1/6 a gear it self, so you can insteao of rubber, gear in the back to turn the letters. i think a combination of tuning from inside and from behind can you get the clock, that we want ;D

I'm not sure I understand, but will take a stab at it. The needle is bent first upwars, then down. Be careful, these needles break easily. Then cut off the excess. Then paint the needle red. Hope that answers your question.

The problem with the antenna is solvable. I have now built several radios here, some very small ones and some from kits (I'm a HAM), there are these mini-radios built over an Si4732 FM/AM radio chip, that is small sized and if you put that thing on board with some SMD parts, you would easily have a receiver that fits. A small AM/MW ferrite core would fit, too, well the FM plug should be external or a telescope that you just pull out. The whole thing runs from 2x1.5V batteries and the thing doesn't suck much power and runs for days on that. I mean the ready radio kit you'll get with everything for less than $5 on the internet. That's doable. Sure, you'd need your own layout, but that's not a hard one. On the other hand you got two mockup tubes in there already, throw one of them out, place a real tube, some el-cheapo Chinese 6J1 in there and copy the Franzis Verlag Audion receiver. Then it will only be playing shortwave, but that cooler anyway. With an single tube Audion you can receive AM, and CW and SSB transmissions, if you restore the carrier, which is just another little chip, the Si5153, I guess would work fine. If you generate that, you'd be able to tune in to all kind of shortwave transmissions, of course to be able to run that you then need about 6m of wires. It is wrong that you need so much wire for receiption, of course a resonant antenna is better than a non-resonant, but for reception a long wire is a good solution and only if you want to transmit on it, it becomes more difficult. We are using LW all the times here in Germany. And they start working well from 2m onwards, 6m is good, around 23m is optimal, after that you won't get any advantage, you'd been easily able to listen to all radio and amateur radio transmissions around the globe. Simple nylon coated steel wire for jewellery for $5 per 100m on the internet is working fine. We even transmit over that wire without a problem, up to 300W. Well, it's not perfect but it's thin, cheap, doesn't need heavy masts. Good job! de DL7HH
@YourGeekFix
@YourGeekFix 9 месяцев назад
Wow! Great advice. The problem for Chris was a lack of radio stations to receive where he was. Works fine for me here in the US. Would be better if it was AM.
@HannoBehrens
@HannoBehrens 9 месяцев назад
@@YourGeekFix You did just a great job there, I also put in a comment how to do your dials and the clock without the mechanical gear problem for cheap in your assembly clip, I just watched now. Actually the MW/AM band is quite empty now, but the shortwave band (HF) is also AM modulated and because that band propagates over the ionosphere it is not just local but more or less global or at least continental. So a shortwave receiver would give you the real feeling of world radio with strange sounds, foreign languages and all that, also shortwave radio has ionospheric distortions, which would just add fine to the feeling. I do not think that VHF/FM radio is a good solution, because the music they are playing is just awful and doesn't fit. Also it's local, as MW. So SW is it. The antenna problem isn't, because you can put a spiral wire around/inside your arm-padding, you just sew 23 meter of thin enameled wire or said nylon coated 0.35mm steel wire for $4 around. A single winding is about 30-35 cm so with about 60-70 windings you have a really strong shortwave antenna. What you want to receive is the 49m band, I guess, so 23m of wire would be perfect and resonant, but with all the capacity of your body and everything, who knows? Make it a bit longer and shorten it piece by piece until the noise level maximized, then it's perfect. Simple trick. Do the tuning with your arm inside, because it will change the induction. I'm doing things like that on a nearly daily base, while it will not work every time, mostly it does, at least as a HAM I have absolute positive experience with that. Sure, you could have a better antenna if you stretch the wire up a tree or something, but it will work fine. You have a whole lot of HF/AM shortwave radio stations in the US and EU and if you don't listen to them, you have near that the 40m HAM band, which will work, too. Contact me, if I shall help you at QRZ.com DL7HH. But it's not rocket science. I got my own channel and can make a demo setup, if you want. Just forget about MW, that's really dying, sadly. I'm not so much into props, but into tech and I'm playing with weird, cheap electronics very often (if not daily). Ready cheap HF receivers you get as a small circuit on Ali for $5 sometimes. Check ATS-20 for example. The circuit is Arduino based, completely hackable. All-band-all-mode receiver. Does even Morsetelegraphy.

Chris Bernardo must have enjoyed your designs. it surprised me that the geiger counter was not small enough for the 3 buttons to be usable. I have considered making the 2000(not the 2000 mark VI), though I feel there may be quite a challenge to recreate since the majority of the parts are difficult to fit into a condensed shell. good luck in your 2nd recreation of the icoinic pipboy. may your progress be fruitfull. Also, I noticed you could have just put in a digital clock rather than the analog as you show example of someone doing eairly the episode. perhaps do that instead?
