That is sad. A man who is serving his country, 9 months away from his family, shouldn't have to live in a 1 BR apartment like that. But IKEA was so cool about it. They didn't turn them down just because of their situation. Nice job IKEA.
I felt the same way throughout this entire video. It's just wrong. But it's nice to see they were chosen and now have slightly better living quarters. God bless this family.
I'm a self taught interior decorator. This is an impressive use and design of small space. It's not hard to design a room if you have all the space to play with but small spaces for more than one person that is a constant challenge. Other than spot on organization the other great thing you guys have given the family is a room that is a small haven for rest peace and tranquility for everyone when they want it.
The bigger question here is why is that family forced to live in a one bedroom apartment when the father risked his life for our country in Afghanistan? I thought we were paying taxes to support the military. They should be given a stipend to pay for housing big enough for their whole family . Something wrong here.
The fact that a US soldier has to live this cramped makes me really pissed off. Thank you Ikea for knowing this family was deserving of this. Thank you sir for your service. sorry our government doesn't treat you better.
exactly what I was thinking. I remember years ago when my dad got relocated. Only my brother and I moved with him, and there was no housing provided for us. We stayed at some kind of "welcome lodge" for 2 weeks. This lodge was basically a motel on base and 3 of us shared one room. Two weeks was the limit to be there and he'd already reported for duty at his new post. We were moved to another temporary place, that was far away from everything. All this time we couldn't start school. It was another 2weeks before he finally found an apt off base. That was about 25yrs ago and things are still really difficult for military families. Especially if there is only one parent.
The cost of housing in New York is the problem. They probably moved there as a childless couple and stayed too long. They need to find a bigger place and he fights for our country so that he has a choice as to whether or not his family wants to move or stay cramped.
Tina Russell He shouldn't have served his country to attack other countries by creating war and bloodshed. It's fine to defend ur country only when it's threatened, but to create conflict and divide nations is not heroic. Bad choice and now look where you are
I am so happy after watching this. At the same time, I feel sorry for the soldier's family. He and his family deserve a bigger house. Thank you, IKEA for brightening up their day.
IKEA, thank you for helping this family. They really struggled when their dad/husband was in the military and the mother/wife was pregnant. You people have good hearts!
As an Army brat myself, this is a great way for those who don't know anybody in the military to see what additional sacrifices we have to make beyond serving in a war. I love IKEA!!!!
Thank you thank you thank you IKEA for doing a family in MY neck of the woods, Queens, NY! In fact, I know the general area. And this makes me feel like IKEA is REALLY making a difference. And thank you IKEA for covering the cost! So MANY people would love to do this but simply can not afford to live comfortably. Thank you so MUCH!!!
Hi Eveling! Unfortunately, we're currently not accepting applications for the IKEA Home Tour Series room makeovers. You can view any updates on the series as they happen here: www.hometourseries.com/submit Thanks for your interest!
I truly wish you done makeovers here in the UK. I have a very small bedroom, which I am unable to utilise space for. I'm disabled & do everything in this room in terms of sleeping, hanging out, my hobbies - it's nearly impossible to move around freely, not for lack of clutter but for lack of space, drawers are packed full, I'm just a bit stuck. I hope one day you're able to make this a worldwide thing, I know how much it would bless my life & many others over here. Lovely makeover, beautiful family, well done guys x
I love love love Ikea. It's the only store I actually get excited to visit. I can't even wait to get a parking space. Sometimes I tell my partner, let me jump out the car while you look for a spot to park and meet me inside :-)
This is New York for you...families can't afford apartments with multiple bedrooms. It is almost impossible to find them... 2 beds go from 1650 and up ...way up😒
Yeah, New York city seems expensive but do people have to live directly in the city. Seriously, I would think surrounding areas would be a little cheaper. Also, if you have one room, maybe they shouldn't have two kids and the mom could work and save up money for a bigger place.
soxpeewee i used to live in the Bronx and rent there has gotten expensive as well my family was cramp up as well 5 sleeping in a 1 bd apt. Thank God we were able to move we relocated in another state
Such an amazing transformation. Fantastic use of space and storage--go vertical!! Having the pathways cleared is such a key factor in making the space calm and livable. I would love to see a bit more detail on the specific items and a slower 360 view of the room. I would certainly watch a video that was a minute or so longer to be able to see more detail--it's inspiring to watch the process.
