A collection of videos by director Saskia Chiesa, who started the organization in 1999 shortly after arriving here from her native Holland. Some are funny, some terribly sad and most all are extremely informative. As the largest guinea pig welfare organization in the USA, LA Guinea Pig Rescue serves Los Angeles City, County and surrounding cities. Over 2500 guinea pigs were rescued and re-homed in 2023 alone. LAGPR offers rescue, sanctuary and adoption services as well as free wellness checks, nail clips, advice and ongoing support to all guinea pigs and their owners. Guinea pigs are rescued from city shelters and private parties. +My Etsy Store! theuniversereflected.etsy.com + Donate - www.laguineapigrescue.com/donate.html + List of items we use www.amazon.com/shop/losangelesguineapigrescue + MY Facebook Group! we were at our local pets at home store here in the uk and they had a baby guinea pig on her own in an adoption enclosure what caught our eye she was literally sideways on the ground her head had such a head tilt, i brought it up with the store and they said yes we know she was one of theirs that was brought in and if she wasn't adopted they would put her to sleep, and she apparently had been treated with them for an ear infection me and my mum were actually disgusted by this so we adopted her got her home and cosy and took her to our vets she was tiny i mean tiny she had a runny nose, i tried to look in her ears they were clogged with ear wax, she was wobbly and her head tilt was awful our vet treated her multiple times with antibiotics, inflammation medication, they said it could've been trauma to the head related, or just being born neurological she was tiny she was not growing, over here bulla syndrome is not widely heard but she didn't make it to having an x-ray or anything the vet decided to just be palliative and keep her comfortable quality of life wee tilly lived until she was 3 months old but she was just so tiny and not well at all
When I worked at petsmart we gave all the animals fresh veggies/fruit every morning, (the ones that could) it would get removed after a few hours so it wouldn't spoil. We also had a room in the back where the sick animals would stay. They would go to the vet and each had a treatment chart/any specific meds/treatments. We would also adopt out recovered animals for free to good homes.
I won't be able to participate this year in the fall raffle. But looks like LOTS of great items! I will try to see if I can squeeze it in. When is the deadline?
Sadly this isn't new. Pet shops have and sell sick animals, and they rarely provide the proper care and nutrition. Almost three years ago I purchased a male guinea pig from Petco, he has been at the store for over 10 months, he's an albino Peruvian, that's why nobody wanted him for so long. His hair was matted, his nails were very long, he has fungal infection on his feet and skin, the worst was that took over 6 months for him to walk out of his hidey when I was around, over a year to look happier, he doesn't really squeaks at all, and the few times I heard him were you years after bringing him home. He's now a neutered boy with two ladies and finally enjoying his life, he popcorns when he gets a clean enclosure and loves new hay everyday. This is a very important topic and a very helpful video Saskia. Thanks you for always protect them in so many ways.

Commercial pet sales over a certain number of animals per year needs to be banned. They obviously have zero incentive to care about these animals when they really cost about $5 yet the company gets $50+. Limiting the number the store can receive each year would incentivize them to actually care, no replacements if they die.
Hi, i am from Puerto Rico and i just went to a pet co and I saw the most sick piggie i ever seen in a store. I would like to sent you guys the picture I took. Is so sad he have hair lost and just looked sick. Where can i sent the picture? If i can.
Gosh, I'm glad you didn't get arrested! In the UK we have Pets at Home, which is pretty much exactly the same as Petco. I'm going to try and be a voice for our piggies here if at all possible. I'm going to reach out to anyone who has stories about buying piggies from PAH who have had issues with mis-sexed and pregnant piggies or buying sick piggies. I want to gather as much as I can to put together a campaign to present to the government to try and stop the sales of piggies in this store. I have no idea if anything can be done to change things, but I want to try.
Everyone loves Triffic! Thanks for making this video Saskia. It's so important to call out pet stores that allow sick animals to be put on sale. Adopt - don't shop
Thank you for making this video Saskia!!! I got 2 skinny piggies from a “breeder” on Craig’s list … when I arrived they were cut up from head to toe .. I didn’t think one of them was going to make it…it’s not just the pet shops but this is so sad! Thank you for sharing this experience.. on the bright side you have a MAGICAL Skinny Piggy that just became the Fresh Prince of Bel Air!!! Love&Light from Temecula 🤍🤍
If any UK pet shops sold sick animals they would get closed down immediately as it violates the Animal Welfare Act 2006 and even the breeder they came from can also get in legal trouble too. My boys came from the cavy shows where I met both the breeder and parent guinea pigs. My Oscar before he passed used to be a stud guinea pig and my PCap was going to be a stud guinea pig too. My Giyu and Sabito were both rescue boys from the pet store I got them from. There needs to be more inspections going on at pet stores in general to prevent these types of things from happening and if they fail they get blacklisted from applying for licenses to sell animals.
I don’t have an experience with guinea pigs and pet stores (luckily I learned before having piggies in the family; BUT I had a chinchilla from the adoption section (she likely still originated from the pet store). She had terrible genetics, which took her too soon. She had a hunch and severe genetic malocclusion (the main things), that got too bad and she didn’t properly recover from her surgery (I had to have her PTS and it was the worst day). I had her for 5ish years, but Chinchillas should live around 20 years 😢 I should also add that I have heard plenty of heartbreaking stories from local guinea pig groups. It’s still an issue here in the UK too. Piggies are also purchased with ringworm, respiratory issues and unwanted pregnancies (usually sexed wrong before purchase).
