Falmouth, Cornwall - A NOSTALGIC walk around an ANCIENT seaside Town 

This video made me homesick. Love this town and the people.

A classic.

Shop windows looked lovely with the Christmas displays. Have walked past Tragos quite a few times but now I know exactly where to stand to take a picture of how it looked in the past thanks to the Dog Poo Bin which will be famous now as a spot to take that picture! You also brought memories back to me of my Aunt Maudie (I hasten to add, not the one YOU mentioned!) who was like my second 'mum'. Nice reminder. Once more, an interesting and fun walk to watch on a cold December day. x J x

This is one of my favourite towns in Great Britain.

Enjoyed the walk thru Falmouth...I have cousins there. Some years ago I bought a good stout sweater there at the Bosns Locker, still keeps me warm.

Gosh, it’s years since I visited ‘Falmouth’ such elegant architecture and pastel shades as you say Sarah, your walk is packed full of interesting information as always, and Andrews delightful banter keeps a smile on one’s face, the info.about the Cemetery was of particular interest, and who is brave enough ‘quote’ to live in the house on the hill over a former mortuary at Number 13! no less! obviously someone not superstitious at all! It’s a long time since I used an old red telephone box as well, the Constantine Band getting us in the spirit of Christmas 🤶 was wonderful, and the sound of Seagulls always reminds me of long past holidays in Cornwall, very nostalgic, I also would like to know what is inside time capsule’s inside monument! I wonder if there is any sea glass Sarah 🤩 thank you 🙏 for a charming and delightful tour round Falmouth, cheers 🥂

Hello Sarah and Andrew. Well, I have to thank you for the inspiration to 'shadow' another of your Cornish Walks. My wife Tracey and I enjoyed the last one we did in Truro so much that we decided to do this one as well. After re-watching this episode, taking notes and printing a map of that part of Falmouth, we took another lovely train ride over the Tamar and into Kernow yesterday and had a really excellent day out. It looked like an easy route to take, and so it was. Exiting the train and descending the slope to the car park, we immediately found the path to Woodlane. And yes, I did go up to the cob wall and stroke it a-la Andrew.' (Does that make me sad? My wife thought so, haha!). What a pleasant lane Fox Lane is, thought we saw no squirrels and it did get a little steep up to the electricity substation and Woodlane. Then into Wodehouse Terrace and the lovely houses on the left. Did you notice, one had a superb model of an old tin mine in its front garden? We found Mordie's Walk opposite no.24 and went though the entrance. Down the path we went and there it was... the old mortuary and the tomb of Arondel family. I could remember all the quips and gags from your video... so funny. I now have a photo of myself pointing up at the no.13 plaque! I wish I could send it to you. Anyway, onwards to Quay Hill and 'Bessie's Steps', where we admired the bendy handrails and flood gutter. (It wasn't raining for us either, fortunately.) Then down onto into New Street where we made the short walk to the church. In the alley beside the headstones in the wall we looked up at the headstones and, like you, we were also not too sure how we felt about using them as such. At the bottom of the path I took a photo of Tracey from behind walking down next to the old streetlamp near the phone box beyond the black gates. It's actually quite an arty picture if I say so myself! To the 'Lane to Old Chapel Yard'. My wife wasn't too keen on going down what she took as a private path... but I was. I'm not the tallest of people and I was just about able to see over the wall next to that yellow and white tent thing. And yes... I DID try the handle of the brown gate marked 'PRIVATE' and opened it slightly, but I chickened out of going in like you did, Andrew. Just as well because as I started to head back up I heard someone opening the gate and coming out. I didn't look back! Then on, down Arwenack Street to Quay Street for a gander around Seamens Bethel (not 'brothel') before going through the ope and on to King Charles Quay. Peaceful, quite and an amazing view. We found the other ope opposite, leading to Custom House. Andrew, did you notice a pasty and tuck shop called 'The Dog & Smuggler' right next to the Kings Pipe? We bought a couple of pasties there and ate them in the small shelter at the end of the far quay. Now, I know that the pasties here in Devon aren't really up to much, though I have eaten quite a number of good ones in Cornwall, but I have to say these ones had to be the very best pasties that I and my wife have EVER eaten. Straight out of the small oven, we bought one Steak and Gravy shortcrust pastry and one Traditional. WOW! The quantity of meat, the gravy in both, and the perfect pastry covering! We actually ate half each and then swapped. Tracey said she preferred the steak one, but I just loved BOTH! Afterwards, whilst I was standing in front of the King's Pipe and admiring it, I had a conversation with a local lady about it. Thanks to you I was able to chat about it using the knowledge gained from yourselves! Not bad for an Emmet from Devon, haha! I mentioned Cornish Walking Trails to this nice lady and although she does watch RU-vid, she said she'd never heard of you. So I told her all about CWT and that you were one of the top reasons we were there. She then said she'd definitely look you up! And so on towards Bar Road and just past Trago. (Gotta love Trago!) There we recreated your inset comparison old and new photo (but without the 'old'! ...Oh well,) of Bar Road and the Georgian houses, which was fun. Oh, and I took a photo of your infamous dog poo bins, too! I know, I'm weird! Then on to Arwenack Manor where I performed my 'Andrew Act' for my wife by reading from the info board. Tracey wasn't impressed. Haha! Then we crossed the road to take a good look at the pyramid. Thanks to you two, we knew exactly what it was all about and spend a while there admiring the surroundings and remembering your words. I have to say that I was a little surprised, and relatively glad too, that this walk was so short. I now understand why you said that you could do all three walks in one day. But it did mean that, rather than continue up Avenue Road and back to the Dell car park, we had time to go back into the town and wander down Church Street and have a good look at the superb shops before heading back to the station by the route we'd originally come. That is to say, via your walk in reverse. So thank you once again for giving us such a wonderful day in your lovely county. I think we might look back at your town walk of Redruth that you posted some while back and try that one. Take care, stay safe and we both look forward to watching your next adventure. Thank you for a lovely walk through Falmouth. And showing the beautiful window displays. Looking forward to visiting next year, and now I know so many interesting things to look for. The pyramid reminded me of Knill's Monument close to St. Ives. Perhaps this is a monument style from a certain periode of time? 😃 I took a little break form my job routine to watch this. This is my last working day ever. From this afternoon I have saved vacation days until New Year when I will retire. Looking immensely forward to retiring, and I had to celebrate it this morning watching this video from you ❤🥳

