In the 1990’s we had a Pennine Fiesta folding camper. We used to zip the awning on to the main unit then pull it by the front corners back over the roof. Then erect the frame with its front legs half height and pull the roof canvas over the frame. Then lift the front legs to normal height, extend the roof rafter bars out and peg out. We had a Conway Colt trailer tent before that which had the awning bit permanently sewn on and that had the same method of erection.

This reminded me why when it comes to camping, I'll choose the motel every time.

Little tip as hoid as duct tape is always have some electrical insulation tape you could stretch wrap it roubd the hook and jam it into the hole

Rub a candle on the zips before you close them, makes it so much easier to close and reopen them.

It's always fun watching someone else erect an awning at a caravan/camp site! After many years of awning erections I learnt over time to NOT tension anything until it was almost fully complete. Makes a huge difference whereby the last 10% only takes 10% of the time - not 90%. Good luck and have fun!

Very amusing, as I don't have to do it!🤣 The problem I see though, is it isn't a one off job, you will have to go through this every time you take Bob camping!😮You should let Little Miss Hubnut do more of the filming by the way, she is very sweet and entertaining!

Fabric first then poles up from inside. Much much easier and no need for tape then. So glad our caravan has a roll out canopy with slip in sides. You can get inner tents for awnings. Make great bedrooms or bathrooms.

Fab filming by Miss Hublet, highly entertaining banter and information from her. The only off putting part about an awning is that you know you have to go through that on most trips out with Bob, don't worry though, you'll soon have it down to a fine art.

This very video, and the hours fannying on in Sandsend in Whitby with our Trailer Tent, is the reason we went away in it for just one holiday, and subsequently bought a caravan.

Tip for zips…rub the zip with a candle. The wax lubricates and helps when pulling them closed.

Epic levels of persistence and good natured family support (on camera at least) to achieve an honorable goal. LMH with her nifty camerawork and bright commentary added a needed distraction from the ungodly zips of doom challenge that Ian was battling with. The mismatched “Conway Accessories” didn’t help but the end result was a triumph!

We went camping at church stretton maybe a month ago what a night it was minus 2 with freezing fog woke up to freezing fog, lovely sunny days . Nearly caught 2 carp. Lots of tiredness do to lack of sleep , the mk3 golf estate had a good work out filled to the gunners.

Here in the 'states, an entire industry has sprung up, around making RV awnings. Here they tend to be roll-up affairs, which are more or less permanently attached to their host recreational vehicles. Extending them usually consists of unrolling them, unfolding the tethers, and attaching the tethers to the sockets on the bottom of the RV body or frame. The nicer RV's now come with ones that electrically wind and unwind.

It helps if you're a well practiced one armed paper hanger when tackling an awning

Evenings and mornings we love awnings !

That's large enough to park Bella under, one needs to be good at parallel parking though. A tarp as a groundsheet and a bit of shag pile on top, a living room from home, a fire pit, some bangers and a bottle or two of vino (alcohol free for MHN), sorted.

Ahhh, just like putting up our 80's Pennine Pulman, eventual you will get to just 20 mins of relationship stress. NIce to see you pull together to solve the problem, and that Apex zip point is a PITA , you can open the side window and stand on the cabinets mind....

So brilliantly HubNut! lol

That awning roof may sag when it rains,could do with guide ropes may help,also there should be a inner canopy that clips on to the roof struts which finishes it of nicely. The more you use it the easier it becomes,great video 👍

Had exactly this type of camper a year or two back. I remember the awning being an absolute pain in the arse to a point where i refused to put it up unless necessary. Always good to check that the roof of the camper is fully waterproofed, the wife was sure she'd been thorough doing it with her friend as i stood there at three in the morning wiping the leaking ceiling during a downpour. A memory foam topper for the beds makes them extremely comfy too.

Get some awning zip spray on those zips they sound very dry. You will get the hang of popping that up. Our caravan awning about 20 minutes, enjoy.

haha, it reminds me so much of our caravaning days, the kids decided to help us (8 and 10 year olds), by the end of the day we had an awning up and also no one was talking to each other. Burger and chips in the camp site cafe and all was well with the world once again, good on you Ian for having the patience of a saint.

I don't miss this! My camper trailer had one similar, I only ever really used the roof part, and that was enough of a palaver to set up. Gone to a small caravan now with a roll out awning, bliss!

Absolute pain in the backside to get these things up but once it's all there it's such a lovely way of camping! Spent two weeks in Croatia in a folding caravan.

Thank you for reminding me why I hate camping. Very amusing to watch though. Ian showed magnificent restraint, however, I suspect there would have been temper tantrums if the camera wasn't rolling!!

Great filming by little miss Hubnut, or should that be eldest hublet as she's taller than miss Hubnut! ;-0 I loved the "gaffer tape fixes everything" followed seconds later by "gaffer tape won't fix that hook" ... Comedy gold! Releasable cable ties are your friend when camping - they provide easily adjustable fixings (though will break sooner than normal cable ties of the same size) Others have suggested attaching the awning first (before attempting the 60s erection of Bob) as the 'fighting zips' part can be carried out at ground level and without the fabric under tension. With a caravan awning the standard method is to pull the awning through the channel in the side of the caravan (I know this isn't possible with a folding camper, but bear with me!) then fight your way under the awning and hook on the poles, then build out the frame to the outside edge (under the awning, lifting it away as you progress) - I have done this with an 8 year old daughter as my wife had to rush back to work (honest, not an excuse to avoid awning duties!), so can confirm it is easier than trying to get the awning over the poles! Great to see you get there and be positive at the end of it Can you erect Bob and awning in the unit (with a car parked under the awning) so it can dry? That would make quite a fun video too! You may need ropes to stop Bob unfolding fully onto some of the cars so you can fit your fleet in and close the unit doors ...

The awning is a game changer. A groundsheet is a must especially with our wet and muddy weather. I bought myself a roll of damp proof membarane from Screwfix for my caravan awning and it has kept the water out.

Definitely worth getting an awning carpet. We had a caravan awning without for a while but on grass pitches having the carpet reduced much into the van so much would go without it now
