That part always cracks me up no matter how many times I see it, especially given that J.J. looks concerned for his mother before yelling his catchphrase. I think this might be my favorite Family Guy cutaway gag!
I don't know about any animators, like someone else in the comments (and The Show itself) were Korean sweatshop workers 🤷🏼♂️ I rather doubt they had even seen the show or even knew what it was about but Macfarland himself said he idolized Norman Lear's work. 🤓😎✌🏻

do you think she improvised that? What an actress, she really poured her all into a silly few-second parody of a show that she once got upset for its serious-issue plots being eclipsed by ratings-grabbing silliness.
I don't even know what Good Times is, but the concept of a person breaking down because of a spontaneous realization that their name is stupid still makes me laugh at random moments.
@GordoScarface Exactly, and both she and John Amos (who played her on-air husband) complained that JJ's antics took the overall seriousness out of a show that was intended largely to illustrate the struggles of poor black Americans. But I disagree; on the contrary, Good Times was still quite poignant, and JJ's character served to draw an even larger audience than would've otherwise tuned in, thereby maximizing the show's effect and legacy. Of course, that could just be me.
I think Esther Rolle would have been amused at the gag, and both she and John Amos would have laughed at the idea of called J.J. an idiot. He certainly was, and both actors agreed that too much time was spent on hitting the "Dynomite" button over and over.
I think the biggest mistake they made was trying to tie it to an existing show. The writing and visual design are... well, they had potential, but any prospective viewers were either going to be really pissed off at the knockoff, or not have any idea about the show it was based on. (See also: "Velma")

The first time I seen this episode I was high af, and the way she kept saying "my name is Florida" had me dying 😂. I laughed for like an hr off that one part no lie lol

The only problem was... This Good Times actually looks better than the 2024 version, and I've never seen the original sitcom! I can tell it's a piece of Shetland even if I haven't seen anything related to it franchise-wise.
I'm black and remember this scene very well. I don't know what the fuss is all about with the new show when it's totally acceptable to act degenerate. You call it out or tell folks that's not that way to act they'll label you "Anti-Black" 🤦🏽♂️
I never thought there would be another Family Guy joke that would be a more loving tribute to what they're mocking as opposed to an upcoming animated reboot.... that Family Guy's creator coincidentally is involved with.
This SPECIFIC cutscene never leaves my head for some reason. I only saw it once before this and back then I was maybe 6 or 7. Classic family guy harmless humor.
🤣🤣🤣 I guarantee you she probably said that in the last movie she played in on sets where instead of just saying out the line she read in her script the last word she said was “My name is Florida!!! Florida!!! That’s a states name!!! Why is my name Florida?!?!?! And suddenly Don Cheadle Michael Rooker and Bruce McGill are looking at her like are OK?😕 In case you’re probably wondering that was Rosewood from 1997 the story about the Rosewood massacre that happened 99 years ago.
Growing up on watching both Sanford and Son and Good Times, both, this one FG has me rolling about ten times harder with just how true it is in full, especially about JJ being an idiot, that I know both Florida and James were trying to put it in the most subtle of terms when responding to his mannerisms.
Esther Rolle, who played Florida got to the point where she could not stand the cliche they turned J.J. Walker into. Walker had no problem with it, as long as he was employed. However, she and John Amos thought the writers (none of whom were black or had the slightest experience with black culture) were doing serious damage by turning Walker's character "into an idiot who can't speak, can't read, can't think, doesn't have a job, and just stands on the corner saying "Dynomite!" every five minutes". John Amos was eventually fired in a very shabby way by Normal Lear, who got tired of Amos's complaints about the horrible writing, and instead of, you know, hiring competent black writers who could have written relevant shows for black audiences, called Amos at home and said "good news! The show is being picked up again next season! The bad news is you won't be part of it!". He thought he could bully Amos into pleading and begging not to be fired from the show, and instead shut up and stop complaining, like a good boy should. Instead, Amos said nothing. When Normal Lear finally said "well, do you have a response?" Amos told him "what do you expect me to say, Norman? It's your show, you can do what you want. Good luck with the show next season". And he hung up. He said wasn't about to kiss the ass of a white producer and beg for his job. The show went downhill quickly after Amos's departure, and was canceled. Norman Lear finally admitted he Might have been wrong to do that, but it took him 30 years after the show was canceled. What a brilliant insight. Lear was an enormous hypocrite; he had spent his entire life complaining about how Jewish characters were played as racist cliches, written by non-Jewish writers who didn't have a clue about Jewish culture, and here he did the exact same thing to black actors in a show allegedly about a black family. I wish I had written to him at the time and pointed that out to him, and asked him how he could not put two and two together. I could not watch the show after the 30th time Walker yelled "Dynomite!!", which he did in just two episodes.
The joke is a hyperbolized expression of how Jimmy Walker’s character from Good Times always broke the dramatic immersion from the show by being a jackass. It’s one of the reasons John Amos (the dad) left the show.
