One of the things that kind of symbolizes how Lucy has changed but stayed the same is her "Okie Dokey" lines. She never loses the Okie Dokey, but as the show progresses it feels like it takes more out of her. She's a character that desperately doesn't want to change, but slowly slowly the wasteland is grinding her down... absolutely fantastic writing and acting.

I lost it at the part where a certain part of a certain person's body has to be cut off, and she can only "OH GOLLY" and "HOLY MOLY." I felt it PERFECTLY captured what sort of society she came from and where she entered

Spoiler for the ending of season 1! I was underwhelmed by the reveal that Michael Emerson's head contained the secret of cold fusion. They've already established that a single power core, which is small enough to hold in your hands, is enough to power an entire vault for hundreds of years. The Brotherhood of Steel must have dozens, maybe hundreds of those power cores, since they have so many knights. So why is this new power source so important?
@_uncredited
@_uncredited 5 месяцев назад
Mini-fusion cores belong to Vault-Tec and the military (Brotherhood). In the game, they are prized items because the civvies can't make them. 'Cold fusion' is this show's McGuffin because it means the great unwashed get free unlimited power, but I agree it's very weak in a universe that already bypasses the 'power' problem. I'd much rather it had been straight up revenge or the secret to non-ghoul immortality or something.
@kwileby09
@kwileby09 5 месяцев назад
I see it more like a power core being able to power a base or a Vault like 4, whereas cold fusion can power the region and beyond. And to your point of course about the Brotherhood or the Enclave who was developing the fusion, that's kind of their whole M.O. to keep pre-war and advanced technology seperate from the common folk of the Wasteland.

21:16 Spoiler heads up. Regarding your point about whether Vault Tec was manipulating the governments of the world or launched the bombs themselves, im inclined to think its the former but at the same time i dont think the show will answer that. There are details in the show and games would make it weird if Vault Tec themselves dropped the bombs (namely that in the show, Barb knew her daughter was at a birthday party and if she dropped the bomb then, she'd be knowingly killing her, and another character at that board meeting is a character from the games who had predicted nuclear war but got the exact timing wrong.) That said, a major theme in the games is that it doesnt matter who dropped the bombs first, what mattered is that they were dropped and nothing could change that. So i think the point of that scene wasnt to say "Vault Tec definitively dropped the bombs" so much as "things were already muddled and tense, and Vault Tec was making it worse"

The 3 main characters represent some of the most common player types throughout these role-playing games: The idealist who just wants to do good in the world, the selfish power fantasy, and the more evil slanted murder hobo. The show runners have clearly played these games. There's no way they could've have gotten the tone and so many details right otherwise. As a longtime player of the franchise, this is the best VG adaptation I've ever seen. I couldn't be more pleasantly surprised.

The opening scene has some exposition about Coop being divorced and blacklisted; Season 2 will likely have more flashback scenes to the 2070s of Coop working with Moldaver and getting discovered & "handled" by Vault Tec. That's when we'll learn how Moldaver made it 200+ years to Shady Sands. Her line about hipocrisy and using your enemies' tools makes me think she's going to make her own version of Bud's Buds but with her resistance fighters in the stasis tubes.

From a gaming perspective i think it did really well and paid attention to the Fallout world. When the raiders attack vault 33 and Lucy realises who they are I shouted RAIDERS at the TV and she went "raiders" like we both at the same time realised who was attacking and it was really cool. Even the raider armour she wears towards the end and then has it on top of her vault outfit. This is very much like the first time you leave the vault and into the wasteland in Fallout. You pick up armour from raiders first and its a nice detail that she puts it on top of the jumpsuit as you would in the game. Lots of other details, the details to the weapons is amazing. The pip boy looking like it does in the game with health stats. I cant wait for the mirelurks and deathclaws to arrive in the show and The Enclave and the Institute - I hope they have synths.

Westworld is a really unfortunate item to bring up when comparing this to other Nolan productions. Person of Interest would have been a far better example to bring up: you really get to see where Johnathan's strengths in this show come from, namely, the juxtaposition of past and present that allows you to recontextualize characters (a mainstay of PoI's entire run), solid characters with great arcs, revealing and/or resolving major plot points at times that feel incredibly logical and payoff well, and knowing how to have characters interact and meet up at times that don't feel entirely like plot convenience alone. That being said, I'm right with you on all your points. I loved the show and thought they nailed the tone and message of the games beautifully. I felt that some of the more...let's say questionable material (largely a matter of personal taste, I know) was largely used for shock factor and incredibly not something I necessarily wanted to see nor had any bearing on...well anything so could have been cut, but it was also never so much that it weighed the show down for me.

