The very first episode of Family Feud from 1976. Moseley Family vs. Abramowitz Family In Loving Memory of Richard Dawson (November 20, 1932) to (June 2, 2012)
@@Wolferal the fiddle/violin part really added don't ya think? Have you listened to the full theme from this era? This is some really GREAT music in the Big Band style
I think Steve surpass Dawson as the best FF host to me. Yeah, Dawson was the first and I know everyone lo es him, but I think Steve was made for FF, a true successor to Dawson but his comedic personality was what made FF back to being one for the most popular game shows in the mid 2010s.
you are absolutely right! i’m a 14yo young folk and i love richard dawson! i still think steve is better, but dawson is still great, too! i completely changed my mind lol. dawson is better.
I love how analog things used to be on this show, the Yellow/Black flip-disc display board (one line at a time to boot) is physically turned to the top-answers cards. very different from today's all digital stuff
@@christinecatt5391 i agree, I shouldn't have said trying to be smooth. I should have said he was smooth... The guy was smooth as butter with women and had great chemistry with people combined with unlimited charisma
July 12, 1976 Hmmm... I was 12 years old, the Summer between the 6th and 7th grade. Listening to a lot of Elton John, KISS, Earth Wind & Fire, and new album Rush 2112. Great Summer!
Not sure how many people know this fact, but Family Feud was the #1 rated television show on prime time television for 4 years straight in its time slot from 1976-79.
It was unstoppable, and once it was cancelled, the 7pm floundered until Wheel Of Fortune took over, and even then the 7:30pm slot struggled with Price Is Right, Bullseye, Joker's Wild, and The Newlywed Game coming and going until 1984 when they rolled the dice with Jeopardy.
The 'oil drilling rights To Jack Lord's hair' gag was also used in the pilot. His other often used gag was 'If you believe that then I'd like to talk to you about some swampland I'm selling'. He used that one at least 4 times on film that I know of.
IKR? The old intros were so fast-paced and catchy. Now, everything's all modernized and the families are already standing on their sides of the stage when the show begins.
Does anybody remember what time the showed aired? Seem to remember watching it in the morning when I was home sick from school. Also, think it was in the summer I became a big fan of the show.
This was actually somewhat stressful for me to watch. Richard hadn't quite gotten into his groove yet and it was a lot slower with having to give the explanations about everything and manage where everyone was supposed to be.
The shows first couple of months were taped at the now demolished ABC Vine Street Theater (later the TAV Celebrity Theater) and later Studio 54, ABC Television Center (now the Prospect Studios) for the rest of it's run.
I hate what GSN does to Dawson's Family Feud now....they speed up and edit the tape so heavily it's ridiculous! I almost wish they would take it off the air...
This is hilarious. We now know why families are told to shout encouragingly “Good answer!” to each other. In this first episode they do NOT and it gets very uncomfortable: “Come on Mom, that’s lousy!” “David you always do this, you never listen to anybody and think you know best. Well we’re gonna lose now, great.”
more likely an indication of how the family "huddle" evolved.. . providing the families a chance to brainstorm their best answers and argue it out privately before stepping back to the hot microphones..
I think the only classic airing now are "Match Game" 70's daytime, "Press Your Luck", "$ale of the Century", "Super Password", both 80's versions of Dick Clark's "Pyramid", and "Password Plus" on weekends - everything else is 2000 or newer it seems! With the vast library that Mark Goodson had, you'd think they could put on a few more shows during the day at least instead of saturating the network with tons of Steve Harvey's version of "Family Feud!"
holydiver73 There's others as well. Not in this particular episode but other one liners he's used more than once. 'I haven't had this much fun since they pulled my wisdom tooth through my ear' 'Excuse me. Your teeth are ok but your gums have to come out' '(reads note/card) Dear Mr. Dawson, the world would be a better place without you and your kind. Prepare to meet thy doom'. RIP Richard. Your wit and charm is sorely missed!
I've been watching & loving this show my entire life but it wasn't until just now that I realized that it premiered in 1976. I was born a year earlier, in 75. Mind blown!
The early episodes of "Family Feud" were different from the later ones. You heard the audience and you never saw them. Gene Wood was very perky back then. When the second contestant played "Fast Money," the camera angle was a little bit different back then.
The questions back then were like: Name a famous (someone) Name a brand of (something) Name something you eat for breakfast Name an expensive car NOTHING like what they ask today!
