WWII is a better answer than the French and Indian War, since the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and occupied some of the Aleutian Islands, and at least Hawaii and Alaska were US territories at the time. There were also attacks along the Atlantic coast and in the Gulf of Mexico by German submarines.