Just reading some of the comments I see a lot of negativity with the family being in 1 room. I see no harm in children staying in their parents' room. I stayed in my parent's room when growing up...even when I had my own room I still preferred to sleep in my parents' room. Some of you may not have loving parents who didn't want you close by and in their space...which is why you are so rude and filled with unhappiness!
I agree. it creates more stability and a sense of security. I think children are separated from their parents way too early and it causes separation anxiety which causes problems later in life. the family structure needs to return.
Realfeminist76 that doesn't mean parents don't love their kids enough or anything. I'm a mom of 3. A stay at home at that. I'm a mom ALL DAY LONG so at night when my kids go to bed, that is MY time to have for myself and to spend with my husband. There is nothing wrong with a parent teaching their child that they have their own room and own bed. My marriage is important as well so us having that alone time at night and the bed to ourselves as well as me being able to stay up and watch TV or whatever, is time I deserve and it does not mean my kids don't mean enough to me. And sorry, but a child should be capable of falling asleep and sleeping on their own without having to sleep with their parents every night even as they get older and older. That can create unhealthy habits and problems.
Great video. They do look like a happy family. We shared a bedroom with our son until he was a year old and we were able to move to a bigger place and it was a really fun time.
Now that was super amazing & well worth the ending smiles for this beautiful family.. What a great way to make this space feel more vibrant & roomier.. #ikea is always doing it up on a budget.
that's sad actually , i hope they can get a bigger place in the future , also i am so grateful for everything my parents did/doing for me and my siblings , god bless .
It's great that Ikea helped them with their bedroom. However, I think it might be better if the parents found a way for the living room to double as a master bedroom by using a sofa bed or something. The lack of privacy is going to be a problem when the kids get older, hopefully they find a bigger place by then.
The Japanese use transitional spaces so maybe when the kids are older they could use the living room at night as a bedroom and the parents could get their privacy back. And make more kids.
I love her personality! She needs to be doing RU-vid. Also in response to all the comments about why this family could be living in one bedroom. It's New Jersey....they may be staying in a one bedroom to afford buying a larger home. Military does have pay but only so much and probably not enough to afford New Jersey. Meh
Hi DonutGamez - thanks for your interest! Applying is easy. All you have to do is fill out the required submission form here: HomeTourSeries.com/Submit, and then upload a video telling us about your home and how IKEA can improve your life at home. Best of luck to you!
the previous one looks comfy though lol and if they're not tidy people (like what it was shown previously), it'll eventually become... yeaa, comfy again lol
It's nicely done. .In Mumbai India we have similar space constraints ...A step by step pic of the room or 2nd interview view would b more helpful in understanding what has been used in redesigning
It's same in eastern Europe, I know not that much critical as in Philippines or Hong Kong for example, but still... The fact that it is Europe but people can't afford good housing is quite sad. Most of youth can't afford to move from parents :/
they should really help my mom, my mom and dad are such hard workers !! they raised 8 children , 5girls and 2 boys we always struggled we grew up in a small spaced 2 bedroom apartment. My mom and dad worked so hard even when my mom was pregnant she never gave up! my dad had gotten a stroke back in 2009 and my mom had burly gave birth to my baby sister my dad was at the hospital he couldn't remember a thing! my Mom was the only one working at the time! and she had burly had a child! she worked so hard to feed us ! we never missed any love and never anything even if it was 8 of us in a 2 bedroom apartment. on 2014 my mom was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer! she needed all the help she can so we helped her in her weakest times, but she never missed a smile!! it was a hard time for everyone! a year later she was cancer free and still battling every single day for her family, children, grand children ! my dad also ! thanks to them our lives have been so blessed and I'm grateful for them IKEA ! if anybody needs help its my parents :(
