in this video:
After purchasing 18 acres of raw land, we needed to put in a culvert to access it from the road. We looked into renting equipment, but in the spirit of being debt free, we decided to do as much of it as we could by ourselves. We purchased a pipe, transported it to the property, and dug the trench. When it came to fill dirt, we tossed around the idea of wheelbarrowing loads of dirt from the back of the property. But when we did the math, that meant we'd be wheelbarrowing 50 loads of dirt, 20 miles of walking, at a calculated rate of 50 hours of work minimum. So, we opted to get fill dirt delivered, and spent a day shoveling, raking, and tamping. Building this culvert took about 3 weeks total from the planning and permitting to the tamping and leveling, but it was well worth it! The next project will be to clear and level about 300 feet of trees to connect the culvert to the back of the property.

Thanks, haha. We watch other channels sometimes and wonder how do they have time to do these things with kids. What are their kids doing?? Also, we are taking this journey together as a family and it is important for us to provide opportunities for our kids to be involved as much as possible.

New Subscriber here....we are about to replace and install culverts ourself and doing it in SUPER rocky soil here in NW Arkansas. I am gonna watch the video now and hopefully learn some good tips and tricks for doing it via hand tools as we too do not have any heavy equipment.

Awesome, good luck with your project! Fortunately we did not have rocks, but we did have a lot of stumps...the mattock was my favorite tool during the clearing. If you have lots of medium sized rocks I'd recommend saving them and using them to line the sides of the culvert

Hello neighbor, sort of, we are in central AR and about to install 15" culvert. We do have rocks to deal with. This video helps to make sure we do it properly. Thanks.

@@mandiegarrett1706 if y'all are doing it by hand I highly recommend getting a landscaping bar with a point and blade as it helps with getting around the rocks

Super hard work and it turned out very nice. I would suggest installing some type of rip rap at the downhill side of the tube so it does not create a hole as water pours out over time...of course this video was a long time ago so you probably already did that or something else. Guess I should go and see what all you have done since this install.

Haha, yes we still need to add something to shore up the sides. Eventually I will make it look nice with sawn pine stumps or something

Woah! That was a lot of hard work. Impressive you got it finished. What was that other driveway your SUV was parked on? Thanks for sharing

Our neighbors driveway that we were "borrowing". It is raw land and no one lives there, but we were anxious about getting our own installed. We have a flagpole property so our driveway is about 1500 ft long just to get to the start of our property from the road and 35ft wide so we don't have much wiggle room on where to clear trees.