Great review Dan. I have played the games and i thought they did a great job translating it to the screen. But I think it the biggest accomplishment is the acting which could have gotten loss with the spectacle of what is going on but both Ella Purnell and Walton Goggins are great in their roles and they really bring this world to life. Btw, franchise canon is that China started the Great War, but the show stays within canon. Vault-Tec was willing to go to extremes, but they didn’t have to. Also, the dog is such a layered representation…for those who know the games, the fact that the dog seems dead and then gets up and is fine after being given a Stimpak (the syringe), the name Dogmeat…all of it is a giant gift wrapped with a bow for Fallout fans. They created a narrative reason for how the dog acts in the games, which literally turned bugs into features. And yet…it still makes sense and is relatable for non-gamer audiences. I felt Lucy was a fully fleshed out female character that changes and developes as she continues in her journey but still keeps the core of what makes her unique still resonating in her actions. Quite a contrast to what they did to poor Katara in the live action version of ATLA.
@pmpowalisz
@pmpowalisz 5 месяцев назад
Katara was an established character with inferior writing in the first season of the cartoon. The live action show did what it could with only eight episodes. Thankfully the following seasons of the cartoon had more experienced writers involved. Since every Fallout game had different characters, the show runners could also make their own characters without messing with the lore too much.

@@pmpowalisz but the thing is that regardless Katara should have been easy character to write then she she was already established that's the problem here. @@isaaclopez-eb6yg live action Katara did not lose her core self in the live action show, while still while still changing and developing as she continued her journey. Can you give me objective examples (based only on the live action show) why you think otherwise? Again , only eight episodes, so much less screen time than the cartoon. Cartoon Katara was poorly written enough, where she needed a bunch filler episodes to have character development. So given the screen time ratio, an established character would be a much harder challenge.
@isaaclopez-eb6yg
@isaaclopez-eb6yg 5 месяцев назад
@@pmpowalisz mainly mention how the lack of skill from the writers is not an excuse to disappointingly give a female character a water down version of a personality from that of the cartoon that was more 3 dimensional. She was mostly able to learn to bend her element without difficulty instead of having trouble like in the cartoon. No matter how many episodes a show may have it is the priority of the writers to make a fully realized character that can stand on her own. I do agree that more episodes in the case of ATLA could have helped the series better.

@@isaaclopez-eb6yg that exactly is an example of poor writing for Cartoon Katara. Even in the cartoon she did not have even remotely enough time to learn how to be good at water bending. So the live action having Katara being a prodigy (aka someone who was naturally good at something to not need much schooling at all), made a lot more sense. A prodigy doesn’t need years of lessons to be good at a particular skill set, only some instruction on how to restraint and to hone it.

Yeah I feel they dropped the ball with Maximus. He was definitely the least interesting out of the three which is weird because the BoS can be a very interesting faction. I think maybe a character that was a veteran knight that starts to realize his morals/priorities are not lining up with the Brotherhood anymore would be a lot more interesting than a character like Maximus.

The show needed a romance option for Lucy, and a character that rose from the bottom to near the top (entirely possible in an organization that values acts of bravery and honor) is very interesting.

The aesthetics, the casting, the tone - all great. But the writing SUCKED. Just one example out of dozens: The writers forgot that Maximus is a child soldier indoctrinated by the Brotherhood since childhood almost immedeatly (except for showing that flashback 5-8 times) and it basically never comes up again. It's Finn from the Star Wars sequels all over again. Through Maximus we should've learned how the Brotherhood sees the world. His relationship to the other characters should be informed by his Brotherhood way of thinking. How to treat old world tech. How to treat 'lesser life' like Ghouls and other 'impure' beings. How the Brotherhood is a strict military hierarchy that will not tolerate betrayal. None of that comes through in his journey. Instead, he only cares about posing as a dead knight (WHY?! It only creates more problems for him), then says dumb sh*t about supposedly not knowing how his male body parts work (?!?!?!?!), meanwhile he never talks about Brotherhood philosophy, but he does end up NOT being executed after admitting to his betrayal in front of his superior. WTF is this awful writing?!?!?!

