Famicom Disc System Game Re-Writing: Using FDS Loader to repair non-working Famicom Discs!

The Famicom Disc System is a peripheral for the original Famicom that allowed games to be played from floppy discs instead of cartridges. These discs were cheap to produce and had new features like game saving and extra sound channels. Some of Nintendo's great franchises such as Metroid and the Legend of Zelda were first released on the Famicom Disc System.
On this extra holiday episode of Fix It Friday we will examine an old technique that was once used to re-write discs on the Famicom Disc System: the FDS Loader! This method is outdated but can be used to repair old discs that have read errors.

Hi, I wrote FDSloadr. It's really buggy with the writing stuff, and yeah, luck is required for it to do any disk drive stuff even with a modified drive (took me lots of takes to show it reprogram disks too). This was the very first project I could create and share with others before the NESdev wiki days, and before the end of DOS. I really appreciate you producing this awesome historical video! Your channel has superb content.

@@LIRetroGaming You're welcome, and I think what you guys are doing on your channel is pristine. I watched a couple of your videos where you built an NES motherboard from scratch, and I found those videos brilliant. The Playchoice 10 stuff you showed with those store-unit selectors are some of the coolest NES tech I know to exist! Anyway I did make USB-NES so now that's my baby, and at some point I'll see if it can work with a MISTer FPGA. Meanwhile yeah, I'm still doing lots of NES projects I'm trying to get published to the channel in a quality way, and strive on getting better than what's there already.

FDS uses a particular format of magnetic disks called "Quick Disks", a commercial standard in the 80's. Those disks weren't a native Nintendo standard. Some computers used this kind of disk back then. You can try to find an old stock of blank Quick Disks.
@blarghblargh
@blarghblargh 10 месяцев назад
@@gianmarcofilipponi2673 I think the dimensions are different and you have to add a bit of hardware on the end of them to get the drive to seat them properly. The embossed "NINTENDO" logo on the disks have an opposite-emboss in the drive itself. Personally, I just buy cheap games for $1.50-$3 when ordering other stuff from Japan, and overwrite those. Well, theoretically. Just got them and haven't done it yet. Waiting until I am sure I've fully calibrated my drive that I refurbished before I use it to do any writing, and the tools for me to do that accurately (calibration jig, and touchless tachometer) haven't quite arrived in the mail yet :D

I know this comment is old, but blank "bootleg" famicom disks exist, I have a few! The plastic is typically blue, and it has a funny engraving in it to mimick the piracy protection inside the "nintendo" engraving on the originals.

From what I can tell, the new FDSKey is a great replacement for this device. If you have a working famicom disk system (console + drive + ram adapter), then you don't need any extra cables or devices beyond the FDSKey (and a very modestly sized micro sd card) for reading or writing disks. I just got mine today. It worked for game playback like a champ, with very little fiddliness. Haven't yet tried copying disks or dumping/writing disks, but I read the instructions and it looks dead simple.
@AtariBorn
@AtariBorn 2 года назад
Writing isn't completely disabled by default as you can save to the disks. I watched a very old video on RU-vid of a guy using the FDS drive and a modified ROM adapter to write games to floppy and this guy had a stack of Quick Disks laying next to the drive. I thought they were Fujifilm branded.

it's important to note that every FDS is calibrated differently meaning that the discs you rewrite using your own FDS are likely to only work at their best on that FDS. Making a disc thats busted on pretty much every machine work again in any capacity is great but when it comes to resale its important to let people know of those limitations.
@LIRetroGaming
@LIRetroGaming 3 года назад
That’s very interesting, I actually didn’t know that. I tried it with two systems and did not have any issues. But of course that is a very small sample size
@blarghblargh
@blarghblargh 10 месяцев назад
theoretically you could calibrate an FDS to match some set of known "factory written" disks, by calibrating the drive and figuring out the max extents that the disk can be read, and then picking a value smack dab in the middle of that. might be a lot of trial and error, and probably isn't worth doing as an individual owner who doesn't really plan to resell, but might be worth it if you plan to rewrite many disks for resale. there's some articles by "Stephen" on "Tinker Different" that have a proposed read head calibrated distance, and he sells machined jigs on ebay that ensure calibration to that distance. I believe he might have used a similar technique as that I described above, but I only skimmed his articles so don't quote me on that. that, plus a cheap optical tachometer, he says will produce a well calibrated drive. also, IMO, this disk format is not a very good end destination for preservation anyhow. it's probably better to use this as a way to experience games, rather than as a tool for directly preserving them. because of that, I think overly worrying about whether the disks are readable by a lot of drives doesn't have much point. a better idea is to rewrite them when you need them to work, and keep the actual data in proper digital backups. digital backups are much more predictable, especially if you use industry standard archival backup practices.

Damn man! Pretty awesome! I have a few copier programs myself, but I never really got around to getting an FDS Loader. I am really fond of the older Windows OS & DOS, so this was great to see! The copy tools I have are FDSStick, Disk Hacker version 1.5, and a very rare copier program known as "Child Rearing Gokko." The later two are straight disk copiers that use the RAM Adapter itself as an intermediary, while the FDSStick is a lot like FDSLoader, but can be used on Windows XP+.
@LIRetroGaming

I own an FDSStick as well, but I have not found good information on how to use it to copy discs. If you have any details on how to use it for a disk copying I would love to hear about it!
@RetroSho
@RetroSho 3 года назад
@@LIRetroGaming Of course! You need a copier cable (www.amazon.co.jp/-/en/dp/B0725X7MS1/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=fdsstick&qid=1609716451&sr=8-3) however. Once you have one, you plug one end to the FDSStick, the other end to your FDS, then plug the FDSStick to the USB port, then fire up the program. From there you can dump disk data using the "Read" function -- store it wherever you like. The "Write" function will actually allow you to pop a disk in and copy data from the FDSStick itself onto the disk, then ask if you wanna swap to Side B if it's double sided. It's my favorite copier to date, no muss or fuss. 😀

So fascinating to watch how back in the day people would copy games, very interesting bit of history. When I was younger I got a Super Wild Card for the SNES from a family member as they knew I collected old games & tech but it was already broken (the floppy drive wouldn't read disks) so never did get it to work. I can remember it working & being used from memory of going over to families house though. I always thought that was very cool as a kid & thought that was a first for console gaming at the time. Only to find out years later & in videos like this, that Nintendo themselves probably set the ball rolling on disk copying idea because of the introduction of the FDS :0 Great video

Doesn't the FDS Stick do all of this too? I have a special cable that connects the FDS Stick right to a USB port on my pc, and then the FDS system basically turns into a floppy drive. It only works with Power-1 and 2 versions of the disk system. The others need some modification. My favorite part of of it is I can translate the games Now I can see how useless the townsfolk are in Link no Bouken in English on its original system lol. So I have an FDSStick and a cable with both ends containing the male RAM adapter connectors, and I use that with a 3206 full modded drive to write disks. Problem is, three of the disk cards I have seem to have at least one side which have errors no matter how many times I write them this way. Although the other side on them works fine and I've written some single side games onto them. Disk checker also shows that these sides have errors as well. Would I be able to write to those sides with this method and get rid of the errors? Or could this indicate more extensive damage to the disk surface?

Hello! I'm the owner of the device shown in the video. From what I understand, each FDS is calibrated a little differently, and that leaves an "imprint" so to speak on the disk. If you can manage to calibrate two different disk systems to be as close as possible, then it should work.
