Watch as another unexpected surrender gets checked in by Saskia. The guinea pigs in this particular group were being purposely bred. There were 8 total in this group and this is just another day at the rescue. I am asking all viewers to be kind and remain civil in your comments.
A lot of people honestly do not know there is a different way and to me that makes it all the more special when they surrender as opposed to other options they may choose. And instead of giving in to feelings of resentment and anger at this unjust situation I try to turn the experience into a positive one for all those involved.

Yelling and ranting is never productive. Never. Saskia's patience and respect probably went a long, long way to helping the owner realize they did many things wrong that left the pigs in ill health. They'll leave feeling some regret, and quite possibly be a better respecter of animals in the future. If Saskia had ranted and raved at the owner, they would have become defensive (as we all do when someone yells at us), and would have left the rescue angry, with no lesson learned. I'm grateful the owner cared enough to bring them into the rescue. Some just abandon them outdoors or in garbage cans. We can take our anger and focus that energy on something productive like helping these pigs; consider making an Amazon purchase of guinea pig supplies to donate to the rescue; or perhaps a monetary one. Saskia - you just made the world a little bit better today. Thank you.

karijaneify Saskia did handle the situation well but for me as a piggy owner It pisses me off to see neglected piggy’s. It breaks my soul to see this!! How can someone let this happen? My piggy’s are cared for before my needs always. Ours are so spoiled! Yes you are right she could of dumped them and left. She did the right thing by bringing them to Saskia.

@@brightsmiles3792 I'm glad you feel that way! Most of us do! That feeling isn't the problem. It's how we react to it. Yelling, judging and cursing would have only made us feel better. It wouldn't have changed the history of those pigs; the damage had been done. This is psychology. When people yell, it triggers a stress response on the brain (of the recipient), and stress hormones are dumped into the bloodstream while the body prepares for flight/fight. The rational part of the brain actually shuts down. Learning is impossible. The difference Saskia made is this: she kept her cool. She made calm, factual comments on the health observations of the pigs and explained why they existed (poor diet= poor poops). Some of it (maybe more), was heard by the owner. Learning happened. There's no way to know how much; but Saskia's calm response was the ONLY thing that would have made a difference to the future animals this person might have.

It sounds like the lady wasn't certain and used that as the reason however guinea pigs are masters of hiding when they are sick or injured. If she wasn't paying close attention it would be easy to miss at first. Not justifying or defending the neglect of these animals in anyway. Simply pointing out how the piggy could have fooled humans for awhile.

Educating children about living beings showing care and respect is so important. That’s why I have taught my daughter from a very early age how to be gentle with animals; how to express love to animals; how to always be patient; and sometimes certain animals should be given time to adjust to living with us (like our cats) and time coming to us (rescue dogs) instead of running after and catching them. She is now an adult with children who are caring and gentle also. Thank you for teaching us about these precious little creatures!

In rescue you cannot pass judgement on people. That does not help the animals. People need to be approached with kindness and education, and Saskia did that. People will not seek help if they feel judged. The important thing is getting the piggies in a safe space. This was not only educational to the owner, but to the people watching. Good video. 🎃👻

It could have been an accident. The guinea pig might have tried to jump from his arms and maybe he just held on too tight. My 9 year old is very ticklish and I could totally see him dropping a guinea pig. That’s why I make him sit on the floor with them on his lap if he wants to hold them.

Young children need lots of supervision when handling any pets but especially with smaller animals so easy to hurt them if the child isn't trained or supervised. Now this head tilt may not of been caused by an accident with child. Its in good hands now with Saska.

Hearing her jump back and forth between explanations is so infuriating. “Oh he was born with it” “oh my son dropped him” “oh my son squeezed him” “oh he’s blind” “well it happened after my son held him” “well it didn’t happen immediately after” “it could’ve been that”. I’m so glad the woman had talked to those owners in a respectful way. I can’t imagine I would have the same patience and reservations or control on my emotions.

Saskia, you really handled that well. I wonder if it occurs to anyone else that if anyone else is watching that has guineas they have to surrender, that they won't be raked over the coals for doing so. This was a perfectly executed teachable moment, and she spared their dignity. Thank you. I have acquired many guinea pigs this way, i now have 9 guineas (4 babygirl girl pairs, one handsome boy), and do NOT plan on breeding. 3 pairs were surrendered to me, and of course i welcomed them in! 💙

Saskia, so kind to piggies and people alike. We have lots of people around here like the family that surrendered their pigs. They are not mean, they just don't know any better. They think it is fun to have babies, then things quickly get out of control. We are just glad when they bring the piggies to a shelter. The ones around here end up on Craig's list. if I can help a piggy in need, I will. Roxie and Teddy were both free.....if I see that in the ad, I panic because they might end up as snake food. Argh!

I'm angry with the lady as well but at least in the end she did the right thing and surrender those poor piggies to someone who could take better care of them that she could. People have a ton of pride and I'm glad in the end she started to see the right thing due to Saskia's patient and respectful tone. Helping her see there are plenty of piggies out there look for great homes and that we don't need people breeding more and more of them. In the moment you want to yell and be angry but know in the end it takes a lot to change someone else's mind and getting someone to admit they are wrong is hard. Anger at someone else is not helpful in any sense. It only pushes the person away and perhaps they will continue the bad habit out of spite. If they learn it is wrong they won't continue the behavior plan and simple. There are plenty of people out there who just don't know either and we should focus our energy on raising awareness about the topic and not just getting mad at the misinformed. Instead we should inform them so they can't make the mistake in the first place or make a mistake on piggy care or understanding the basic health signs and symptoms of a more serious medical issue in there guinea pigs.

