Fallout New Vegas Lonesome Road - Ulysses' final message 

"If war doesn't change, men must change" - That is, for me, the real conclussion of a series that started in the first game with the phrase "War... War never changes".

"War never changes but men do through the roads they walk " absolutely my favourite line in all of fallout.

“Whatever your symbol. Carry it on your back. And wear it proudly when you stand at Hoover Dam.”

Ulysses was a man that stood for something that was beyond him. Even if he was alone it, it wouldnt stop him from fighting for it. The whole DLC he was trying to teach the Courier a lesson. That if nothing changes, history was doomed to repeat itself. I have spray painted his flag on the back of my jacket and wear it everywhere ready to spread that message to everyone that asks about it. I have cut out. And re seemed it to other jackets over time as I've grown. He is by far the greatest character that I have seen in any game and his ideology was so perfect and relatable to the real world that hes inspired so many people to push forward in whatever they believe in regardless of any situation. To remind people that they can make a change in the world that nobody else can but them. "The day I set my flag down. It will be over my body, or over a nation I believe in" This is the many reasons why I've held this game close. It holds one of the strongest independent characters I've ever encountered.

8 years and I still believe Ulysses is the best NPC in fallout

"Even if it is nothing at all, know what you follow" this line made me really consider my options. I know I didn't want the legion but it made me also realize I didn't want the NCR either. I took off my ranger gear and wore a factionless duster as I fought for an independent Vegas

Bethesda: "Don't worry about it, you wouldn't understand."

Imagine a world where Ulysses defeated The Courier, and while standing over their body, he plays this one last time to himself.

“If I can’t carry the weight of the world, I’ll settle for the weight of a nation.” It sounds like something Ulysses would say, doesn’t it?

I really wish that New Vegas didnt have to end with the battle at the Hoover Dam, and they had more time to iron out post game content. I sincerely wish that Lonesome Road was where the game "ended", where the Courier makes the final decision for who should own the Mojave and walks away from it all forever.

This message gave me strength during a time in my life when I had none... I was contemplating suicide when I first heard this, and it inspired me to keep going.

This game felt like the spiritual ending to the original Fallout Franchise. If war doesn't change, men must change.

I was a little disappointed that my courier duster had the NCR bear on it. I was shooting for an independent Vegas, but right before doing Lonesome Road I did a bunch of good for the NCR because I thought even if I don't fully support them I should ensure that the Legion lose. So Ulysses treated me as if I were NCR.

I failed to convince him so in the end, only I emerged from the Divide. Whenever I grow tired or lose hope in the faction I am following (NCR), I always play this message, reminding me of Ulysses' dream for the future and my duty to prove that the NCR will not crumble like he thought they would.

New Vegas was truly the End of Fallout.

This guy could narrate the phone book and make it sound cool.

That 1:59 of a guy's speech is the greatest piece of media ever put in anything. Ever. No matter how you solve things at The Divide and how you handled things with Ulysse. This piece of dialogue is the most powerful and poignant speech ever written, said and acted. We arent worthy of such art. The Obsidian team who worked on Fallout: New Vegas and its dlc may not gained the respect allegedly owed by Bethesda, but for us, its the greatest piece of dialogue ever put in a video game. The voice actor, the speech patern, the dialogue and context, all in perfect harmony. We wont ever see or heard such a strong and deep message that will shock players to their core like that. Not in our day and age. "If war doesnt change, man must change", a poignant true end to the Fallout world. The mistake and arrogance of the pre-war people lead to the new world's war and suffering. And its because of this that if these people keep associating with the Old World's view, they are doomed to repeat it. This whole adventure made me completely give up on the NCR and follow Yes Man for an Independent New Vegas. Ulysses is considered an Antagonist, but all i see is a man dreaming of a better world. Without the mistakes of the Old World. What a fucking experience.

I convinced him to no longer fight against me, but to join me in a last battle against the remnants of the Old World and we both emerged from the Divide. He will stay to watch over the land, as I went to battle for the NCR in an effort to bring back the old world once more but in the right way.

Walking back towards Primm, wearing the Courier Duster, as a wolf stands atop a rock looking at the Sunrise, while I listen to a comrade's farewell. A perfect end, for a perfect storyline spanning four dlcs, in a near perfect game

If you want to know the WHY of things. This world, i've walked a good part of it. I stopped, only because of YOU. What YOU did. Gave me pause. Long ago, I crossed the Colorado. The first among Legion to see Hoover Dam in ALL it's glory. An Old World Wall, yet bridging two sides. And beyond it? A symbol of a two headed bear. An idea great enough to challenge Caesar himself. Ulysses: You took everything from me! Courier: I don't even know who you are