+dragon volvagia55. I was being sarcastic. I just wish the show had less sexual content than it does today. It might take some effort and creativity but the writers could come up with questions that are fun and "family friendly" at the same time. The contestants' answers are also rather shocking today. In the old days they would use innuendo rather than just coming right out and saying things. The networks don't seem to have "standards and practices" people (censors) anymore. Nothing seems to get bleeped or edited out. I was 21 when the Dawson version of Feud came on the air. I am 61 today. Just call me an old fogey.
+Robert S. Sorry I sounded a bit harsh in my comment. Don't worry, I was just agreeing with you :) I myself grew up watching the show since Louie Anderson hosted around 2000, and even then it wasn't as adult-oriented as it is today. It was only last year when I found out about Richard Dawson and Ray Combs as the hosts, and I began watching the show more on RU-vid than on TV. It amazes me how simple the show used to be when it first came on. I also enjoy the old-style intro for the show - how the families would be posing like they were getting their picture taken and the announcer would say all their names.
Movie matics So much has changed, the set "even though they try to replicate it like this set", 200 point target is now 300 points, "at some point they had the 1 strike rule but thankfully went back to the 300 point rule" and fast money 1st person gets 20 seconds instead of 15 because it did take a while for people to give their answers.
In Dawson's day it started as 200 went to 300 and eventually 400. When Combs got it went to 300 where it stayed to this day. Albeit by Louie Anderson's day they started playing for points in the main game.
You failed to mention Richard Dawson was an actor prior to being on game shows. He starred on "Hogan's Heroes" as Newkirk. That show always bugged me as no Canadians were represented. I now realize that was a compliment. It meant Canadians were too smart to be captured. Lol.
Notice the family that lost was all hostile on their answer, and after the old lady gave the answer on the horse question, the woman on the end was saying "no" like she knew they were fucked, lol
Maybe he probably figured later that everyone knew how to play the game (#1 answers, strikes, play or pass, Fast Money, the works), that no real explanation was needed outside of the cursory "Top (X number of answers) on the board-- here's the question...".
Family Feud hosts milestone: Richard Dawson, Ray Combs, Louie Anderson, Richard Karn, John O'Hurley, Steve Harvey and Carrie Keagan. Celebrity Family Feud hosts milestone: Al Roker, Steve Harvey and Carrie Underwood.
Rudolph Valentino (1895-1926) became one of the great romantic idols of Hollywood's silent movie era. He helped to define what a star should be, and represented the screen's first "Latin lover." His early death, at the age of 31, only increased his legendary status, especially among his large female following.
For each of the following 2 Questions, I would have guessed 1 of the following 3. Symptom Of The Common Cold 1: Runny Nose 2: Sneeze 3: Fever Rock Group 1: Led Zeppelin 2: The Rolling Stones 3: The Eagles
Dawson was a natural host. He did a better job on his first episode than Gene Rayburn did on Match Game 73, though Gene improved greatly in short time, and was untouchable after that.
@Shalanna Williams 4K Teacher Steve Harvey was the best. The first two seasons of Steve Harvey's Family Feud were full of disgusting answers but l wish Steve Harvey makes the show family friendly again.
From Richard Dawson to Steve Harvey. Congratulations on 48 years of FAMILY FEUD. People keep saying show business has changed over the years. Well, of course, this was the 1970's. We are now in the 2020's. Duh! People who hate Steve Harvey as the host of FAMILY FEUD, grow up, he can't please everyone, you hate him because of the way other people like him. The show's ratings have skyrocketed because of him. Both he & the show have Emmy Awards. Yes, the questions are more raunchy nowadays. But, there's a simple solution, don't watch it then. Richard Dawson was creepy with all the kissing of the female contestants because he wanted to give them good luck. Then why not kiss the male contestants? Don't they need good luck too? Also, Richard Dawson, in several episodes, would come out with a speech & would not start game play for about 5 to 7 minutes. By that point, Steve Harvey is already two questions in. John O'Hurley, I personally think, was the blandest host. Steve Harvey also hosts FAMILY FEUD In South Africa, by the way. Congratulations on 15 years of hosting FAMILY FEUD Steve Harvey, here's to 15 more.
Caelidh Goode - If you can only think of one or two answers (depending on the size of the board) or if you know your family isn't well versed in the current topic, it probably wouldn't be the worst idea to pass.
Everybody wanted to kiss Richard Dawson. It started on Match Game. His answers were SO good that contestants learned to go with him exclusively for the Super-Match. Any contestant who did NOT go with Richard was running an unnecessary risk and didn't know what they were doing. Richard Dawson got the reputation for being the kissing MC but Gene Rayburn started it on Match Game.