Thank goodness those sweet piggies found their way to you, Saskia! And I was so impressed with the way you handled that situation! I know it is because you have had WAY too much practice! It is a lesson to us all that if we are gentle in our approach, our point is far more likely to get across. Yelling, berating, shaming and talking down to the other person is just going to make them defensive. In my experience, the first thing to shut down when one gets defensive are the ears! I was furious while watching this video & couldn't believe that you weren't being more forceful, but once I calmed down and thought about it, I realized that your approach to the situation was brilliant! Keep up the amazing work!

Yes I learned that aggression, anger and passive aggression creates a toxic environment and nothing good, kind or loving will come from that. I am a firm believer of raising the vibrations in ones community through actions and words. I know we did when people like this family to walk away with a smile on their face, knowing they did the right thing ultimately and they are now not likely to get into a situation like this again. The family had never seen farm animals before so they went on a tour of the ranch and met the other animals. And I know that on that day a seed was planted, and vibrations were raised.

They are so sweet but what a shame. I wish people just wouldn’t breed. And it’s so hard to be professional and respectful during surrenders. I know from experience. You struggle to keep yourself together because you know a surrender is the best thing for the animal but damn it’s hard. This was difficult to watch. We don’t have anything like LAGPR out here and pigs are dumped constantly in hamster cages or tiny fish tanks. I suspect being a rural Midwest state many more are dumped outside for a terrible slow death. I wish I could say that education and discount clinics were enough to slow down irresponsible breeding or pet ownership but it’s not. You feel like a cop. Working nonstop without an end in sight.

i volunteer at a rescue and there was a guinea pig that was rescued by a group of firefighters due to neglect, he was called Phoenix and was very friendly and use to love being petted and would run over to you to be stroked he was very skinny due to malnutrition , he wasn't gaining very much weight despite having plenty of food that we had given him and i noticed he was going a bit downhill and he had to go to the vet and unfortunately his jaw was fused and he couldn't eat and had to be put to sleep. it does make me sad knowing he died due to all the malnutrition and being starved and just not being looked after. I am thankful that these owners did surrender so the animals get a better quality of life where they will be treated responsibly. Thankyou for what your doing,

Uggghhhh.... this is why I like animals better than people. I honestly don't know how you stay so nice to them. I hope they all find good homes. That little black and white guy was cute. Very different markings.

I'm glad the guinea pigs are with you. Ignorance can be cured with education. But this cold-hearted lack of caring about an animal's welfare can't be fixed. I hope that newborn she talks about doesn't get raised to be the same kind of person.

Urgh. I can't even :( They don't even sound like they think they did anything wrong, absolutely no remorse... just pure ignorance :( "I can't look after them because I have a newborn" Well you weren't looking after them regardless! I have to deal with people like this all the time and it takes all of me to just teach them with enthusiasm and try not to scare them and hope they listen. Try your best not to blame them for anything to their face but silent scream at them and wish you had the power to ban people like this from having animals! All my love to you all and highest respect to Saskia

I'm so glad that the piggies are at the rescue. I was so saddened by the condition that the piggies were in. Saskia is a wonderful diplomat. Henry Kissinger should take lessons from you. I'm not that diplomatic since I live in Tucson where most people leave their animals outside in heat and cold.

Saskia I ended up rescuing one guinea pig on July 5th and it’s a boy and then on July 15th I ended up rescuing another guinea pig that us a girl to find out she is pregnant I never dealt with a pregnant guinea pig before and that is when I found on you on RU-vid and started to watch your videos and I cleaned their ears clipped their nails gave them bath and bought them both a bigger cage due to the cages they came to me in were small right now they both are in the same cage until I can buy the second cage. You have inspired me.

They're no doubt awful caretakers of these guinea pigs, but at-least they had the decency to surrender them instead of trying to sell them or just letting them die.

Saskia you are so patient with the public. I would have a hard time not slapping someone who was surrendering their piggies but who also bred them. Its great they they brought them to you and didn't just dump them but Grrrrrr, that's just stupidity and callousness on their part. They weren't even properly caring for the ones they had and yet for some reason they thought it would be a great idea to make more!!

I'm pregnant and it's hard for me to bend down and get up without feeling very dizzy but I will never get rid of my girls and still give them the best care I can and thinking of getting a 3rd one soon. My husband is making a 8ft enclosure for them soon as well.

It is important to remember that we don’t see the whole situation of the people surrendering the guinea pigs. We don’t know what they were told when they got the guinea pigs. They could have thought that what they were told was enough. Almost everyone who neglects or harms an animal does not do it on purpose because they think they were doing the right thing, caring for them the way they were told. Remember to put yourself in the other person’s shoes and walk yourself to where they are now. Think about how uncomfortable they might be, the little crack in their pride. Be kind. Love. Empathize ❤️❤️