Caveats first: I have no fondness for post-apocalyptic fiction and have no knowledge of the game. But I just found the series hollow, tedious, and so f*cking boring. By the finale, I was eye-rolling constantly at the ham-handed repetitiveness of it all, complete with. all. those. pregnant. pauses. and. delays. I like much of JoNo's work (gawd, I *love* PERSON OF INTEREST), but I hated this.

Hey Dan, why do you think the critic reception is SO HIGH? I really don’t understand how this show has been given a rotten tomatoes score in the 90’s while having such OBVIOUS quality issues.

I think Fallout and humor shouldn't mix too much... as an avid Fallout player I found the humor cringe and misplaced and distracting from the story. I watched it because I wanted to have seen it... having seen it... I won't watch it again... and probably won't remember it.

1:38 "It's such a mix on the creative side of drama and comedy and different kind of genres" That's the tone of the games - dark humor and satire mixed with some serious takes on what sort of disasters would lead to a retro-futuristic post-apocalypse. They stuck the landing in that respect, likely because so many people behind the show are fans of the source material. As a long-time player of the games, I have an answer to Dan's 21:05 question that derives from what else we know in-universe - but it may be spoilery. If you want to risk it... (see more): 21:05 "There was some setup in the prologue about geopolitics and expecting a war with China, and I'll be interested to see if there was some manipulation on Vault-Tec's part there, or to quote Clue if communism was just a red herring." It wasn't a red herring. In all games there are remnants of a Chinese spy/invasion force within the US, and in Fallout 4 terminal entries indicate that China had pre-emptively stuck at the US first. This possibly being after China had discovered the US' FEV research program which was intended to make the US population immune to the effects of radiation (but turned out to be a disaster that has not been revealed on the show yet - Wilzig sees a bloated green hand on a gurney in his first few scenes). It should be noted, however, that at this time the US had taken control of eastern China after a lengthy war, and those missiles could have come from US installations in the area. There are others who were not part of the Vault-Tec roundtable that were eager to see the bombs drop. Vault-Tec wanted to start the war, but in-universe there were *MANY* unfinished vaults, indicating that *someone else started the war before Vault-Tec* could enact their own designs. Wilzig (who became a detached head) was part of the Enclave, a faction within the US government that felt that dwindling resources weren't enough to sustain the current human population and wished to start over... saving only themselves, of course (note in the television broadcast in the first episode that the US president was conspicuously missing). There were also the Zetans - 1960's pulp scifi aliens with a penchant for abductions - that may have been planning an invasion just before the planet became radioactive. On a much more obscure level there is a Lovecraftian/Stephen King-like entity only known as Ug-Qualtoth which is able to amplify or dampen human sympathy on a global level, and could have pushed any of the above groups along. Any of the above elements could come into play as the seasons roll on.

Fallout fan since Fallout 3. One of the main reasons for Fallout TV success is the showrunners include the creators of Fallout 3 and later games. Todd Howard from Bethesda Games is an active component and I'm sure the developers are actively contributing lores, fact-checks and 3D models of the set pieces. The other thing, of course, is the showrunners respect the fans of Fallout games and wisely choose NOT to redo the games like The Matrix. Just like Cyberpunk Edgerunner, where the creative team respect the property and collab closely with CD Project Red, including all the necessary fan service (not necessarily nudity) that is expected of a game that is upfront about sex, vice and gore and the human condition after an apocalyptic event, though Cyperpunk's world wasn't destroyed. Us fans fully expect the Fallout TV series to incorporate all these elements and I am happy that the studio cast a British female lead who is "okey dokey" about all the shenanigans going on in the TV series. At this point, I think an American actress may be too scared to touch on the themes explored. The cast also looked like they had a really good time filming the series, even minor character like Steph Harper and her new partner Chet looked like they were having a good time on set. We're expecting something happening in Vault 32 but not necessarily in Season 2, assuming that is another short 8 episodes. My wife who's not playing Fallout, found the season too short but it was a fun time. A rewatch is in order.

Hi Dan! I love the show! It's perfect! Another RU-vidr related the show to The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly. I played Fallout 3 for a while, but it got a bit desolate for me, but I'm definitely going back as I have crushes on Charon & Gob. It's also an addicting game. The only thing that would make FO3 better is to be able to have better developed romances with more characters & to be able to give Gob his bar without needing to install a mod.