Hi Sarah and Andrew, that was a lovely video thank you. Mum and Dad took me to Falmouth as a child. Dad had been in the Merchant Navy and liked Falmouth because of its maritime heritage. The shops looked lovely dressed up for Christmas and It touched my heart hearing the music overlay. You two make me laugh. Andrew going into the private gateway and you Sarah turning on your heel. I used to be exactly the same with my late husband ❤️ PS: The Outakes..... Got it right in the end Andrew and Sarah!! Bethel!! 😲 Thanks again.

Love your videos! The highlight of my week - Cornwall is my happy place. It always intrigues me how similar the Cornish language is to Welsh. I noticed a sign in one of the shops, which said Nadelik Lowen. In Welsh we say Nadoleg Llawen - Merry Christmas!

Very enjoyable ,and informative, a walk through the parts of Falmouth which havent really changed much over recent years, the Cob wall ! Who’d have thought ! A friend once lived on Quay Hill, at number 1, the joke was he lived at Wonkey Hill.

Fantastic video, Sarah and Andrew. Although I generally prefer walks in the countryside, your town walks make such interesting videos, as they are so full of interesting facts. Hope you do the other 2 walks in that book. A couple of town walks I can recommend if you have all Bob Acton's books is his Hayle town walk, which improved my opinion of Hayle enormously, and his low-tide Newquay walk, from the harbour along the beach to Porth, then back along the cliffs & through Newquay. Just love these entertaining walks! ~ you show us the fascinating history behind the scenes, which brings everything to life. Falmouth is packed with history, and I so look forward to following your trails there next year. The graveyard & mortuary was a little spooky. Such speculation might sound a little grim, but I wonder what they did with all those loved ones' remains who thought that that was their final resting place 'forever' (back in the day, when they needed a new road, they didn't have the current sensibilities of reinternment on their agenda) On a more upbeat note, what a wonderful thing the Killigrew Monument is ~ something between a pyramid and an obelisk pointing at the heavens, and built just for the sake of it, and moved twice!