The first time I played Lonesome Road, I loved it, and I tried incredibly hard to explore the entire DLC as much as I could, I got obsessed with finishing it at 100%. I found his tapes, and I started to understand what he was talking about. When the time came to face Ulysses at his temple, I discovered that hearing his tapes opened special dialogue options for me to convince him to stop the nukes from getting launched. When he told me that he despised the bear, but that he believed that I could "create" a better version of it in the future if I kept believing in it, that's when I got really soft for what his ideals represented. We fought together against the marked men, and then I returned to the Mojave, only to find his final message. "If war never changes, then men must change... Whatever your symbol, carry it on your back and wear it proudly when you stand at Hoover Dam.” Then I opened the crate... My very own Duster, with the Two-Headed bear on its back. Im gonna be honest here, I started to cry a river. "Carry it on your back and wear it proudly". Even when he didn't believe in the NCR, he believed in my own ideals. He believed in me and the future I was trying to achieve. Where Joshua taught me to never lose the right path, and always be faithful, Ulysses taught me to always, ALWAYS believe in myself. How ironic it is that two major ex-High rankers from the Legion could be so inspirational? The ex-legatus and the ex-frumentarii. Huh. I also have a very silly headcanon, that he sewn the Duster for me, and I can imagine him sewing the thing while feeling very awkward at admitting that I bested him through speech. I love New Vegas just as much as i love Dark Souls, they are such wonderful gems.

If it wasn't for him blaming the courier for the divide he would've been the best fallout character, right alongside with Joshua Graham, but instead the fan base mocks him like they do with Preston Garvey (even though he's way better written than preston)

With Lonesome Road Obsidian closed the circle started with Fallout 1. History doesn't change because men doesn't change, we can say that with this all the philosophy behind all the next fallout is pointless. It's 2024 and i found absurd that this masterpiece is not recognized in the gaming industry

new vegas to me is 3rd main line entry in the fallout series and the last. fallout: capital wasteland? oh it was an alright spin off, though fallout: commonwealth was pretty shit

Does this bring a tear to anyone else's eyes, the nostalgic here hits me hard.

Ulysses proves his point in his last message,his opinions to the courier, and views of the current world. History would repeat itself, if nothing changes. The NCR and Caesar’s Legion are nothing but reminders of the old world and should not be allowed to repeat history by trying to take over Vegas who wants to remain independent. For my opinion, let the old world along its remnants die and start anew!

Ulysses does for Fallout what Kreia does for Star Wars: they objectively point out that the core ethos of what's kept the story going the entire time is flawed and beyond redemption, and the only way to create a better world is to throw it all away and try to create something new and realistic to human nature. They're both outsiders to the normal perception of the characters, but have full knowledge of both sides and all the gradations between. I think the reason a lot of people don't like both characters, and mock them ignorantly, is because they don't want to accept that the way they've thought about both franchises is wrong, and that their mentality only serves to perpetuate the horror and conflict of the worlds they take place in.

So basically keep fighting, keep questioning and believe in yourself? Lovely message, really.

Opinion time. If you are going for independent route for new vegas, aka yes man ending, i do think that you should either nuke long 15 or nuke both of them. Both of those are routes for NCR and Legion respectively, right? So if you really want Mojave to be independent, they should not be allowed to have direct access to Mojave. Now of course the problem with this is, can Mojave sustain itself? I believe so, as Mojave have the hoover dam. A huge, huge source of water and electricity. With no one to contest for it, Mojave can focus it attention solely on developing it's own land and thrive. By cutting of Long 15, we effectively cut of Caesar's advance through Mojave as it's no longer a strategic position to mount an attack on NCR as a headquarter, as they can no longer use the Long 15 to travel to NCR lands. But this might be a problem if Caesar dies, and Lanius takes his place as I don't think he care that much about strategically occupying a location so he might attack it anyway. Therefore, the best thing for Mojave is still nuking both places. There are some other things that we need to think of like trading, technology, rulership and the so on. But I think this is a good start. If you have any other opinion, if you agree or disagree please do tell me below. There might be some things that I'm missing.

There's a part of me that considers New Vegas the final installment to the Fallout Franchise and consider what came after as spin-offs, the writing for it was just too good to top and Bethesda can't do anything like Obsidian did in 2010 except rerelease Skyrim

Back when fallout games where more than just a game there's truth to this makes you think games like this are truly the greatest fun emotional extremely well written and to some degree a learning experience

I wished if I saved him he could be my companion and his mission be to stop the war between NCR and legion and make them Allie and free slaves and this will be the best ending in my opinion

War never changes. Then that seems like maybe just a quote or a lil nod towards the human condition and how we truky work. But today, those words hold meaning, they hold pain and sorrow. Not just because its the truth but because it seems more and more likely that today, more than ever, will the events of fiction seem close to reality and there isnt anything we can do to stop it