Not sure what the hype is about IMO. IMO it’s not any better or worse than the next series. I’m not sure either that the emphasis on gore and graphic violence in the action scenes add much. IMO yes it’s a wasteland, a sense of lawlessness, drawing from a video game but the splattering, blowing up fx start to become insufferable. We get it, bullet go boom boom and there’s body parts go pop. It gets tiresome after awhile. Not in a dire-wasteland tiresome, or oh you get desensitised to the violence like a fresh face Lucy, just as a contemporary audience member it’s tiresome. The effects for the Power Armour, Ghoul are generally well done. But there are some that fall flat. The bear comes across a little cartoony. As things stand, the series is a bit one note IMO. IMO it needs to be grounded in something more than just lore and fan service. It’s not gonna last in running off those. What the LOTR films did was that something more

I always appreciate your reviews, Dan. But I gotta say that not contending with the, as the show portrays it, very dramatic moment “revealing” that Vault Tec will drop the bomb because of “capitalism” left me a bit disappointed. I was on board with this show for many the reasons you cited. But, when the show told me (through the music and tone) to treat the revelation that Vault Tec wanted the world to end so some how they would improve their bottom line seriously, I tapped out and I’m surprised you didn’t bring that up in your review. Not trying to be a Karen but the show clearly tried to make that a plot climax and you didn’t even mention it in your review.

So when it comes to videogame fans, I think there are 2 types of fallout fans. Basically, fallout 3 was a soft reboot that changed the location from the west coast to the east coast and completely changed the gameplay. Because it was released near the beginning of the xbox 360/ playstation 3 era of gaming, it was many people's introduction to the series and shaped many of our expectations on what an rpg should/could be. Which leaves us with two kinds of fallout fans, those who played the original games in the 90's and those who started after the soft reboot. For those of us who started with fallout 3, the general consensus is that the show is amazing and a great translation of the games. But there has always been a good chunk of the original fallout fans who never liked the games post reboot and have hated the company(bethesda) unconditionally for 15 years at this point. Most of the negativity isn't "outrage of the week" but appears more to be consistent and unrelenting outrage that has been happening since 2008. For whatever reason, fallout fans seem to be up there with snyder fans and star wars fans in terms of toxicity.

Great show overall. One thing that felt like a retcon, was that in the games shady sands was located in central California (close to what was the city of fresno), whilst in the show it was in downtown LA. In the area around LA is known as the boneyard, includling the town of Adytum). I guess it could be explained that the NCR built a 2nd shady sands in LA that became the new capital before it was destroyed.

I really enjoyed the show, and was surprised by that. I am a fan of the games, but I have issues with the developer's most recent output, especially the writing in their games. And after the disaster that was the Rings of Power, I had little hope that this show could make the games' inconsistent storylines into something interesting. But after hearing some good reviews, I decided to give it a chance and ended up marathoning it. I found the tone to be deliciously ironic, and the characters go way beyond their surface qualities to really dig in. The cast was very good, not just the leads but also the many supporting actors I am thoroughly impressed with what they pulled off here, to the point that I've been actively looking for interviews with the producers. Looking forward to Season 2!

I'm a really big fan of those games and i have to say they did a wonderful job capturing the feel of that world. There are a few little details that they changed (like the location of Shady Sands on the map) but as the rest is great i'm fine with that. Also the mix of comedy, drama and action is what this series of games always was about (apart from Fallout 3, first one made by Bethesda, that did lack a bit in light/funny department) and its great they manage to recreate that specific tone in that series. I also like the casting, even minor characters where well picked and fit their roles. Really the only thing i might nag a bit about is lack of any radscorpions in the show... lets hope we will see more mutated wild life (and mutated man, you know who im talking about ;)) in season two.

Fallout is one of those games where you don't have to have played the other games to enjoy the one you are playing. But if you did, you get additional enjoyment from callbacks. This show has the same feel. You can love the show for what it is. But if you played the games, you get more appreciation for the callbacks.

I am like the most casual of fans for Fallout but I loved this show. It was great but not the most bingeable show due to the fluctuations of episode runtime. It can feel like watching a film at times rather than a tv show. Yet I still managed to watch almost six of the episodes in one day.
